Dior Poncho (559) Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches
Poncho (559)
Dior Poncho (559) 5 Couleurs Couture Eyeshadow Palette ($65.00 for 0.24 oz.) is a new, warmer neutral color story that had four shimmery shades paired with one matte shade. The performance of this palette wasn’t on par with several of the others I tried, partially because one shade (the second) was more sparkly (and sheerer) but the matte shade in this palette was a bit powdery and sheerer. It certainly wasn’t bad, but it didn’t quite reach the heights of others in the line.

Poncho #1
Poncho #1 is a brighter, light copper with moderate, warm undertones and a metallic sheen. The texture was soft, smooth, and dense without being so firm that it became stiff to work with, which ensured I had no trouble picking up product and depositing it on my lid.
It had opaque pigmentation that lasted nicely for eight and a half hours before fading visibly.

Formula Overview
-
The formula is supposed to have a "creamy and comfortable texture" that is long-wearing and has "intense color" (or "high-pigment"). There are five finishes that can be found within various palettes: matte, satin, shimmer, metallic, highlighter, and glitter, though there aren't specific descriptions by finish, unfortunately.
There were a few shades that seemed more sparkly and were sheerer, more like layering shades, while the other finishes tended to be pigmented. In general, the texture was moderately dense with the matte shades being slightly thinner and a smidgen powdery in the pan compared to the satin, shimmer, and metallic shades.
Aside from those more sparkly shades, the formula was blendable, pigmented, easy to work with, and lasted an average of eight hours on me (without a primer).

Poncho #2
Poncho #2 is a light-medium, peachy gold with strong, warm undertones and a sparkling finish. It had medium coverage with less of a base color and more as a result of a moderate amount of sparkles throughout.
The texture was slightly creamier, so it wasn’t as hard to work with as fallout wasn’t a major issue, but it did apply best with a dampened brush or a fingertip. It wore decently for seven hours but had light fallout over time.

Poncho #3 is a very light, golden brown with strong, warm undertones and a pearly sheen. It had good color coverage in a single layer, which could be built up to full coverage with less than half of a layer on top.
The texture was soft, blendable, and a smidgen powdery in the pan but wasn’t prone to fallout during application. This shade stayed on nicely for eight hours before fading noticeably.

Poncho #4
Poncho #4 is a medium, golden brown with strong, warm undertones and a pearly sheen. The eyeshadow had excellent pigmentation in a single layer, which adhered well to bare skin and diffused easily along the edges without losing the shadow’s intensity.
The consistency was smooth, lightly creamy, and dense but not stiff or overly firm. It lasted well for eight and a half hours before showing signs of fading.

Not horrible, yet not exactly exciting or unique, either. It’s rather “blah” for me. Oh well, not everything is going to move me one way or the other!
I agree Nancy this is probably the least interesting quint in the new range.
I find it surprising how these low contrast palettes give such good looks. Although this one is the best, I will not automatically avoid these anymore.
I really like this quint too – but I would want shades 1, 3 and 4 of yesterday’s Soft Cashmere and Shades 1 and 4 of today’s….. It’s interesting that shades 2 of both quints are the dicey ones. All in all, I love these soft neutral palettes as a foil to all the bright reds, oranges and pinks we have been seeing lately.
A lovely eye look too Christine.
Have you ever considered “Overall Value” of a product to be a factor in its final grade? It would be great to know if it’s worth it to purchase a clearly overpriced product such as this one, especially when nowadays there is a plethora of high performing, easily available, much more affordable cosmetics.
I appreciate all your hard work and love that you provide dupes at different price points! Thank you!
Hi Claudia,
Worth is very personal! Worth is extremely subjective because it really does come down to 1) what you already have, 2) what you are expecting from the product (regardless of what it is marketed as, e.g. you might prefer a sheerer formula even if it’s intended to be pigmented), 3) what your budget/discretionary income looks like (someone who spends $50 every few days on makeup might have a much different threshold of what’s “worth it” compared to someone who only spends $50 a year), and 4) your general shopping preferences – some refuse to purchase cheaper brands and really believe they only get good products from luxury brands and on the flip side, that nothing a luxury brand does it ever worth it.
With the Glossover, the rating has nothing to do with price or value, so you can compare a $5 eyeshadow to a $55 eyeshadow and know it’s not “good for the price” but good, period.
Nice, but as others noted, not a lot of contrast among some of the shades. Still very eye catching and “autumn” looking and the eye look you did, Christine, makes it even more appealing.
