Dior Eclectic (766) Eyeshadow Palette

Dior Eclectic (766) Eyeshadow Palette ($63.00 for 0.21 oz.) is a muted, smoky set of shades ranging from a pinky-beige to deep purple. I loved the color combination put together here, as using the blackened green made for an interesting time, but the quality just isn’t there. I wish the eyeshadows were softer and less dry, even if they were sheerer, but the thinner, dusty texture made for a lot of extra work to really blend and diffuse the eyeshadows on the lid.

Eclectic #1 a medium-dark eggplant purple with subtle, warm undertones and a mostly matte finish. There’s a dusting of fine shimmer on it, but it’s really hard to see applied. It had semi-sheer to semi-opaque coverage with a really dusty consistency that made for tougher application and blending. It wore for seven and a half hours before fading. Too Faced Delectable (PiP, $16.00) is darker, warmer (95% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty The Free Spirit No. 16 (LE, ) is lighter (95% similar). Hourglass Exposure #2 (PiP, ) is darker (90% similar). Tarte Mulled Wine (LE, ) is darker (90% similar). Guerlain Boulevard du Montparnasse #6 (LE, ) is darker (90% similar). KVD Beauty Worship (LE, ) is more shimmery (90% similar). Viseart Beaujolais (Dark Matte #6) (PiP, ) is warmer (90% similar). ColourPop Silver Lining (P, $4.50) is lighter (90% similar). Chanel Delicatesse #4 (LE, ) is more shimmery, warmer (85% similar). Sydney Grace Redeemed (DC, $5.25) is less shimmery, cooler (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Eclectic #2 is a sofot, light pinky-beige with warm undertones and a pearly sheen. It had semi-opaque pigmentation with a thin, dusty texture but applied well, even though it only lasted for seven hours on me. MAC Call Me Bubbles (LE, $17.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). KVD Beauty Moz (LE, ) is less shimmery (95% similar). MAC Pretty (LE, $17.00) is lighter (95% similar). ColourPop Cop-a-Feel (LE, $6.00) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). LORAC Soft Plum (LE, $19.00) is darker (90% similar). Dior Exuberante #2 (LE, ) is less shimmery (90% similar). Laura Mercier Vanilla Kiss (LE, $23.00) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). Too Faced Smitten (PiP, ) is darker, cooler (90% similar). Chanel Sensation (102) (LE, $29.50) is darker (90% similar). KVD Beauty Lucius (PiP, ) is lighter (90% similar). Cle de Peau Marmalade Sky #1 (PiP, ) is darker (85% similar). MAC Nubile (DC, $18.00) is darker (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Eclectic #3 is a brightened, light silver with a frosted sheen. It had good pigmentation with a soft, smooth consistency that didn’t get powdery or too dense to work with. There is an overspray, so it appears more metallic in the pan or if swatched without removing the overspray (I always take a brush to the surface and get rid of any oversprays first before swatching). It stayed on well for seven and a half hours. Viseart Sterling (PiP, ) is brighter (95% similar). Make Up For Ever ME202 Iceberg Blue (DC, $21.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). KVD Beauty Holy Bible (DC, ) is less shimmery (95% similar). Inglot #447 (P, $7.00) is brighter (90% similar). NARS Banquise (P, $19.00) is more shimmery, lighter, warmer (90% similar). Guerlain Les Aquas #4 (P, ) is darker, cooler (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Starry Night #1 (PiP, ) is darker, more muted (90% similar). Sephora + Pantone Universe Oyster Mushroom (LE, ) is darker, more muted (90% similar). theBalm #34 (P, $6.50) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). Sleek MakeUP Pretty in Paris (LE, $9.99) is darker (90% similar). Guerlain Crazy Paris #3 (LE, ) is more muted (90% similar). Dior Volcanic #2 (LE, ) is less shimmery, darker, warmer (90% similar). Clarins Midnight #1 (PiP, ) is less shimmery, cooler (90% similar). Ciate Platinum (LE, ) is darker (90% similar). Disney by Sephora Your Voice (LE, ) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). Dior Moonlight #2 (LE, ) is darker, warmer (85% similar). NARS Silver Screen #3 (PiP, $19.00) is more shimmery, darker (85% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Eclectic #4 is a deepened–but muted–green with fine green shimmer over a mostly matte finish. Applied, it looks mostly matte as the shimmer doesn’t seem to bind with the base product. It had good pigmentation and blended out fairly well while lasting for eight hours. LORAC Black Ivy (LE, $19.00) is lighter (95% similar). LORAC Forest (LE, $19.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). theBalm #3 (P, $6.50) is lighter (95% similar). Makeup Geek Envy (DC, $6.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). Chanel L'Intemporel de Chanel #2 (LE, ) is lighter (90% similar). Too Faced Punk (PiP, $16.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). NARS Snake Eyes (P, $25.00) is more shimmery, darker (85% similar). MAC Eat, Love (LE, $17.00) is darker (85% similar). Chanel Tisse Venitien #4 (PiP, ) is more shimmery, warmer (85% similar). bareMinerals Utopia (P, ) is darker, warmer (85% similar). NARS Shade V (LE, $25.00) is warmer (85% similar). Giorgio Armani Emeraude (04) (DC, $39.00) is more shimmery, lighter (85% similar). Viseart Dark Matte #11 (PiP, ) is lighter (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Eclectic #5 is a blackened purple with subtle, warm undertones and a satin finish. It had semi-sheer color payoff with a dry, dusty consistency that made blending more difficult as the color would look patchy and uneven. It wore well for seven and a half hours on me. Chanel Oiseaux de Nuit #3 (LE, ) is warmer (95% similar). Too Faced Huckleberry (LE, $16.00) is darker (95% similar). bareMinerals Center Stage (PiP, ) is cooler (95% similar). Too Faced Jungle Love (LE, $16.00) is more shimmery, lighter, brighter (95% similar). Too Faced Meow! (LE, $16.00) is more shimmery, lighter (95% similar). NYX Late Night Lingerie (P, $4.50) is lighter (90% similar). Tarte Glamorous (LE, ) is brighter (90% similar). Chanel Tisse Beverly Hills #4 (PiP, ) is darker, cooler (90% similar). …someone, please explain to me why I like these reviews. 😛 I don’t know what it is, but I almost feel so satisfied when I see that you’ve reviewed another of these palettes, Christine, and found them wanting. Just one question though: I know that you’ve had trouble with them in the past and that they seem to continually disappoint but, please tell me: you ARE able to return them…right? :-S I’d hate to think that you’re putting yourself through this if you’re not able to recoup on your investment each time.

As I was reading this review and saw how poorly the purples performed, I just felt like shaking my fist at Dior and screaming “WHY!?!” ….,but then I also read the dupe lists for both, and realized I already have plenty of dupes for both purples, especially that 5th shade, LoL!

Glad you got this as a press sample and didn’t buy with your own money. The only one that looks decent to me is the silver white one, but it’s been duped a million times. The others look like mediocre drugstore shadows.

Sadly, “poor showing” seems to be the default setting for Dior’s eyeshadows across the board. Truly, I can think of way more really bad ones (not even just mediocre but really disappointing) than really good ones!

Again, messing up the shade that makes the whole palette unique in the first place =/. I’m starting to lose faith in Dior. They pulled ahead to being my go-to brand around the time they came out with their fusion mono cream singles, I remember you liking them too, but it feels like it’s been a steady decline ever since.

I don’t really like this palette – the two burgundy/purples look too similar to me and I don’t wear these colours. Even the green (which I normally love) is too blackened for me. Plus it has a dismal rating. I don’t know why Dior is coming out with such bad products lately. A big disappointment.

De-pressing! I’ve always coveted one of these Dior eye palettes, and this might have been The One because of the wonderful color combo. Unfortunately, I was a v late bloomer with beauty products and just don’t have the skill/experience to overcome application issues.

As always, I’m so grateful for YOUR experience and know-how!

I knew it! I knew the second I saw those beautiful colours it was going to be a fail. Dior loves to do this. I would buy that in a second if it was any good.

Helene Avatar

Would you believe me if I tall you I have had really, really good, pigmented purpely eyeshadows from Dior. It was a very long time ago, so I suspect they had some harmful ingredient or so in them 😀
This palette looks good, as long as the shadows stays in the palette.
I feel sad when I see such, at least for me, decline when it comes to quality. Dior, what are you thinking?

beka Avatar

i usually don’t like purples on me, but i love how you paired them with blue eyeliner! i might have to try that (not with this palette though-ouch).

Dior quints are so hit or miss these past few years! I had purchased “Green Design” a few years ago and had to return it as it had poor color application, very dry and difficult to blend. I did purchase “Bar” earlier this year and really love it, no problems with application or wear. Also, “Bonne Etoile” is beautiful with a great formula as well. Can’t understand the inconsistency with their manufacturing. At least the brand’s mascara is consistently wonderful, and their mascara primer (Maximizer, I think it is called) is the best in the world. But I won’t buy their quints anymore without going to the Dior counter, applying it myself and evaluating it for the rest of the day before purchasing. Too bad, this will be a pass for me.
