How does a new brand get on your radar?

If readers talk up a brand that’s new (or new to me), that’s a huge way to get my attention, especially when I see it randomly mentioned as a favorite. Otherwise, good campaign visuals, diverse product ranges, and a strong direction in branding.

Please keep discussion on-topic, and if you have general feedback, a product review request, an off-topic question, or need technical support, please contact us!

Please help us streamline the comments' section and be more efficient: double-check the post above for more basic information like pricing, availability, and so on to make sure your question wasn't answered already. Comments alerting us to typos or small errors in the post are appreciated (!) but will typically be removed after errors are fixed (unless a response is needed).

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Thank you for understanding!

One word – TEMPTALIA! I’d never heard of Tarina Tarantino at all before seeing her products here (sadly, that company is now gone). If I see a new company or “new to me” company mentioned here with good reviews, my radar is blipping away! I may not purchase if there’s no “in person” option so companies like Sydney Grace, Clionadh (and a third indie company that Christine has been reviewing lately and whose name I can’t remember) may not get my business but they sure get my attention by virtue of the excellent photos on Temptalia and the reviews Christine has given them.

It depends.
I learn a tonne here from you reviewing new/indie brands that score well, but it all comes down to how available they are to me. If they are quite small, shipping can be way too much of a pain they fall off my radar pretty quickly. But If they are suddenly picked up by someone local or shipping becomes easier, It’ll renew my interest.
Packaging alone doesn’t do it, neither do strong messages or branding (although I can appreciate or applaud either) if I don’t need it, or if it doesn’t fit my lifestyle or aesthetic.

Usually by aggressive marketing by being featured 2-3 weeks in reviews (sponsored or not) from almost all beauty youtubers, just like what happened with LYS Beauty recently(or Rare Beauty, or Fenti Beauty a couple of years back). 😅 And usually that means that I’m almost annoyed from hearing so much about it that I’m not interested in checking not out at all.

But a new brand gets into my radar in a positive way, making me curious to check it out, when I randomly see them mentioned in a favorite video.

A new brand gets on my radar by being reviewed here, by you Christine. I simply don’t trust any brands that haven’t been reviewed here. Positive ratings, shades and finishes I like (in lipsticks, eyeshadows and blushes), positive feedback from readers here on this blog etc.
This blog makes all the difference to me!

Here, actually. There are a lot of brands I don’t think I’d ever heard of if it wasn’t for Temptalia, some I have bought from, some not.
I don’t follow influencers or you tubers and hardly ever use Instagram anymore, I used to but got tired of it. I might try Reddit, mentioned by Lesley above for skincare.
I also sometime read newsletters that can mention cosmetics or skincare, but when it comes to eye, lip and cheek products I check here before buying.

Other than specific mentions such as in a review or promo, I often find out about new brands in the comments sections here and elsewhere. Often it’s a name mentioned in passing in response to something else entirely that piques my curiosity and gets me digging.
