Guerlain Coque d'Or (03) Palette 5 Couleurs (Eyeshadow Palette) Review, Photos, Swatches
Coque d'Or (03)
Guerlain Coque d’Or (03) Eyeshadow Palette ($69.00 for 0.21 oz.) is a mix of beige, gold, bronze, brown, and green. This was one of the better performing palettes that Guerlain released, though I think the colors are more dupable than not, so at this price point, I would expect near perfection. It was a mix of textures, most of them underwhelming, but a few shades had better pigmentation. The wear was still problematic with shorter wear times than average.

Coque d'Or #1
Coque d’Or #1 is a light, yellowed beige with warm undertones and a mostly matte finish. The eyeshadow had a soft, lightly dusty feel to it, but it didn’t sheer out and was fairly easy to use on the lid. It faded after six hours on its own, but it should be better over a primer.

Coque d'Or #2
Coque d’Or #2 is a light-medium gold with warm, yellow undertones and a soft, frosted shimmer finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, but it was the texture that was problematic. It was drier, dustier, and had a tendency to separate and sheer out on the lid. The product just didn’t want to adhere to the skin, and even patted over primer, it was still missing something. I noticed significant fading after six hours of wear.

Coque d'Or #3
Coque d’Or #3 is a muted, medium-dark bronze with warm undertones and a soft, frosted finish. The consistency was soft, a touch dusty, but it was easily blended on the lid and did not lose its intensity or opacity. It had great pigmentation that applied well to bare skin. The formula started to fade after six and a half hours of wear.

Coque d'Or #4
Coque d’Or #4 is a medium brown with warm, golden undertones and a pearly sheen. The texture was firmer and stiffer in the pan, which made it harder to blend out on the skin, though it had good pigmentation. On me, it wore well for seven hours.

Coque d'Or #5
Coque d’Or #5 is a muted, medium-dark green with subtle, warm olive undertones and a mostly matte finish. Though they share the actual physical pan, this was even stiffer and firmer than its neighbor! It was so difficult just to get any product to show up in the swatch, let alone on the eye. I felt like I had to really jam my brush in and chip away at the surface to get a modicum of product on the brush. I was able to pack it on, and it was buildable, but it is not a shade I would try to blend out much. I noticed fading after six hours of wear.

Aw, sorry to hear the shades were underwhelming 🙁 They look so pretty!
I know! They come together nicely, but I wish the performance was better.
The colours piced for this palette is quite lovely – such a shame the quality doesn’t live up to it!
I know!
What can the brand be thinking, releasing eyeshadows like this? I don’t get it.
I wish I knew!
I know! Rhetorical question only, lol!
SIGHS. I’m the leader of the green eyeshadow army (my eye shadow stash is like, 70% greens!!) and this pallet is breaking my heart. This is so sad 🙁
I wish it performed better 🙁
Bad sign when a mostly neutrals palette gets a C-
So true!
Sad 🙁
I know! 🙁
Wow this is so weird, I have this palette and I really don’t have the same experience with the last shade. Yes it’s firmly pressed, but I have no problem picking up color and getting a very intense payoff… And it blends into the others seamlessly. I used it for smokey looks and I got many compliments.
Overall I really love this palette. Some of the shades taken individually are far from perfect, but they all work together extremely well for me, especially if I’m going for a gold to bronze gradient or dark bronze smokey eye.
I wish I had that experience, Lulle! I really liked the color combo of this palette.
The color theme looks like Chanel Empriente du Desert, but WITHOUT the great quality of Empriente du Desert. The Guerlain one has a very cheap looking formula, at least quality wise. Plus, they all just look very lackluster and “flat”.
Oooh, good eye, Nancy!
Shame. This would have been a lovely palette for hazel eyes.
Agreed!
This one looks so pretty and it’s the one I was really hoping would be good. Sigh…well, one less thing to spend $$$ on!
Money saved ;D
Christine, no links to dupes for #5?
Should be fixed – it didn’t save my link of dupes, so none of them were ever added. SO sorry!
I think the Guerlain line has gone the way of the Dior eye shadows. The brand has lost its touch – so sad.
Thank you for the review.
They really have!
I wonder if they think they have their customer base who will buy their products out of loyalty/snobbery (I don’t mean that as a put down – maybe what I mean is “perceived prestige”). I was at the Guerlain counter a few weeks ago and the SA – a very sweet young woman – was showing me that duo that Christine reviewed recently – a golden dark beige and a purple – and trying to “sell” me on it (she only had 4 in stock or some small # like that and there was no counter sample yet so she showed me one of the ones right out of the box). Had I not seen it reviewed here and learned, thanks to Christine, how poorly it performed, I’d have been agonizing about buying it. But I think they, like some other “prestige” brands, really do rely on people who are “married” to the brand and won’t buy anything else. How else do you explain fairly consistent sales of face creams in the $200 range that are actually fairly mediocre products or at least not worth of those high prices?
Pverall, not impressed for the money and the common colors. I did like #3. Just curious, why does thev4th pan always contain 2 colors? Seems odd. They must have a reason.
I’m guessing they figured you wouldn’t need as much of those, lol!
It’s a good thing that most of us registered the crummy rating for this because, you know, looking at the look you’ve created, Christine, I’m sure I’m not the only one who would rush out to get this because you have made such a lovely look with it (fortunately, you also warn us about how bad it is!)
Aw, thank you though! 🙂
At least…in this ever-changing world, we have the constant that Guerlain eyeshadow releases will always be underwhelming.
LOL!
