Do you leave reviews for products you've tried?
NO, NEVER!! Obviously, I write reviews for Temptalia. I very seldom leave reviews on retailer sites, though, but you know, I’m kind of dedicated to reviewing here so doing more seems unreasonable!

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Thank you for understanding!

Yes. But only for products I truly love. Or products that are really inferior. I like to offer dupes to a product in reviews. I usually get flagged for that. Looking at you Sephora and Nordstrom.
What does that mean, that you get flagged?
Meaning if I state that the product doesn’t live up to the hype or I offer up the name of a dupe that is a better value. I will get a comment from Sephora or Nordstrom stating my comment is offensive or doesn’t meet their criteria. Which I find disappointing. Especially if I purchase from their site and they send me an email asking for a review. Sephora is pretty blatantly cherry picking the content of what they want you to see.
I do sometimes! Usually not for a long time though. If I do, it’ll be going back through my Sephora/Beautylish/whatever purchases from months ago and leaving a review on something I’ve had for a good while. I’m not dedicated to it, though.
I do for SpaceNK. Well, you get points for reviews on your loyalty card. LOL
Clinique website also gives points for reviews. It’s an interesting approach, but it’s feasible for smaller websites only (I don’t think Ulta or Sephora will ever do something similar). On big retailer websites we have seen more than one time how the review system can be exploited by both users and brands.
No, but I should for products I love that fly under the radar (in my opinion). Occasionally if something is truly exceptional (lipstick that stays put and makes my lips look smooth) I will. I think it’s probably more helpful to review products that don’t have a lot of reviews, or support independent companies with smaller reach, but I’m far from consistent about it. I WILL review shoes more often because I have troublesome feet and feel like sharing when shoes work!
I do sometimes! I’ve done it when a product has few reviews or I disagree with the majority view. I have also done it when things were surprisingly good or bad.
Only if a product knocks my socks off, or is so awful I absolutely must shout my disdain far and wide.
Thank you. I appreciate your disdain. 🙏
Rarely. Only for the highest of highs when I’ve found some holy grail thing that I want to support in some misguided attempt to help keep it on shelves or the lowest of lows where a product is just so objectively bad and/or bordering on false advertising that I feel compelled to warn people so they don’t part with their money. Everything in between is pretty much just a matter of personal taste usually anyway. I certainly appreciate people who do review with more frequency and comment on performance (like if a highlighter is actually a glitter bomb and you would have never guessed it from photos), but don’t feel compelled to do it myself.
Only if I have very strong feelings about a product. It has to be a staple or the worst product ever.
Not anymore, put a bad review on a beauty product on Nordstrom and they took it down.
Bought a beauty product on EBay and got a used product so left a negative review after seller wouldn’t make it right. EBay took it down for them . I don’t bother
I try to but they need to send me reminders because I don’t always remember to do it lol! I think it’s important to try and leave a review so others know how a product or item works. I read reviews before I purchase things so I like to be helpful.
I don’t leave reviews on retailer websites. I frequently comment on products on various subReddits but I don’t usually offer a full blown review unless I am specifically asked, which does happen on the Pan Porn subReddit. Every now and then I go to Makeup Alley and leave a review there if it’s a product I think people need to know about.
I don’t know if I am knowledgeable enough about the way make up should work to leave a review. There seems to be some variability between what works for some but not for others based on their skin tone, type and technique. But I do enjoy reading the reviews here because there is just such a strong and comprehensive database.
Yes, I try my best to leave thorough reviews on the websites from which I purchase products. For make-up, I also try to remember to leave feedback on this website.
I don’t know how much it really counts, but I like detailed reviews, so I try to do my part.
Yes. For the most part products that go above and beyond my expectations, or items that are truly not worth it IMO, for price or quality.
Yes, like the majority I usually write a review only when the product is really good or really bad!
Only at either extreme.
Ocasionally but pretty much only when I find most of the reviews (which led me to buy sth) seriously detached from reality! ahah! If most of the reviews say pink but it’s actually blue I’ll complain but I find that most online stores won’t actually post very negative reviews (no matter what they’re selling). Once in a blue moon I’ll come across sth I find amazing and then I might be tempted to review.
Temptalia is a “professional” website so you can post a “professional” opinion without worry, but a lot of the websites out there, I wouldn’t trust blindly. I never buy anything anymore when pretty much all the reviews are super positive, when they’re all posted around the same time and when they all “say the same”, using the same exact words.
BTW on the topic of reviews: during the VERY long first lockdown I kept myself entertained by (obsessively) looking at lipstick on Temptalia! Bought a bunch of them, which I happily still wear under my mask ahah!, and I’m proud to report your reviews were very accurate. Colour is sth so subjective (yet essential!) and I really love the way you speak of it in such an objective way and which for me just works. On this note, I think you changed the “light” on your pictures and it’s harder for me to tell whether I like a particular shade or not because the light is too good… Sorry about that!
Agree, Andrea. Alas, everything looks great on Christine.
I have! But usually only if I absolutely hate a product. LOL. For instance; I sure did leave one for Too Faced Chocolate Bar palette. Went into full description of what their having sodium saccharine in it did to my poor eyeballs. Some thanked me for letting them know as they themselves had Sulfa allergies. Then, Too Faced ERASED my review! 🤬
But, I’ve left a few more pleasant reviews for other products I’ve bought over the years. Not many, though.
Yes, if I have the time and remember. I feel like I used to be better about it.
Yes, frequently I do. I try to use your reviews as examples of what to say.
I have only written a few for beautyheaven – an online review site here in Aus., but generally no I don’t. Only here do I leave comments and that’s before I have tried any of the products.
But I don’t leave reviews on retailers’ websites because you have to enter your email address and I don’t want to be inundated with emails from the retailer(s).
If I either strongly like/am excited about a product OR if it has all good reviews but I didn’t like it and want to give my 2 cents.
Sometimes, depending on how good or bad it is.
Rarely.
I have but very few. I do sometime for clothes, after some washes as most people seem to review after just putting whatever it might be on. I like to know how clothes looks after at least three washes. Often I forget, unfortunately.
Sometimes but not most of the times. I find that if I really like a brand, I feel motivated to leave reviews for their products, especially. the stuff I love. At the same time for these brands, I will also leave reviews or products that I had issues with – to sort of warn others of these- because I know I would want to know these things. I try to be fair on any criticisms I make b because generally I like these band I am leaving a review for.
Sometimes. But retailers (Sephora seems like one of the biggest offenders of this) sometimes won’t publish my reviews if they’re not 4 or 5 stars. And like another reviewer mentioned, if I mention another product as similar or better then my review never sees the light of day. For this reason I know retailer reviews are worth very little (doesn’t stop influencer from send eleventy billion free products to beef up the # of reviews a products gets though.)
Very rarely. I really feel like I should do it more to help cancel out the dingbat reviews (you know the ones. crystal woo people making wild claims and baseless accusations that have no foothold in science or reality at all).
Yes, but only when the product is really good or really bad.
