Guerlain Star Dust (900) Gloss d'Enfer Maxi Shine Lip Gloss Review, Photos, Swatches
Guerlain Star Dust (900) Maxi Shine Lip Gloss
Guerlain Star Dust (900) Maxi Shine Lip Gloss ($36.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as an “iridescent ray of pure light.” It’s a virtually clear gloss with multi-colored, iridescent shimmer that flashes aqua, green, blue, and pink. It’s slightly milky, so it mutes the natural lip color just slightly, and it has a fair amount of shimmer. MAC Oh My Darling (LE, $15.00) is similar when applied but not as iridescent. Giorgio Armani #700 (P, $29.00) is similar but slightly warmer in tone. MAC Impossibly Sweet (LE, $15.00) is pinker. See comparison swatches.
The shimmer is very, very fine, so I don’t feel the texture of the sparkle when wearing the gloss. Alone, it wears about two and a half hours, which is a little longer than I normally see with a gloss this sheer. It’s non-sticky, lightweight, and comfortable to wear. There’s a fruity, slightly perfume-y, scent but I didn’t notice any taste. When I wore this alone, it sparkles and shimmers, and in my office, I can actually see the bluish-violet sparkles as they catch the light. The effect is still subtle indoors, but outdoors it’s like a sparkle bonanza. I thought it did more when layered over a lip color, as it gave the iridescence a better backdrop. Guerlain described it being used as a “top coat” to “[add] a diamond shine.” (And this gloss formula varies from very sheer to semi-opaque, but given Guerlain’s descriptions, this one is supposed to be sheer.) I tried it over Insolence, and it gave it a glossier, more iridescent finish.

Ooh! It’s like a silver version of Canary, but with less shimmer. I bet it will look gorgeous over a cool-toned red lipstick. 🙂
I think it actually has a lot of shimmer, but it’s finer, so the effect ends up being subtler!
Reminds me of Chanel Surprise Glossimer! Looks very nice over Insolence though
This definitely looks like a great gloss to layer over lipstick!
Glad you liked it!
I’m not seeing anything special about it!
On its own it’s not that special, but over Insolence? Pretty!
I think on its own… you have to see it in person, LOL! There are times I think about doing video swatches, and then you know, time and effort and space tell me otherwise.
This definitely is at its best as a topper and is a great alternative to the gold and rose gold toppers that are ubiquitous this time of year. I wear Stardust over my rose and berry shades and it gives them a refined shimmer that plays beautifully with the light. My lips are naturally a medium rose so it is also pretty on its own, but it is even more so when worn over lipstick. If you’re going to add a dollop of gloss over your lipstick, it might as well be one as pretty as Stardust. There are cheaper ones out there, but Guerlain’s use of micro-shimmer in their Gloss D’Enfer formulation makes this an extremely comfortable and non-drying one. Stardust–fun and festive!
Happy to hear you’re enjoying yours, Eileen! 🙂 What berry shade have you tried with this one?
It’s really pretty over Madame Reve, Madame Batifole, and Rose Barbare. 🙂
Thanks, Eileen!
Nice suggestions there! I might just grab Stardust and try it over Madame Batifole and Madame Reve. 🙂
When I swatched this, I thought it was quite beautiful. I have an LE gloss from Revlon that has a similar effect, though, so it’s a pass for me. For those who enjoy their shimmery glosses though, it was quite pretty. 🙂
Do you remember what the Revlon gloss was called?
This reminds me of Crystal Water, though I can’t remember what colors the shimmer bits are.
Christine, I had posted comments on a couple of other posts a couple of days which still aren’t showing. Today I’m having trouble signing in. Lol, now it says I have two more attempts. What happens after two more failed attemps?
Hi Christine,
I’m behind by about 350 comments right now, so that’s why you aren’t seeing comments – because I haven’t had the time to respond and answer all the outstanding comments/questions in the queue!
If you are getting failed attempts, that would typically mean the password or the user name is wrong.
Ahhhh….thanks for the quick reply Christine. I do notice that my eye doesn’t show up now. Are there more than one place to be registered for on Temptalia?
To get back on topic…if I remember, tomorrow I’ll check to see what color the shimmer bits are in Crystal Water. It’s pretty on its own but stunning layered 🙂
I don’t know why the login issue is persisting 🙁 We have been looking into it, but we haven’t found a resolution yet (or at least, none of what we’ve implemented seems to have worked the kink out).
There’s just one login, but I’ll be sure to let the tech guys know about it on Monday to see if they have any other solutions they can try.
Thank you!
Also! Have you tried to login, and then refresh the page you’re on? I’m not sure if that will resolve it, but if it does, let me know. Thank you!
I have two, actually, now that I’m checking. The permanent line has Crystal Water, which has a very subtle shimmer and a translucent base. The LE gloss is from 2012’s holiday collection; it has a more dramatic, iridescent shimmer similar to Guerlain’s Star Dust, though it’s has a clearer base. (I also have a gold gloss from that LE collection, which is actually comparable to BB’s Canary in terms of glitter consistency, though the glitter is more neutral-toned.)
Thank you, Veronica! Good to know that Crystal Water is permanent and at least somewhat similar – since it is much cheaper, too!
I love that lip color on you! This gloss looks really pretty when layered!
Thanks, Fancie!
This is pretty, although I feel like there are quite a lot of glosses out there that do more or less the same thing (especially from a distance, which is how most people see you!).
Still, it looks so enchanting over that Insolence lipstick… 🙂
Very true! 🙂
Hmmm, looks prettier as a layering gloss! Over Insolence it looks so pretty!
Yeah, I think you’ll get more mileage out of it as a layering gloss!
Pretty. I have some old freebie sephora glosses that look similar, though
Christine, I fell in love with Star Dust…I wore it over, Rouge Allure Velvet L’Adoree (45)- Chanel Spring 2014 Collection. I had many compliments on New Years Eve. I did ‘pat’ it on, over the L’Adoree~~gave a striking look.
That’s awesome, Michele! So thrilled you’re enjoying yours! I definitely think it’s prettier in person than in a still photo!
This is so very pretty! I agree with Eileen – if you’re going to wear a topper it might as well be the prettiest one you can find! I also appreciate the lack of grit feeling on the lips. The subtlety, for me, is perfection.
It’s beautiful!
