I think it was Benefit’s Show-Offs – they were loose eyeshadows, sort of.

my grandmother let me pay her and i bought one of those enormous eyeshadow palettes from her mail order magazine haha. the first specific product i remember buying myself was a bottle of Revlon Street Wear in Gun Metal. I still have it.

Bare Minerals lip gloss in Wild Honey. I was 13 and it was my first time at Sephora. I still have a soft spot for that lip gloss. 🙂

yellowlantern Avatar

I’m 90% sure the first thing I bought for myself was a Naturistics lipgloss in a tin from the drugstore meant to smell like honey.

Wow, I just googled the brand and those ads are like stepping back into junior high.

The first thing from a department store I ever bought myself was a MAC lipglass in ‘Lust’.

A Christian Dior lipstick (Mohair) back in 1986 for $15. Loved that lipstick and it’s probably the only one I have ever finished. I can still remember how it smelled.

Hmmm, well, at first I bought through my mother from AVON or when I was out with her(I still buy with her money, but on my own, mostly)…..so the first product I bought by myself was a Maybelline Fresh concealer, I think 😀 (well, my dark circles are my main concern) It was very good….they stopped making it, tho.

I think I bought a discontinued Revlon lipstick one of their sheer ones lipstick+balm in a brown tube.. Cannot remember the name.. I went through three of them before they were discontinued.. and I haven’t found a better MLBB/Nude after that! It was a great loss 🙁

I bought my first products from helena rubenstein: One neon-orange sparkly loose eyeshadow, one neon green pressed eyeshadow, one foundation and a black eyeliner. It was in 2000 and I was 14 years old and had saved money from my first job, actually it was my first BIG purchase. My mom never wears make up so I didn’t have any help(which I could have needed e.g didn’t buy mascara!!!) but I loved the experience and since then i have loved buying and creating with make up:-)

I think it was (I’m dating myself here) a Maybelline Blooming Colors eyeshadow palette. The shades were blue, green, brown and this awful yellow ocher. I always wore all four colors at once, with no other makeup, gah! Well, live and learn, I guess!

starfish628 Avatar

Mine was also Maybelline Blooming colors. Light blue, light green, peach and I do not remember the last one. I thought I was so cool.

A MAC foundation and two Max Factor mascaras. Unfortunately the foundation made me feel itchy and yellow while I accidently ended up getting the same mascara twice for some reason (I wanted a brown and a black but got two blacks instead). I had to give one mascara away to my cousin instead. I think I got a pink eye shadow as well. I placed it all over my eye and it looked sooooooooo terrible in pics at a school party.

I remember being a young teenager in the mid 80s buying baby blue and seafoam green Cutex nail polishes. I also bought baby blue and seafoam green Wet n Wild lipsticks, because I loved the colours in theory, but I didn’t wear them very often.

Around the same time I remember buying eyeshadow and blush in pale lavender packaging, I think it was Maybelline’s (or another drugstore brand) line geared towards young people.

Veronica Avatar

It was probably concealer or mascara. My real gateway drug was red lipstick, though. It was a blue-based red from Sephora that I still own (and wear!). It started my obsession with bold lipstick. 🙂

CeliaV Avatar

I got mine on the same day the first time I was in New York at age seven. I saved up for a beautiful Betsey Johnson gold lipstick (I still have the tube around. Of course I don’t use it anymore but sentimental value) and a MAC pale gold e/s…but no idea which. I used them into the ground!

The first ever was N.Y.C. Roll-On Lip Gloss in Strawberry which I wore constantly as a child. The first high end product I ever bought as an adult was MUFE HD Foundation.

J Avatar

Pretty sure it was a physicians formula bronzer, the one w the half moon design. I was around 12-13 and was SUPER tan at the time so I thought it was a face powder! I was so annoyed by all the shimmer on my face, haha!! I had no idea what bronzer was then!

issy Avatar

A black eyeliner Pineaud or Pinaud……..because I had to go to a fancy dress party with schoolmates ( at 12 or 13). I think I still have it in some pencil case at my parents’.

Tangie Wimberly Avatar

Funny.. I can’t remember the first Drug store item but I can remember the first high end. We’ll drug store was no where near what it is now in my defense..!

Irene Avatar

Christine, I loved the Show Offs from Benefit! I had the peachy yellow with the pink iridescence.

The first makeup I ever purchased with my own money was probably a loose eye shadow from a booth at the mall. The color is comparable to Club from MAC or Label Whore from Too Faced but in loose form (basically a reddish brown with a blue sheen). Before that I had gone with my mom to a drugstore to buy an eyeshadow quad from Cover Girl but technically she bought it for me.

Nikki Avatar

Aside from rollerball lipgloss (remember those?!), I believe it was Clinique pressed powder. I didn’t start wearing “real” makeup until I was about 19 or 20, but I did wear lipgloss and pressed powder in high school.

Carla Avatar

Oh, sure, I remember the roller-ball lip glosses!
They were The Thing when I was in junior high.
My first one was strawberry-flavored, then I “branched out” to an orange-flavored one.
By the time I got to high school, I’d progressed to pot glosses.
What *was* that Yardley one?
Pot o’ Gloss?
And there was a L’Oreal one that I loved because it lasted and lasted. Friends were always trying to borrow it from me.

Stacey Avatar

Love those roller ball lipglosses.
Probably won’t sell them know that it is not recycle friendly.
All these bring back memories.
Buying makeup is an addiction.

Helene Avatar

It was a blood red lipstick when I was 10, perhaps. I didn’t pay for it, but I decided the colour. I wasn’t allowed to wear it out, though 🙂
First makeup I bought for by myself was Rimmel, a mascara in blue, I’m sure I applied in a very clumsy way, but I felt very grown up. Think I was 13.

Carla Avatar

It’s difficult to remember back that far – I *am* almost 50, after all.
But I vaguely remember when I was about 13, and had just begun wearing makeup.
I guess my mother got tired of me messing around in her makeup, though I *tried* to do it on the sly, because she took me to the drugstore to buy my own.
As I recall, that day, I got Maybelline mascara, Maybelline foundation, and a single eyeshadow (probably green, a shade I wouldn’t touch with the proverbial 10-foot pole today).
I think the first thing I ever bought independently, though, was a Bonne Bell Dr. Pepper Lipsmacker, which was actually an appropriate choice for a 13-year-old.
I could NEVER have imagined the wealth that my makeup future held! 🙂

Rebecca Avatar

Pretty sure Avon beauty products were my first as a gift from my mom at Christmas time since her friend was a rep, I remember there being matching rose gold lip gloss and nail polish. Still have the nail polish because it is so sentimental I cannot throw it out! I think I was 10 or 11. When I was young my mom always was the one who bought me my cosmetic items because we would share them, only thing I had for myself was my own mascara and brown eyeliner. I remember buying my own product at the drugstore when I was 13 and it was this really pretty iridescent pink Covergirl wetslicks lip gloss that smelled like mint! I remember buying it the day before school started when I was going into 8th grade and being so excited to start the school year with a pretty new lip gloss. I mainly used Avon products that my mom bought me so when I started buying drugstore items with my own savings it was a big deal for me!

Jan Kelley Avatar

I think it was an Elizabeth Arden cream eyeshadow (Gris brun) and a Maybelline black mascara. I can’t remember for sure but I think I also bought a Max Factor clear lip gloss stick. That was many years ago………..

Donna Avatar

Yardley (loved Yardley anything) Lavender Cream eye shadow. 1971 Guess I was always a bit “out there” but it was Northern California. Still love Lavender eye shadow. I actually wore a lavender cream eye shadow at my wedding in 1974

Brenda Avatar

The first beauty product I remember buying has to either be a Naturistics Grape lipbalm, maybe 1990 -ish, or a double ended eyeliner from The Body Shop, somewhere around 1992! I still think about those two items LOL!

Leticia Avatar

A Cover Girl pressed powder and a grayish blue eyeliner with a sponge tip to blend – I thought this sponge was the most genius idea! I also got a baby pink Maybelline cream blush with a matching lipstick that I loved so much because it made me feel like I was wearing the most high-end cosmetics out there!

Crystal Avatar

The first product I *remember* actually purchasing on my own was this heinous metallic copper lipstick from the drugstore when I was eleven. No idea what brand it was, but if I remember correctly it was some random no-name brand in a white tube. I went on a summer trip with my best friend to a campsite and wore it like, every single night while we were hanging out with the cool older kids. Thinking back, it was probably a pretty awesome grunge look for 1993!
The first decent product I ever bought was when I was about 21 working at a store that sold discounted drugstore makeup, so I naturally bought heaps of it. I got Tapestry Taupe eyeshadow by Cover Girl and wore it constantly.
My first high-end purchase was a 4-pan eyeshadow palette from Mac that was filled with Satin Taupe, Star Violet, Woodwinked, and Sumptuous Olive. All shadows I still love years later!

Bonnie Avatar

Maybelline The Falsies Black Drama. It was on sale and I grabbed it on a whim. Still got it. Not very hygienic is it? :p

Mari Avatar

I guess it was some eyeliner pencil from a drugstore brand (brown, before I started wearing black), or a roll-on clear gloss mint scented… or some avon metallic lipstick from the 90s.

Iliana Avatar

It was probably a Chap Stick lip balm (if lip balms count) OR Clean and Clear face powder. It was all the rage in school when I was in 6th grade. If not that, because I probably didn’t have money in 6th grade, then it would be a Wet N Wild bronzer that I loved but forgot the name, or Maybelline blush in Cinnamon. I tried looking for those two when I could afford makeup but failed miserably!

Jenni Avatar

Oh my first was Benefit Show-offs too! I loved those things! Especially the one that was a pink/gold that shifted colors depending on the light! It was so pretty!
