Hourglass Verse Extreme Sheen High Shine Lip Gloss
Hourglass Verse Extreme Sheen High Shine Lip Gloss ($28.00 for 0.17 fl. oz.) is described as a “light beige shimmer.” It’s a light-medium, peachy-beige with bronze and lighter peach shimmer. MAC Nectarsweet (LE, $20.00) is lighter. Urban Decay Freestyle (P, $20.00) is darker. bareMinerals Dazzler (LE, $18.00) is less shimmery. Revlon Peach (P, $7.49) is similar. MAC Sublime Shine (LE, $20.00) is simiar. MAC Satin Slip (LE, $20.00) is slightly warmer. See comparison swatches.
The formula is supposed to be “richly pigmented” with a “high-shine” finish that is also hydrating. While I have definitely used shades in the range that fit the bill as far as intense pigmentation goes, Verse is significantly short of “richly pigmented.” It’s more sheer to semi-sheer with a fair amount of shimmer but little in the way of color; adds warmth and evens out the natural lip color but does not alter it much. The consistency is light-medium in weight, thin but noticeable applied, and lightly tacky. It lasted two and a half hours, and after wearing it twice in a row, it seemed to be moderately hydrating. I wish I had bought a different shade–if this had been opaque, I’d have been so much more impressed.

This gloss is coming off my wish list 🙁 for something so expensive ($42 in Australia) I expect better quality. Bummer! Cute earrings, Christine!
Thanks, Ella!
I wish I had picked a different shade. Needed $50+ to get free shipping so I was like, “Oh, I’ll try that,” but bah.
Too bad it’s so sheer. That said, it does look nice on your lips though.
Thanks!
For the price, you’d expect some amount of opacity – especially when they make the claim that it’s “richly pigmented”! Hopefully the other shades don’t disappoint.
I wouldn’t expect it necessarily based on price, because people like sheerer glosses and they come at all price points, but since they said it was richly pigmented, I would!
I’ve bought some Hourglass lip losses before (from Costco of all places) and I really wasn’t impressed with them. They look gorgeous in the packaging but barely any color sticks and they don’t last long, in my experience. Since then, they have repackaged so maybe their formula has changed a little? I’ll stick with my beloved Dior Addict Ultragloss for now.
Some shades are nice – like Siren – but it seems like a lot of the shimmery shades are on the sheer side, which would be fine if it was clearer that this distinction really did exist!
Pretty shade! too sheer to work for me 🙁
Same!
Christine, this would have been perfect for me. Can you recommend anything that is about this color and richly pigmented?
Haven’t found one yet 🙁
Try Perscriptives glosses. I have a gold shimmery one that is opaque and it is beautiful! Also, Lancome has a nice bronze gloss. It’s called Temptress or something like that. It looks a little brownish in the tube, but it comes out a pretty bronze.
Too bad it didn’t work out, the color in the tube looked like it was a match made in heaven for you!
If only!
I have heard mixed things about the Hourglass glosses. This shade doesn’t do much for me, but I love the sparkle in it.
I LOVE Siren! That’s my favorite.
I like this style of glosses, they look great on top of lipstick since they don’t alter color so much and add sparkle 😀 But they should write it in shade description, which ones are opaque and which are not! Btw, how does stickiness compare on this one vs Nars Lip Gloss? I love how non-sticky the nars one feel, but the plastic smell on some of them is terrible, so thinking of switching brands to something else not-sticky. Thanks!
This is lightly sticky but thinner then NARS’ gloss!
I…hm.
Well, it is pretty, just taken by itself, but for that price and those claims… probably better to go with any one of the million sheer sparkly lipglosses you can get at the pharmacy 😉
Agreed, Sylirael!
Perfect timing! Last night I was looking at this, in “Ignite.” It’s part of a “best of” set and now I’m going to wait. Thanks for saving me some money. 🙂 It really did look like a beautiful shade that would have worked for me had it been pigmented.
No problem, Veronica! 🙂
I’m so over all of these expensive sheer glosses!
Awww!
Pretty but too sheer. How disappointing…
I really wish it had lived up to its description!
I guess this is a shade that either works for you or doesn’t. I am very pale, and I love mine. It’s perfect for when I’m doing “no makeup makeup.” It literally looks like just licked, full, soft lips on me. I’m sorry it didn’t work out on you 🙁
Hi Alexandra!
It’s not a bad gloss, but it’s not at all as described – so that’s my problem with it! If you like sheer gloss, it’s great, but since Hourglass says they’re richly pigmented, it’s not as they claim.
