Kat Von D Ink Liner

Kat Von D Ink Liner ($19.00 for 0.019 fl. oz.) is supposed to be a waterproof liquid eyeliner that wears for up to 24 hours (I only tested for sixteen) with “bold lines with instant color lay-down.” None of the three I bought to try were that opaque, and they’re really very runny when applied to the skin, so they sometimes spread out into the “lines” on the skin (it will depend on your skin type and how your skin is in the area). The biggest issue I had with these is that you can’t intensify the eyeliner, and it’s hard to correct any mistakes, because if you go over the same area with the felt-tip, it erases the color and becomes even more difficult to get even, smooth coverage in that area.

Kat Von D Dali Ink Liner ($19.00 for 0.019 fl. oz.) is described as a “teal.” It’s a subdued, medium-dark blue-teal with a semi-matte finish. It had semi-opaque coverage that wasn’t buildable to greater coverage. It is better applied over your eyeshadow (like winged eyeliner, after you’ve finished your eyeshadow look) than over bare skin, as it really had a tendency to bleed. Once dried, it lasted for sixteen hours with little flaking, and it did seem waterproof. MAC Siahi (P, $16.00) is more shimmery, darker. MAC Blue Peep (P, $16.00) is lighter, brighter. MAC Take the Plunge (P, $16.00) is more shimmery, darker. Chanel Sweet Star (LE, $29.00) is more shimmery, lighter. MAC Mountain Air (P, $20.00) is cooler. Gucci Beauty Iconic Ottanio (P, $32.00) is more shimmery, darker, cooler. Estee Lauder Electric Teal (LE, $20.00) is darker, less glossy. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Kat Von D Nerdrum Ink Liner ($19.00 for 0.019 fl. oz.) is described as a “sea blue.” It’s a muted, medium-dark blue with cool undertones and a mostly matte finish. It had semi-sheer color payoff, and it was buildable to semi-opaque coverage, but you have to be very, very careful or else it seems to erase what you put down. I had better luck trying to ramp up the coverage while it was still drying than when it had dried down. It had one or two flakes off over a sixteen hour period. MAC Deep Blue Sea (LE, $16.00) is more shimmery. MAC Mountain Air (P, $20.00) is warmer. Tarina Tarantino Glamorous Thief (P, $15.00) is more shimmery, lighter. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Kat Von D Nietzsche Ink Liner ($19.00 for 0.019 fl. oz.) is described as a “periwinkle.” It’s a brightened, cornflower blue that leans purple with a mostly matte finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage when applied, and it was sort of buildable, but it was difficult to get the coverage to be even if you used more than one stroke. It lasted for sixteen hours with a couple of flaked off pieces (hardly noticeable). MAC Royal Wink (LE, $16.00) is darker. NARS Most Wanted (LE, $24.00) is darker. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

While I think these probably don’t perform super well, I think this may be a little skewed? They’re definitely okay to wear on the top and bottom, but really most liquid liners are supposed to used on the top mostly. I just think they should have been tested both ways.

Hi AW,

I have issues wearing product against my actual upper lash line (my lash line gets red, itchy, and can start flaking/get really dry and sometimes my eye starts to swell up entirely, depends on how long before I removed, but it’s like eczema on that area), but I did try them ON the lid (I just have to do it about 1/4 inch above the lash line) as well for application, but for wear I am only comfortable wearing it on the lower lash line.

Christine Avatar

Definitely they do, but you should be able to use it on the lower lash line (I definitely see plenty of really cool looks with exaggerated eyeliner on lower and upper lash line) – since I just don’t feel comfortable testing on the mobile lid portion, I do the wear testing on my lower lash line, but I always play with the eyeliner itself for application on the skin of the lid since I want to try on the thinner skin there as well as see how it maneuvers around the curvature of the eye.

I have the same, but opposite problem – it’s my lower lash line that gets irritated. I’ve taken to applying a wet powder rather than a pencil. Now that it seems to be getting better (maybe due to summertime?), I was going to try a long wearing eye shadow as a liner because I can never get them to last very long.

Its totally off topic but I really want your suggestion on teal eyeliner …
teal liner coral lips are your favourite and now even I have started collecting like obedient follower ….

you think Nars abbey road larger than life liner is good choice if I want to try formula and also to add another teal in my collection ??
or do you have any other recommendations. ??

Thanks in advance dear

Ahh so disappointing! Even the applicator itself looks sooo dry. I think I’ll need to place an order for some Fluidlines as I’ve been wanting a matte, intense pop of color eyeliner!

Oh my goodness, what a shock!! I would expect much better of Kat Von D. Her line is usually known for pigment, and her Trooper liner got rave reviews. The pic says it all -it looks terrible, like something you would get at a dollar store, and I can see where the line :bleeds” in the swatches. Such a shame, because I love the blue colors, so unusual and pretty

lauren Avatar

What a bummer. I guess I’ll stick to the Tattoo Liners. I wish they came in colors other than black or brown, but they’re my favorite so I don’t mind terribly!

Zoë Avatar

I really love the black liner from KVD but these just seem … strange. too bad cause the colours are pretty, but liner is hard enough for me without the runny hassle!

Marissa Avatar

the only think i can say is that i like the names! (the colors were interesting i wanted them to work decently ☹☹☹)

(the liner on your lower lash line i cry)
(is it just my idea or kat von d’s products are becoming really underperformed lately? i haven’t forgotten the gothica eyeshadow issue from the star studded eyeshadow palette/book… and the dryness of the studded kiss lippies) (the only ones that got my attention (and didnt were thaaat bad) lately are the liquid lipsticks)

Christine Avatar

LOL! The gritty, sandy Gothica will never be forgotten!

I think the Ink Liners have been lesser received than her Tattoo Liner – reviews even on the Ink Liners seemed quite mix even prior to the new shades releasing, but the Tattoo Liner reviews are consistently good.

And while I’m with you on the dryness of the Studded Kiss line, they seem extremely popular nonetheless! I’m hoping that the newer shades the brand has slated for summer or fall (I think it’s summer…) are better, though.

Marissa Avatar

I forgot about the tattoo liner! i don’t have it but it’s extremely popular and loved by a lot of people (i want it to see if it’s worth the hype i think it won temptalia’s reader’s choice 2014)

I think the popularity about the lipsticks are the studded packaging and the not-your-average shades (see coven, poe or a go go)

yeah, i’m hoping that the upcoming products are better, she has a very cool aesthetic and i wish all her products were as good as advertised. i hope the new shades get your attention to see some swatches! xx

Nietzsche is a GORGEOUS colour, but I can see why these got a C/C+. They’re pretty translucent and streaky! I want a good formulation of that colour though. It’s just beautiful.

Jane Avatar

I feel like this just sort of sums up my love/hate relationship with felt pen-style liners. I love the level of control you get with them, but they bleed into lines and they’re patchy and they dry out and get gummed up when you use them over shadows…

Nicole Avatar

I bought Nerdrum at the Spring Sephora sale, used it once and retuned it. I don’t do super well with liquid liners and the fact that there is no room for correcting mistakes made this so very frustrating for me. It took everything I had to not literally throw it out the window. I also got the other KVD style of liquid liner in the new brown shade ( I have Trooper already). That kind works really well. I was hoping they would work similar because I love the colors. So for now, pencils and gels are the best I can find. I noticed Stila’s liquid pen comes in a lot of colors when I was at Ulta. have you tried those Christine?

Nicole Avatar

Thanks Christine. Maybe I’ll try one out in the future. With all the shades available in gel formulas and considering those are much easier for me,it’s no rush. 🙂

Genevieve Avatar

To be honest, for me to try to use these without my glasses….. the pointy end is like a spike.
The only good thing about these are the colours – very pretty colours, but I can tell by the photos that they are way too patchy and difficult to use. No wonder they got a C.

Marlene Avatar

What I hate the most about those poor grades is that the colours are just STUNNING, and the coloured Tattoo liners can’t even compare because they are metallic or glittery, if I’m not mistaken. My eye area is SO wrinkly, and I’m only 29… I could never get away with that amount of bleeding. I really, really wanted to try those, but the formula is horrible and I can’t use pen liners to save my life (true story, I can only use gel, pencil or the liquid ones that come with the fine brush applicators, like the Bourjois and the urban decay ones). I just can’t justify importing those :/ I’m so sad.

Whitney Avatar

The swatch of Nietzsche looked so beautiful, then I saw it being sad on the lower lashline. 🙁 I think I’ll stick with Stila for now. I’m disappointed but not surprised…even her best-selling black one is less opaque on me compared to the Stila (although the felt-tip is firmer and easier to use).

Roro Avatar

huge hoarder of KatVinD Makeup. Her tatoo liner in trooper is a staple for me but her ne ink liners arent good imo. They skip, drag, tug, cant go over it to build. feathers, dries fast and is just so urghhhhh. If the colors were put into the Tatroo ormat they would be amazeballs. but they arent. sorry #justsayin

Pearl Avatar

I’m wondering how Nietzsche compares to the Stila liquid eyeliner in Periwinkle bcos they have one in a similar colour too 🙂
