Dior Merveille Vernis Nail Lacquer

Dior Merveille (651) Vernis Nail Lacquer ($22.00 for 0.33 fl. oz.) looks like a fiery orange-red in the bottle, but it turns out a little less fiery and more coral-orange on the nails. Nubar Pink Flame is closer to the shade I expected from the way Merveille looked in the bottle (it appears redder on the nails than Merveille). There is faint golden-copper shimmer, but it doesn’t show up much in natural light–only in really bright lighting does it arrive (fashionably late) to the party.

I was also surprised that this wasn’t opaque after two coats–it seems like such a rich shade, but there is a hint of visible nail line after two coats. Even though the flow was even and fluid, it just didn’t provide as much color coverage as a polish should, especially this kind of a shade! This shade was a little thinner than others but didn’t seem watery when I was applying–but by the underlying translucency, it might be a touch watery. I do typically get a week of wear with only minor tip wear with Dior’s formula.

I find it fascinating how Dior manages to make the polish look so different on the nail. I have a few of their polishes which look fantastic in the bottle but disappoint when applied.

The Dior nail colors you’ve recently reviewed have me under-whelmed. They’re not at all what they appear in the bottle! The true colors for both this and Exquis are disappointing.

You gave this polish a B, yet you gave the atrocious Couture Golds palette a B+? Christine, I’m starting to worry your judgement is clouding. (I totally kid. I agree with you most of the time.) I actually love this nail polish and have been wearing it nonstop even though it’s not the most unique shade. Like Christine, I don’t really see the shimmer until light strikes, but I find it kind of leaves the nails with a bit of a metallic sheen — pretty cool. However, I disagree about the opacity of this formula. It goes on opaque for me in one coat, although I prefer it with two. It also looks much more red on me (more like the Nubar Pink Flame), but that could be because I have a cooler skin tone.

Oh pretty! I really need a color like this for the holidays. My skintone is warm and this kind of orangey red looks so much better on me than straight red. I think I’ll pick this one up, thank you for the swatch!

while it still swatches on pretty nicely, i was hoping for a deeper red, like in the bottle. that being said, this is something i can definitely wear since i’m more warm-toned.

This is the first review I read that says Merveille took a bunch of coats to become opaque. Most say 2 and a few say it was nice in 1 coat. Is it possible that as a press sample you received a dud? Idk if they’re any different from what the stores sell. I’ll definitely make the trek to the store to see for myself, but I want to be as well-informed as possible if I’m gonna shell out $22 bucks on nail candy! lol

I think the color is beautiful. Having said this, I would never, apart from the most special of occasions, spend this kind of $ on a nail polish … but if I won the lottery. 😉

The Merveille red looks divine on you, Christine! I would have got this if I hadn’t already bought my red Christmas polish (“Rouge Carat” – Chanel). Thanks for the beautiful swatches, as always.
