Fyrinnae Arcane Magic: Alchemist's Curse Eyeshadow
Fyrinnae Arcane Magic: Alchemist’s Curse Eyeshadow

Fyrinnae Alchemist’s Curse Arcane Magic Eyeshadow ($6.80 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “pink shimmer and sparkle on black.” It’s a deep, blackened purple with pink shimmer. The texture is soft, finely-milled, and smooths out whether applied damp or patted over Fyrinnae’s Pixie Epoxy. This one was supposed to shift to a “golden green” when closer to light or held at a different angle, but no matter how I maneuvered my arm, I only saw it go from purpled-black to black with pink sparkle. I even tried using a mirror to see the effect so I could stand further away but no luck. Nevertheless, the way this sparkles as it catches the light (with movement) reminds me of Swarovski crystals–it’s very sparkly and shimmering. It was fully pigmented with both applications. Disney Wonder by Wonder is less shimmery. Urban Decay Tornado is lighter. MAC Young Punk has larger shimmer. Bobbi Brown Black Violet is lighter, cream. See comparison swatches.

Pyromantic Erotica Arcane Magic Eyeshadow ($6.80 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “deep orange with an obvious chartreuse highlight.” It’s a bright tangerine orange with a golden shimmer-sheen. It was smooth, even, and richly pigmented both applied damp and over Pixie Epoxy. At a certain angle, it looks like a deeper orange, and in person, the shimmer almost looks green-ish at certain angles. Maybelline Fierce & Tangy is a cream product, less shimmery. Illamasqua Vulgar is darker, matte. Chanel Pearl River #4 is lighter. OCC Mimosa is lighter. See comparison swatches.

Superstar Eyeshadow ($6.25 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “very bright hot pink, graced with a subtle blue highlight.” It’s a bold, brightened medium pink with an icy shimmer that gives it a satiny finish. It had a very finely-milled texture that allowed it to be applied smoothly and evenly. It was richly pigmented, and it looked near to glowing applied. Sugarpill Dollipop is darker, matte. Urban Decay Noise is more muted. Milani Shocking Pink is bluer-based and matte. MAC Infra-violet is slightly more muted and a cream product. Sugarpill Birthday Girl is darker. Inglot #362 is darker, less shimmery. See comparison swatches.

Something I’ve noticed with Fyrinnae’s eyeshadows is that though they advocate using both Pixie Epoxy as well as a true eyeshadow primer (as Pixie Epoxy is for help getting the shimmer and sparkle to adhere, while also giving a “foiled” look without using the product wet, not to actually prolong wear or prevent creasing/fading), all of the shades lasted nine hours on me without fading or creasing.  This is true whether I’ve just applied the shades to bare skin or applied over Pixie Epoxy. The only difference I noticed was that when I used them on bare lids, Alchemist’s Curse gave me some minor fall out after a full day of wear, and when worn over Pixie Epoxy there was almost no fall out visible, but I was still rather impressed by how minimal the fall out was even without any type of base or adhesive help.

These look amazing! My first Fyrinnae order is on it’s way here. Slightly off topic, but I understand Pixie Epoxy is not a primer, just a vehicle for brightening and making glitter/frosty shadows adhere better? Do you wear primer under Pixie Epoxy or is the epoxy enough to create a lasting hold? I have quite greasy eyelids and wear NARS primer everyday. Thanks for your help!

Christine Avatar

Hey Wendy!

Yep, Pixie Epoxy is really just an adhesive base – and the effect is both that it keeps glitter/sparkle in place better but also mimics the effect of applying a product wet. I haven’t had the need to wear primer under Pixie Epoxy or under Fyrinnae’s eyeshadows alone… only because they seem to last all day for me, no primer. I get the same wear in terms of fading/creasing (none) applied damp on bare lids or applied dry over Pixie Epoxy. I get minor fall out if I use one of the sparkly shades straight on bare lids but it’s surprisingly little fall out.

Fyrinnae says for prolonging wear to layer your favorite primer under Pixie Epoxy, though. Most eyeshadows last at least 6 hours decently on me, many going to 7-8 with some fading/creasing but not like… invisible. I have normal-to-dry lids!

Thanks for the info, Christine! I was afraid too much base eye product could make my eyelids heavy and accentuate creasing and wrinkles. I’ll try with just the expoxy alone first.

Jen Avatar

That is seriously impressive for less than seven dollars, especially considering the L’Oreal Infallible eyeshadows can run around the same price or higher and have ridiculous amounts of fallout.

And the pigmentation looks like it rivals that of Urban Decay or Mac, neither of which I can wear without my eyes and face becoming a red, itchy nightmare.

Hey Christine! So happy to see you decided to get some of the new formula shadows and review them since our last discussion! So worth it I am sure you will agree? This look is gorgeous. I have Pyromantic Erotica and love it so much but think I will have to add the other two to my vast collection of Fyrinnae loose shadows! Delighted to see you rating these phenomenal products which are so affordable. Thank you. Hope to see some more Fyrinnae looks in the future. x

Kate Avatar

Ah ok good to have that info thank you. Also good for you that you can review your many Fyrinnae shadows without having to replace them all lol! Thanks again for all the time effort and hard work you put into this fabulous site for the benefit of all us make up junkies out there. x

These are beautiful! I actually have Alchemist’s Curse on the way, but I really love Fyrinnae’s shadows. I discovered them about three years ago and am determined to own every shadow, which is easy because of sample sizes and incredible prices.

Have you tried any of their other products? Their lip lustre’s are awesome, very moisturizing and long lasting. I have some of their blushes on the way in sample form too. I like their finishing powders too, I find their makeup makes me glow, literally. I cant say enough good about Fyrinnae, and of course, Pixie Epoxy is HG for most of my eyemakeup looks.

I have and love 1952, Romantique and Meloncholy. I also have a full size of Dragon’s Kiss, but its not a favorite. 1952 actually reminds me Mac Scarlet Ibis and Meloncholy reminds me of Mac Vegas Volt…of course I gravitate towards the same colors :).

I also have sample sizes of Ghost’s Kiss and Glamorous Rebel. GK was just not the right nude for me, Ive given up on finding a good nude shade. GR is a beautiful blue based red, it skews just a bit too blue for me, but I really liked it, just couldnt justify adding it to my arsenal of red’s. FYI, I ordered all Lustres in sample form first (which they arent offering at the moment) before buying full sized but I would totally buy more! I am considering Masala and Queer Theory but am waiting for sample sizes to be back in stock.

The formula is like nothing I have tried before, very moisturizing and long lasting. I really like them.

Is the Fyrinnae website down? It displays a blank black page regardless of whether I use IE or Firefox….very strange (and frustrating!). Is anyone else having this issue with Fyrinnae?

KK Avatar

I was in the process of shopping on the website and it started doing the same thing for me (Safari). Temptalia must have sent over more traffic than it could handle!

Sarah Avatar

These are so smouldery (but also bright) colors! I love the look you did with the three of them. Were they applied damp/over an eyeshadow base?

Liza Avatar

such pretty colors! Is their pixie epoxy like Lit Cosmetics Glitter Glue or more like Too Faced Glitter Glue? I haven’t tried this brand yet and just wondering if I should also get the epoxy or if one of those other two bases works the same?

zainab Avatar

I have to order some of these. I have been to their website loads of times and found ways to talk myself out of it, but these are awesome, and ‘Agenda’ and ‘Hitched’ were even more awesome. Do you have any plans to review their lip products or blushes?

sharee Avatar

I really want to order something but each time i leave a page to shop for something else, it empties my cart. Frustrated.

Bibi Avatar

I have been using some of their eyeshadows for years ( 7 years exactly), some eyeshadows I just like to swatch on my hand but I never dare to wear ( I am almost in my forties) , there are exception like the Rapunzel eyeshadow, the Polar Bear, Koala, snow leopard, kurisimasu, and some others that I forgot the name. This brand is a mystery for me, cheap products, great quality, rare combinations of colors and decent customer service, so even if you’re not into bright eyeshadows you may find some goodies, give it a try.

Kate Avatar

Hey Bibi! I am in my early 40’s and love to wear the bright colours, you should give it a go. Fyrinnae are so fun to play with and personally I think it is all about confidence not age. I bet you will look great!

Bibi Avatar

Thanks Kate! I’ll give it a try for big occasions but on a day to day basis, I have been sticking to my naked palette for the last 2 years!

Andrea Avatar

Stoked on more Fyrinnae swatches! Superstar is GORGEOUS.
(Also reminds me of Molly Shannon.. really need to watch that one again. xP )

Jenny Avatar

How did you apply this? I put the Pixie Epoxie on and then put the shadow on a brush and it came out really chunky and wouldn’t blend.

Do I need a mixing medium?
