How does your makeup routine change for summer?

Since I work from home and work all the time, it doesn’t change on a day-to-day basis. Living in Arizona where the sun feels like it beats on you even at 80 degrees (let alone 115-120 degrees!) means that I definitely opt for little to no makeup (and obviously, higher SPF) if I’m planning on being outdoors for an extended period of time (e.g. going to the zoo).

In summer, if I can find products that include a high level of sunscreen with something else, that’s what I’ll use to minimize the layers of product on my face. In the heat and humidity where I live (though we’re having SNOW in MAY – unbelievable but, of course, climate change is “fake news”, right?), having lots of layers on my face is uncomfortable so the wonderful Australian Gold tinted facial sunblock (thank you again, Heather!) has been a godsend. I will use Origins’ eye cream with SPF as well. And more than ever, eyeshadow primer is a MUST. And as much as I loathe matte lipsticks, I will often opt for a less slippy lip product (as much as I love the Sephora Lacquers, I use them less in summer as they’re so emollient and “smear-able”, as are other similar ones from Hourglass and YSL). It’s on of the reasons I like Kiehls ButterStick so much – it’s a good lip balm with some colour and while it keeps my lips from chapping and burning, it’s not greasy. And I’ll use more in the way of setting or mattifying powders. And I will usually have a small bottle of Evian or other misting water in my bag to wake myself and cool myself down if I’m stuck somewhere stiflingly hot.

Used the AG cocktailed with the Paula today. The Ulta is a good cheap alternative, and it washes off easily, good if you have to go out before you get ready, like dog walking. The AG needs oil and second cleansing, at least for me. Obviously, that means the AG is more impervious to sweat, rain, etc.

I find the untinted version of Australian Gold difficult to remove (I use it on my body in summer and was really surprised to see how it survived my shower….I don’t usually lather up my limbs as they don’t need it and my skin is dry but now I know if I use this sunblock, I have to lather my arms to remove it). But I find the tinted facial formula comes off just fine with my cleanser. I love it. I don’t have easy access to Paula’s Choice (I assume that’s what you meant, rather than having cocktails with a friend named Paula) nor to Ulta.

Last year, I got it at Shoppers and when I went back in the early fall to get more, it was gone because it’s one of their “seasonal” sunscreens – they don’t carry it all year. I’ve been checking for it this year and, so far, no luck, but I hope it comes in soon. I think you can also order it online from Well.ca but I’d sooner just pick it up in store if I can.

I only do if the temperature gets to 85°F or more, which most years isn’t very often around and during August. In that case, I go with much lighter makeup, and stay away from cream products and pencil eyeliners, because my very oily skin is made worse and combined with sweat.

1. Eye primer as usual. I use Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunscreen as face primer
2. BareMinerals Mineral Veil in Translucent
3. Powder Foundation
4. BareMinerals Mineral Veil in Translucent again
5. Powder blush and highlighter
6. One and done shimmery eyeshadow all over the lid. Usually a nude, taupe, bronze, or gold. I like to use Tarte ROTS Vol. 1 and 3 or MUFE Nudes You Need for this, or bareMinerals Eye Color in Nude Beach or Bare Skin.
7. Setting spray
8. First coat of mascara
9. Lipstick, lipgloss, or tinted lip balm. If I know I’ll be outside a lot or camping, I wear liquid lipstick or lipgloss, so it won’t be melting in my handbag.
10. Second Coat of mascara

I wear a lot of the same things all year around but in Summer I do gravitate toward certain shades and I wear lighter coverage foundation. I wear more simple eye looks and BB Cream for ex. I wear a lot of peachy looks and I do wear those type of shades at other times but maybe I don’t make it smoky with a deeper outer corner. I wear a single color and some mascara!

First off, I live in Arizona where seeing 110 to 120°F is not unusual during summertime. Add to that our seasonal monsoon with its oppressive humidity, plus I don’t drive and so rely on public transportation; I make as sure as I can that my makeup is bulletproof! This I do by using more than the usual amount of setting powder over my t-zone, using a longwearing foundation and liberal use of UD All-Nighter setting spray. The only positive thing is that the pollen count goes way down once we hit 100°F and above, so my allergy eyes calm down and I can get away with more fun looks.
Oh, and I won’t go outside without wearing my 40 SPF sunscreen underneath it all!

For color cos, pretty much the opposite of everyone else. Pink and coral look pretty bad, so there’s a lot of greige and sheer red/orange, etc. I actually love pastels and make them work in high summer. (Creepy Cute, eh, Rachel?) Maybe the shimmer to matte ratio in blush increases over the summer. But I live steps from the beach and try to go in the ocean every day, so no m/u is often indicated.

It really doesn’t for me. We rarely have excessive heat here in Montana during the summer and I have never been a big one for changing the shades I wear just because it is summer or winter or whatever. I do keep a bottle of MAC Fix Plus in the refrigerator during the summer just to use as a cooling mist if I have been outside working in the yard or something similar.

I really don’t know about this summer as I’m sure we’re all supposed to keep wearing masks. But pretending things are back to normal….it doesn’t get too hot where I live so it’s just adjusting for increased warmer daylight (rather than overcast light or cloudy light). So for daytime makeup spent outside, it’s using spf, use less powder products, more cream & liquid products, bronzing instead of contouring. In the evening, I’d just use my favorites–so more powder products. If I go anywhere hot and humid, then I’d just use less makeup in general (especially foundation).

Just a color shift for me. Oh, and texture too. Lighter, brighter, more bronzey, more shimmer/dewiness and less matte. I hate visible powder – it seems more obvious in bright daylight.

I switch to Avene’ SPF 50 high protection tinted compact .
Instead of regular foundation .
Also I switch up my Fall/ Wintery deep shades
for more golden bronzes , peach and corals.

For Summer just a lighter application of my base and I like to use peachy and bronze colors to correspond with my fake tan. Less eye make up to lean toward a more natural look during the day, Heavier eye looks in the evenings, that is if we ever get to go anywhere again.

I keep it simple in the summertime, the only makeup I wear besides doing my brows is Too Faced Sweetie Pie Radiant Matte Bronzer which is like a 3-in-1 product (bronzer, blush, highlight) in my opinion. If I need to tone down excess glow from sunscreen I’ll add Too Faced Peach Blur Translucent Smoothing Finishing Powder over it. Lip balm with SPF is a must.

I may wear eyeshadow less and find that just running around doing errands may cause my regular foundation color to not match based on getting a slight amount of sun on my face so I may blend twocoloes together. I sometimes will abandon foundation altogether if I have to be outside for any length of time. Last summer I took a small group of students on a field trip to an animal shelter and we walked both ways and I think my foundation was a long forgotten memory by the time we got back to school. Live and learn.

The only basic change I make for summer is to strengthen my SPF sunscreen from SPF 20 to 50+ in my beauty routine. I also slather on sunscreen on my arms, neck and chest area as well.
I also tend to opt for more blue/teal and mint eyeshadow shades and a ginger/orangey lipsticks as well.

Hmmm…I live at high altitude so sun protection is very necessary. I wear Missha’s Perfect Cover 42spf PA +++BB cream but set it with setting powder, blush, highlighter, and bronzer from my Hourglass Ghost palette. (The Missha BB cream has a crap shade range and tends to look flat & grayish, Hourglass powders are perfect for warming it up, adding dimension, and a realistic glow.) Then it is just the bare minimum after that for me: mascara, kajal, clear brow gel, lip balm or gloss in a nude shade.
