Estee Lauder Brazen Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick ($30.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a muted, dark reddish-berry with subtle cool undertones and a light sheen. It had semi-opaque coverage that applied unevenly and tended to look patchy in places, while some color migrated into lip lines over time. This type of shade seems problematic across brands, and it’s rare to see a good formulation when there is any glossiness to it (and even still, some matte options don’t apply well). On me, it lasted for five hours and left a stain behind, but the color really settled into lip lines. The formula was moisturizing, though! ColourPop Paramour (LE, $5.00) is darker, matte. Marc Jacobs Beauty Blow (210) (P, $30.00) is warmer, matte. Tom Ford Beauty Wes (LE, $32.00) is lighter. MAC Runner (LE, $16.00) is matte. Bite Beauty Truffle (P, $24.00) is darker. Tom Ford Beauty Black Dahlia (10) (LE, $50.00) is matte. MAC Living Legend (LE, $16.00) is darker, more matte. NARS Liv (P, $32.00) is cooler-toned. MAC Lingering Kiss (LE, $16.00) is more matte. Kat Von D Motorhead (P, $21.00) is more matte. Bite Beauty Bordeaux (P, $28.00) is lighter. Maybelline Espresso Exposed (955) (P, $7.49) is warmer. MAC Talk That Talk (LE, $16.00) is matte. Urban Decay Shame (P, $22.00) is redder. MAC Heart Hangover (LE, $18.00) is cooler-toned. MAC Tribalist (LE, $16.00) is warmer. MAC Sin (P, $16.00) is more matte. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Black Dahlia (P, $18.00) is darker. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Estee Lauder Dangerous Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick ($30.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a muted, medium-dark brown with hints of warm, rosy red and a soft shine. It had mostly opaque coverage with a creamy, glide-on consistency that gave lips a smoother appearance. This shade wore well for five and a half hours on me and was hydrating over time. Chanel Jeanne (408) (P, $36.00) is darker. Guerlain Gaetane (16) (P, $51.00) is lighter, warmer. MAC Carnal Instinct (LE, $16.00) is more shimmery. MAC Legendary (LE, $16.00) is darker, more matte. MAC Sheer Plum (P, $16.00) is sheerer. Make Up For Ever #20 (P, $19.00) is more matte, brighter. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Estee Lauder Daring Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick ($30.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a brightened, medium orange with warm undertones and leans yellower (rather than red), and it had a soft shine. It was fully opaque with a rich, creamy texture that was easy to apply and looked smooth and even on the lips. The formula is comfortable to wear, long-wearing at five and a half hours, and hydrating over time. Maybelline Tangy Tulip (960) (LE, $7.49) is slightly darker, sheerer. MAC Forbidden Sunrise (LE, $16.00) is lighter, more matte. MAC Ravishingly Rich (P, $23.00) is more shimmery, darker. NARS Iberico (LE, $25.00) is darker, matte. NARS Geraldine (P, $32.00) is darker. Givenchy Corail Signature (317) (P, $36.00) is more muted. Illamasqua Soaked (P, $26.00) is slightly darker. NARS Timanfaya (P, $25.00) is darker, more matte. MAC Tart & Trendy (LE, $16.00) is more muted. Milani Sweet Nectar (P, $5.49) is slightly darker. Maybelline Electric Orange (P, $7.49) is slightly darker. MAC Fashion Nomad (LE, $16.00) is darker. MAC Sounds Like Noise (LE, $16.00) is lighter. MAC Morange (P, $16.00) is a smidgen darker. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

I am so in love with Daring! I need to sample it because I don’t know how it would look on me but it looks AMAHHHHZING on you!!!!!

I love my Marsala palette! Those are some of the best colors for me. Also the summer Tom Ford colors are perfect on my skin tone. I am a MAC NC37 in studio fix. How close are we in coloring, Christine? Also, I would like to put a photo of myself with my name like some of the other group members. How do I do that?

I am baffled by why so many brands have trouble making shades like Brazen. I wonder if it’s something with the pigment because I recall NARS Ingrid having similar issues.

C+?! Aw man! Challenge accepted! LOL! I JUST ordered Brazen two days ago! Haha! It’s the only one I don’t have and I’ve only ever been able to find it on esteelauder.com (I usually just pick things up in person at counters, I rarely order from the company on-line).

Perhaps over a liner… that’s the only way I can get MAC Lustre’s to not make my lips peel. They’re still drying on me but warn alone they’re torturous! Over a liner not so bad.

You know, I’m always so focused on the makeup that I often overlook how lovely your photography is, but that ultra close up of Brazen at the start of this post is really gorgeous just as a standalone image. Do you also take photos for fun outside of work, Christine?

But as for the makeup…. Daring is gorgeous! Is it just my monitor or is it just the subtlest tinge yellower than Electric Orange besides being lighter?

Christine Avatar

Only of Mellan, but I’m honestly not into photography much beyond trying to do what I can to take good, consistent (that’s my focus) photos for the blog!

It’s definitely a yellower orange than Electric Orange – not by a lot, but it is less red!

I actually really like all three colors, but $30 is too much to pay for Brazen with it being patchy. Well, for me, $30 is usually too much for me to pay for lipstick anyway, but I expect quality when I do.

Love, love, love that Dangerous lipstick – it is one of my favourite all-time Marsala coloured lipsticks. All the lipsticks look great on you Christine – but Dangerous is the best. Sad to say, it retails for $50 here in Australia – which makes it extremely expensive to spend on a lipstick……

For once I would *love* to see a permanent shade like Brazen to swatch the way it looks in the bullet… I actually got excited for a moment, then saw the swatch…

Ooh, Christine. That orange makes you absolutely glow! It looks like an orange you actually find in nature, like on marigolds. So beautiful.

Dangerous is so not something I would pick out for myself at the store, but seeing it on you has inspired me to branch out a bit!

Also I wish more super-dark lipsticks were true-to-tube; I get a little disappointed with so many that end up being way lighter than expected. Thanks for test-driving these for us!
