A Holiday Pink That Sparkles

Guerlain Lou-Ling (760) Shine Automatique Lipstick ($35.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as an “enchanting plum set off with a golden sparkle.” It’s a pop of raspberry pink with a subtle shimmer-sheen finish. There is noticeable fuchsia and gold sparkle within the color. Tarina Tarantino Floriculture is similar, slightly pinker. Revlon Raspberry Pie is less red, pinker, cooler-toned. Guerlain Girly is redder. MAC Quite the Thing is cooler-toned and more fuchsia. MAC Scandelicious is similar but doesn’t have the sparkle.

It looked rather sheer when swatched, but applied to lips, the color opacity is nearly opaque–it was a little surprising, actually!  Shine Automatique is a long-wearing and hydrating with “bold” coverage.  Lou-Ling wore for six hours and left behind a light stain, and while there’s noticeable sparkle, it didn’t travel during the time I wore it but there was an ever-so-noticeable grit after three hours of wear.  It was comfortable to wear and apply–creamy and slick enough to glide on without pulling or tugging but no feathering or bleeding–and my lips felt hydrated during and post-wear.  It is scented with Guerlain’s signature violet fragrance.

Amazing! If it weren’t for your swatches though, I doubt I’d ever even consider this particular shade. You make everything so… tempting -pun intended 😉

Christine,

What would you say is the typical price point for a higher end lipstick? Is $35 considered to be quite pricey for a lipstick, or is it reasonable? Thank you! By the way, this color is amazing! I was sceptical at first with all the visible glitter in the tube, but it’s so beautiful!

High-end starts around $22-24 – that would be brands like UD, NARS, Too Faced, etc. Upper high-end, or designer, would be $30-$35. Luxury I’d say is anything nearing $40 or more (Tom Ford, Guerlain Rouge G, Cle de Peau).

So, the world in which $35 is reasonable is when compared to Guerlain’s Rouge G – which I think is up to $48 now. Rouge Automatique is very similar (not 100% the same), but it’s a very nice and comparable alternative to the Rouge G formula for $13 less (Rouge G has even fancier/more expensive packaging – which you pay for!).

The way I feel about price is: better to buy a lipstick you love and feel good wearing every time you wear it (and, hopefully, it’s a shade you’d wear often), rather than two or three lipsticks you like but don’t love.

It looks really pretty, especially the packaging is as luxurious and pretty as you expect for the price and from a brand like Guerlain, but is it just me or is the lipstick itself (the amount of lipstick) very small?

Joanna Avatar

i think she’s talking about the bullet of the actual product. my initial thoughts when i saw the photos was, “wow! that’s not much product!” it looks much shorter for a lipstick. glad to know the amount is comparable to most other brand’s lipsticks

This is exquisite! I wouldn’t have considered such a dark and sparkly looking lipstick, particularly not at that price, but I think it’s just lovely! I think it may look quite pretty with my cool and freckled complexion, so I might head over to Saks some time soon to check it out. Thanks for the review Christine!

This is beautiful! It looks great on you, and Guerlain’s formula is my favorite. I think it’s time I stopped blowing $8 at a time on so-so cheaper lipsticks and started buy just a few perfect lipsticks.

It’s not often that I go for glittery lip colours but I LOVE this one!!! Christine, are you really wearing ALL those eye shadows – 6 of ’em – at the same time. When I try that, I get a muddy mess.

Christine, I wonder if you can help me out. Or anyone familiar with the topic.
I think, I have a drugstore dupe for this colour. L’Oreal Paris on the Color Riche lipstick line had a shade called “Crystal Violet” which later resurfaced in the Stars’ Secrets edition renamed Milla’s Violet (after Milla Jovovich)
I had it on some 2 days ago and as I looked at your photos, it does look a carbon copy of the Guerlain one, based on the colour and even the shimmer. Still, not fully convinced.

Thanks for the review. I have never purchased a Guerlain lipstick & was thinking of this one. I will splurge on one of these RA soon but not sure if this will be “the one”. I’m a RN so I’d like to get one I can wear taking care of patients every day. Any suggestions from the group? I have Christine’s face group color. BTW how is the newlywed? So happy for you!

Beautiful color !
I wonder how you’d compare it to Guerlain Pour Troubler ? They seem very similar in the swatch gallery (but very different in the tube !).
Thanks !

WOW! SO not the colour I was expecting. From the tube I was expecting it to be more of a gilded burgundy colour, more baroque in feel. This is so light!

I actually fell in love with this lipstick as soon as I tried it on! Had to have it! You can wear it quite sheer or layer it on… I love it because it doesn’t settle into my lip creases and I usually have issues with that!

This is one of the most beautiful lipsticks I’ve ever seen in my life! But, unfortunately, here in Brazil is gonna be VERY expensive! (Can I travel just to get it? haha) xxx
