How do you rotate through your collection?

I don’t do a lot of rotation, but I try to go through my “go-tos” every six months or so and move anything out that I can’t recall thinking about at all–this is often propelled by wanting to put something new in and not having room! Otherwise, the way I use makeup doesn’t really lend itself to rotating in a meaningful manner so it’s not something I get too concerned about personally!

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! I probably sound like a broken record from my other posts but I pull out products to use each month based on season, my level of sun exposure, etc. Some products stay in rotation for longer than one month but many get swapped out; mainly foundation, blush, bronzer, and highlight. I also tend to use cream products in the drier, colder months and powders the rest of the time.

I’d like to start a weekly makeup basket—partly to better appreciate my collection, partly to diminish decision fatigue—but haven’t done so yet. My collection is fairly well-organized by product type, though, and I don’t always reach for the same items so most of it gets used at least occasionally.

I have a small enough collection now that most things seem to get a fair amount of equal use. Though, I do switch out lip products seasonally. There are just some colors/formula that I like wearing better at certain times of year. The lip products I do regularly use at the time are in an acrylic organizer, and I store the rest in a small Sterilite container that hasn’t three drawers: one has bullet lipstick, one has glosses/balms, and one has liquid lips.

This year, I was going to try, for e/s anyway, to assign a brand to each month. Kind of worked out, using 3 Adept palettes, with CP, SG, and V, respectively. They are always handy. Confess to mixing and matching, and using V less than the others. Also successfully used no a Nars blushes (biggest load in stash and with palettes out, there’s always something suitable.) MACs made a big appearance, some BM, the CFX that seems too rich/saturated at times. Lips, well it’s usually reds or greiges, and I don’t rotate much, except by what shade/hue I think goes best.

I’ve a list of all my lipstick and eyeshadows (the only products that I own an insane number, for other kind of product I’ve maximum a cople of pieces for type, when not only one, so no problem with rotation) and I wrote down each times I use them. That’s help me to rotate and use all equally. Moreover, every week I have a list of which product use, based on the other list of how many time I use a single shades. Regarding season, I generally don’t vary much between season, since I use all equally in a cyclic way. That’s mean orange lipstick in winter as well in summer, the same for a burgundy lipstick. The only exception is that I put aside fard when I tan in summer (because it doesen’t show anymore)

I don’t have a set system. I tend to wear a different look everyday, and use different color products accordingly. I try to make sure I’m using at least one thing that’s “old” most days. Foundations and primers generally depend on what my skin is doing, where I’ll be going, and what I’ll be doing that day. Mascaras are thrown out and replaced every three months.

Generally I work out what I am wearing and go from there, particularly when considering eyeshadow shades. This autumn/winter I am going to try and use a different palette every day for neutrals and pops of colour.
In terms of my lipsticks, most of them are fairly similar shades ranging from browns to russet reds, orange and some berry shades.

No rotation.

Except when I see someone use a product or palette I already have and think, “Wait, I have that!”
Happend today when I saw Lolaliner use the Charlotte Tilbury Glowgasm light palette this week and dug it out today and was thrilled to use it.

Other than that I have to swap out foundation from winter to summer.

I rotate eyeshadows/eyeshadow palettes, blush, highlight and lipsticks every 3 months – basically every change of season -, bronzer and foundation might be changed once I get a bit of a tan on (but I don’t do that often because I live in a colder country and changes in my coloring are not that drastic since a while ago).

I’ve been playing a game of one eyeshadow palette per day. It’s lots of fun to pull out whatever is next and just go with it. Since it’s likely that I’ll be moving house once lockdown is over, it’s also giving me a chance to visit each of them and determine whether they make me happy. I went nuts when I first got into makeup in a serious way, so now I’m paring down to my happy place.

Usually Sundays I’ll pick out a few things I want to play with during the week and put them in an organizer I keep on the bathroom vanity so they’re close to hand. I don’t pick out my outfits but I do pick my makeup so, you know, priorities lol It usually includes a little bit of everything so that I get a chance to move through what I have and rediscover forgotten gems. I do have a few favorites that tend to jump the line and end up staying in the organizer semi-permanently, though.
