Items of Intrigue, Vol. 008

I love, love learning about what products grab your attention! It helps me figure out what I should spend time reviewing (and what NOT to!). Here are five things that have caught my attention recently…

  • NARS Kudoku Kabuki Lip Set ($125.00) is a limited edition holiday set that combines art and beauty; it’s certainly something to buy more as a keepsake than as a really practical way to wear lip color.
  • Estee Lauder Pure Color Gelee Powder Eyeshadow ($24.00) look really fun and the design kind of reminds me of the Chroma Eyeshadows MAC did eons ago (which I have no experience with; I have only seen photos of them!).
  • Laura Mercier Rose Rednezvous Face Illuminator ($42.00) looks gorgeous in the pan, and I’m wondering ho wmuch of that metallic sheen goes through the product or if a lot of it is just an overlay.
  • Make Up For Ever Highline Palette ($45.00) looks like a fun fall palette! I’m curious to see how the quad packaging functions.
  • Sachajuan Volume Powder ($32.00) is a powder-based spray to help give volume but also seems to act a bit like a dry shampoo? Hmm. Has anyone tried this?

What beauty products have intrigued you lately?

If it makes you feel any better, the Mac Chroma shadows were a total bust. They looked amazing in their pans, with this shimmery duochrome finish and then you swiped them with a brush and realised that the effect was only an overspray. You were left with a muddy, fairly matte base colour and a snakeskin imprint.

On the other hand, I’m super-curious about those EL shadows too! I keep wanting to grab the hybrid gel-cream-powder highlighter from their Fall collection, but it’s so shimmery I’m scared.

lol i dont think you should be worried about the shimmery-ness of the EL highlighter, since even if decided you wanted it, it is absolutely sold out everywhere.

I am also intrigued by the Laura Mercier highlighter and EL shadows. they look amazing.

I’ve got my eye on that Laura Mercier Illuminator too, I’ve been swatching it every time I go into Sephora and I think I might end up getting it, it’s so pretty. If I can find it that is, I noticed it’s sold out in a couple of places already.

Rose Rendezvous is spectacular! It’s not really metallic but has a wet-look sheen on the skin. No overlay. Great quality. I don’t love LM packaging though. It looks and feels cheap for such a special product.

oo If those Estee shadows are just like the highlighter that came out, I’m going to have to try them. Interestingly enough the Estee gelee highlighter is very similar in color on me to this Laura Mercier one, the Mercier being maybe a touch pinker. Love them both!

I had to return the LM Rose h/l. It was just not dry-skin friendly, sitting on top of my skin rather than melting in. A shame since it’s so pretty to look at!

I don’t have that hair powder, but I just got one that is a keratin powder. My hair is thinning in spots and when I use this powder, the keratin bonds to the hair and makes it look noticeably thicker. I’ve gotten compliments each time I’ve used it.

I, too have swatched the LM face illuminator many times but have not yet decided whether or not I need it. I have tried several other products in LM Moonlight collection: the orchid shimmer tightline eyeliner, twilight polish, and crystal beige luster shadow and am very happy with those purchases. Will probably go back for the illuminator and deep garnet shadow and maybe raspberry sorbet lipcolor as well.

I have two of the EL eyeshadows and they are gorgeous! The texture is very similar to their Illuminating powder gelee, if not the same. In my humble opinion they are very good 😀 I’m actually thinking on getting the other colors (if I can find them).

Hi Christine!
I am currently using my first can of Sacha Juan Volume Powder. I wouldnt say its a dry shampoo. I think its mostly designed to provide lift at the root and texture especially if your hair is really clean and not holding a back-comb. It does a really good job of making my hair look thick and lifted at the root on flat days. I dont use it like a dry shampoo though, it makes your hair very matte, and its hard to run your fingers through your hair once this is in. Hope this helps!

I saw the LM highlighter in store, and swatched it. The word gorgeous does not do it enough justice! I’d love it if you could review the Nars lip set, as well as the EL eyeshadows. The MFU palette, and hair volume power don’t really catch my eye.

The sheen on the LM highlighter isn’t an overlay, it goes all the way through. It’s INSANELY shiny and pigmented – you have to use a teensy amount to use it as a face highlighter. I think it makes a better eyeshadow than a highlighter.

I would love a review on the Laura Mercier Rose Rendezvous Face Illuminator… I’ve seen that several times on the Sephora website and keep coming back to it.

Alternately, I would skip reviewing the NARS Lip Set, mostly because while it looks awesome and the concept is cool, it might be a bit cumbersome in practice, and I can only assume that is WAY over most people’s price range.

Girl you know I ordered ALL of those shadows! 😛 LOL! I’m excited, they are due to arrive on Thursday!

I was actually kind of torn on this one; I could have ordered on-line and had them ship overnight BUT it was a big order and I REALLY REALLY REALLY like the folks at the Estee Lauder counter where I shop so I ordered it all from them instead so they could get the sale 😛 Sounds silly but I’m silly that way. Thursday it is!

I actually have the NARS Kabuki set from last year, and I love it! It isn’t the most practical thing, but it looks pretty on my desk and I really like both of the colors. It took me a while to finally break down and use them, but I figured what was the point of letting them go bad. When I finish them I’ll have pretty tea cups!

I have pretty thick hair and the volumizing powder works well at lifting at the roots, but as someone else mentioned, it leaves the hair matte and almost gives a white, powdery effect on my black hair. It’s made with potato starch, which is pretty interesting. Heh. It works mildly well as a dry shampoo but it has hold unlike the T3 dry shampoo I use.

I wound up hauling the Laura Mercier Illuminator, it’s so pretty, I was obsessed with it from the minute I seen it, I knew it must be mine!
