Illamasqua Obsidian Eyeshadow
Illamasqua Obsidian Eyeshadow
Illamasqua Obsidian Eyeshadow (£15.50 for 0.07 oz.) is described as a “rich black.” It’s a medium-dark black with brown undertones and a mostly matte finish. MAC Dark Dare is comparable. theBalm Serious is a smidgen lighter. MAC Carbon has a similar intensity though it tends to be sheerer.
The texture is soft but not powdery, and it blends easily on the lid. I think with black eyeshadow blendability is even more important, because you may just want to darken an existing color and other times, you’ll want the color to play a central role in the look. It had good color payoff, and it applied smoothly and evenly. It’s not the blackest black eyeshadow I have seen, but it has a nice level of darkness that can also be used without looking dramatic right off the bat. When I wore this shade, it managed to stay on for eight hours (without a base) with no creasing or fading.

What IS the blackest black eyeshadow you’ve ever seen, Christine? 🙂
There are a lot: Sugarpill Bulletproof+, Urban Decay Blackout, Milani Pitch Black, Guerlain les Ombres de Nuit, MUFE #4.
Thanks for this!
PS – Yoou’re such a sweetheart for answering the same question over and over in the comments lol =)
Keep up the great work!
No problem – since comments need approval, it’s not like anyone can see what someone else asked, so it’s all good 🙂 I just hope y’all don’t mind if I copy and paste, lol!
I just said “Bless you, Illamasqua!” out loud.
… It’s a good thing my BF already knows I’m crazy.
What is the blackest black eyeshadow you have found?

What is the blackest black you own?
Currently my blackest is Urban Decay’s Black Dog from the Black palette and I’m pretty happy with it but if I could get something even darker I’d be thrilled!

Yep, that has my name written all over it. No shimmer, no glitter, no nothing, just black. But not too black 😉
Christine, what’s the blackest black (preferably matte/non-glittery) eyeshadow you’ve come across? I’m always swatching every black eyeshadow I come across but they just never seem dark enough for my taste! I’m a sucker for dark eyeshadows but I only have one non-sparkly black in my collection.(Black Dog on UD’s Black Palette).

Thanks so much! I’ll definitely be checking those out this weekend – my poor credit cards are probably already hiding in fear!
What is the blackest back you’ve found that is high quality and lasts? I’ve always been disappointed by them. And this one looks too brown for me in the swatch.

Christine – Thanks for the swatch! You mentioned this isn’t the blackest black you have ever seen. What do you think is the best, darkest black shadow out there?
These are all about the same: Sugarpill Bulletproof+, Urban Decay Blackout, Milani Pitch Black, Guerlain les Ombres de Nuit, MUFE #4.
Thank you Christine, you rock!
This black has a very interesting finish, unlike other blacks I’ve seen.
Well, it’s certainly blacker than the Carbon you swatched last week! 😛 I find that I’m never at a loss for a sheer- to medium-opacity black (seeing as someone along the line decided it would be a fantastic idea to include one in every bloody palette), but a good one is hard to find — I’ll have to check out the ones you mentioned in the comments!
That’s not exactly a feat, LOL.
Ohhhh, I’m loving the slightly brown undertone. I may have to pick this up.
this is gorgeous, it is a satin black, so different
Really lovely. Will actually consider this when I have some money because -and I know this may take some convincing- I actually only have one black with no shimmer or glitter despite the amount of palettes I buy! Thank you for the great mix of posts on new releases and things that can be great staples 🙂
What would you say is the blackest eyeshadows you’ve seen?
What a coincidence! I just bought this eyeshadow and used it for the first time last night – I loved it! Thanks for the review, Christine, as always! I agree, it’s a 10/10 product 🙂
