Don’t Be Such a Loudmouth!

Hourglass Muse Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick ($28.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “coral red.” It’s a vibrant coral-red with a neon quality that gives it this really bright, bold look. This is a color that says, “Hey! You! Did you see THIS lip color?!” It has a strong warm, orange pull to it. Illamasqua Mistress is the closest dupe I could think, even though it’s a gloss–color-wise, they’re very similar with Muse being slightly more intense. Wet ‘n’ Wild 909D is similar but a bit softer. Dolce & Gabbana Cosmopolitan is lighter, less red.

This formula is supposed to be extremely pigmented, last 14 hours without flaking or drying out the lip, and have a matte finish.  While it feels and looks like a liquid lipstick initially, this dries down like a second-skin onto the lips.  It takes about thirty seconds or so for the color to dry down and set to a matte finish.  It’s not 100% transfer-proof, but it’s about 90% there.  I’ve found that once I’ve had a meal, that’s really when the breakdown of the lip product begins and ramps up to the point where you’ll see more and more transfer and flaking of the lip color (as well as the lip color breaking apart).  I’m not surprised, given that most cosmetic products breakdown from oil, and many meals will have some sort of element that can contribute to it.

When I tested out the wear of Muse, I made sure to put it on and wear it for as long as I could before subjecting it to a meal, which ended up as five hours, and then it continued to have decent-looking color/texture for a few more hours to the sound of nine hours.  As we neared the 10-hour mark, it wasn’t looking so good, and definitely needed to be removed and reapplied. Not the 14 hours as touted, but it was better than Raven.  As it wears down, I found bits of lipstick on my teeth throughout the evening, so it’s something to be aware of.  I’m still impressed that the formula isn’t at all drying and really must help locking in the moisture, because despite wearing just this for eleven hours, my lips didn’t feel any need for lip balm.

Agreed 🙂 I have two of the Guerlains and I love them, and ‘m considering getting a third (maybe Orgueil?) but I don’t know as I want these. The Guerlain is also a lot more product tahn these.

Which two do you have? I have Orgueil, but I haven’t had a chance to wear it yet because I keep swapping back and forth between Colere and Gourmandise. It’s official, I love Gourmandise the most… it’s the right balance of everything for my skintones. Oooh, and today I received Avarice which I ordered separately and it’s just not my colour sadly. Perhaps paired with different makeup it will work better as I was pulling a Siouxie look today and it wasn’t jiving with gobs of stark black eyeliner and Coral blush. I’ll give it a go with a more subdued look before I condemn it to the back drawer. I really do love Paresse as well as it is just one of those shades that will go with virtually any look.. I’m just so caught up with the sexy brights right now, everything pales in comparison.

I have Paresse and Avarice, and I love, love, love Paresse. It’s a perfect wearable everyday pink, but it’s not boring at all. I haven’t had a chance to wear Avarice yet because I’m so in love with Paresse, but when I get home I’ll play with it some more, I think. Gourmandise was too bright for me, and Colere I think was too orange, but I’m considering Luxure, maybe, or Orguiel.

As a side note – I was at Sephora today swatching the MUFE Aqua Rouge line, and the “Pink” one (I forget the number; maybe 15?) looked very similar to Paresse to my eye. I didn’t have Paresse on me to compare but I’ll doublecheck back at home to see if I’m right. I ended up getting #14, light rosewood, instead.

Christine, I’m really interested to know what is in your opinion the best long-wearing lip formula you’ve encountered. Whether it be a lipstick, stain, etc, what product lasts the best throughout the day, including eating and drinking?

Christine Avatar

Lip liner + longer-wearing darker lipstick + loose powder + more lipstick. It’s more in the prep/application, IMO. For instance, for business events, I often wear a power red, so I start with a red lip liner, layer the red lip product over it, and if it’s a lipstick, then pat loose powder, add more lipstick, and head out. I wore Chanel Dragon for 10-12 hours without touching up at a conference (I wasn’t allowed to leave a certain area, so I had no lunch/drinks). Generally, darker lip products also stain, so even as they wear away, it’s hard to tell.

Christine, somebody said that this was a near exact dupe for MAC’s Party Parrot.. what do you think? Wanted to get your opinion before I dropped $30 on it 🙂

I tried this on at Sephora and was so-so on how it looked… none of the colors were quite right for me. What really bothered me was the need to use an oil-based makeup remover to remove it. The liquid lipstick was fine on my lips, but my trusty oil-based eye makeup remover made them feel awful! And because of how it wears I can’t just let it fade away like I do with regular lipsticks.

I’m actually more looking forward to the four new Femme Rouge lipstick colors, because I think I want three of them…

I have this in Red (whatever their crazy name for it is) and I really love it. I think its a combo of the applicator and the matte dry down, but it really feels like I’m coloring my lips with a marker. Its a totally new sensation and I personally love this product. I intend to buy this color as well.

Hey Christine:

I know you have plenty of products on your plate but are you going to review Icon at some point? I always trust your opinion so I was hoping for your thoughts on that color after I saw the sneak peak and some other photos online of you with the shade on for a color vision page. Thanks!

Love your blog!

Great review, Christine! I love the colour of this one. 🙂 how do you feel the occ liptar compares with the hourglass liquid lipstick? I’m incredibly torn between the two and am not sure which to get!
