Estee Lauder Sumptuous Extreme Mascara
Sneak Peek: Estee Lauder Sumptuous Extreme Mascara
New for December, Estee Lauder’s Sumptuous Extreme Mascara ($23.50) promises to deliver a volumizing mascara that never clumps and “[makes] eyes look outrageously big and amazingly bold.” The brush even has its own name–Extreme BrushComber–which has a new shape that is said to hold more mascara, be easy to use and get to all your lashes in spite of its size. The formula has “Tri-blend Multiplying Fibers,” which include “Hollow Tube Fibers” for curl and length, “Solid Rod Fibers” for volume and length, and “Micro-Locking Fiber” for thickeness and length. Finally, it contains Lash-Advancing Vitamin Complex, which has Vitamin B5, designed to condition lashes and keep lashes flexible. It will be available in four shades: Extreme Black, Extreme Brown, Extreme Indigo, and Extreme Violet.
The brush itself is quite large–a full 1 3/4″ in length when I measured–but the way it narrows and tapers does make it easier to maneuver around the inner corners of eyes. I do find it more difficult to use it on lower lashes, just because it is so large, but I think users of Dior’s DiorShow won’t find it much larger. After using this mascara for a couple of weeks and alternating with other mascaras, I did feel like the brush itself was more helpful in defining lashes–just separating them as I was applying the mascara–than the average mascara wand.
My fringe definitely looked longer and fuller–it had a slightly feathery quality to it–but the richness of the black made the overall effect more dramatic. I was able to do several passes through my lashes without getting any clumping, and this is a mascara that you can easily do a second or third coat of, too, if desired. It doesn’t dry immediately (15-20 seconds), but it’s not so wet that you’ll have mascara residue underneath your eye if you blink. My lashes felt incredibly lightweight and soft–flexible and bendable. I was able to push and rub (gently!) against my lashes and didn’t experience any flaking either.
I was most impressed by the richness of the Extreme Black shade–deep dark black, very inky and solid. It’s definitely one of the blackest mascaras I’ve tried in recent memory. It volumizes nicely, and it gives enough thickness to my lashes to make them more noticeable, but it still feels like I’m wearing one of the lighterweight, more natural mascaras (think Maybelline Full ‘n Soft) but I get the effect of dramatic mascara. I experienced no flaking, smudging, budging, or other ill effects after twelve-hour wear.

RECOMMENDATION: If you have shorter, sparser lashes, Estee Lauder does double-duty with lengthening and volumizing. Oh, and if you have black lashes but still want them blacker? This will make them even darker!

thanks for your great reviews! please, could you recommend me a good eyelash curler? i live in spain, and because we haven’t all the brands you can find in the states, i’ve thought in mac or benefit curler.what do you think? gracias!
I like shu’s!
Sounds like a good mascara, but I don’t know…I was thinking about getting the Lash Queen mascara by Helena Rubistein..Have you ever tried it? :O
Nope, sorry!
Helena Rubistein isn’t available in the states, unfortunately.
It’s exactly the same as Armani Eyers To Kill (on me) if it’s any help.
I haven’t tried that one, but thnk u for the help! ^^
I truly liked this one. The brush seems to be perfect for my small eyes.
Wow! I can really see a difference in your lashes! This might be worth a try 😀
I love how the wand looks and I wouldn’t mind giving this a try!
I received a deluxe sample of this from Nordstrom awhile back and was impressed enough to buy a full size. I’ve been wearing it now for two months and the mascara has not dried out or thickened in the least. It still produces thicker, longer, slightly curved lashes that are feathery soft and well separated, although I always comb though mine once anyway just out of habit. I haven’t had any difficulty with the brush and I have deep-set eyes. The fact that it tapers towards the end makes it easy to get the lashes in the corners. It wears well throughout the day without the dreaded “raccoon-ing” or any flaking and yet, at the end of the day, it removes easily. All in all, it’s a big step up from drugstore brands but is priced lower than many department store brands.
ZOMG. I’m at work and I want it NOW.
Sometimes experiencing no flaking, smudging, budging, or other ill effects after twelve-hour wear… is what counts. There’s nothing worse than having raccoon eyes at the end of the day! 😉
Katie for Ouidad
You can actually see the difference! I will have to give this one a try. The only mascara that works for me is Guerlain but it is so expensive. For half the price, it’s worth a shot.
Ooh, i’ll definitely buy this when it hits our stores!
A colored mascara not in LE?! Hooray!!!
I looove Estee Lauder, I ‘m so glad you did a review of one fo their products.. I bought my first Sumptuous last year, and I was sold! It’s just so good! I doesn’t massively flake (or RUN!), even the normal version holds its own under water (the waterprood one is just indestructible)..I think it also is a good value for money, mine lasted about a year.
A definite HG product for me!
Ok I looove the original sumptuous and I’m excited to pick up my deluxe sample of this one!
I really don’t like this one. It makes your lashes look messy on the ends.
I picked this up last night and was anxious to try it out this a.m. BUT noooooo the sales person gave me INDIGO instead of black! Gotta go back to the store now during this holiday rush and i’m sure i will have troubles finding parking!
Lesson learned — Check your products before leaving the store
ooo did you try the indigo at least? i been wondering if the colored ones are as vibrant/pigmented as the LE ones from last year
How many coats of mascara did you use in the above swatches?
Two.
I’ve bought it for my mum but on me I don’t like it…I don’t know why but on me it look totally different!! I will try double wear mascara….have you?!
I haven’t!
Does the estee lauder sumptuous extreems have als or sls amongst the ingrediant (lauryl sulfate)
Looks good!
