Dior Capital of Light (806) Eyeshadow Palette
Dior Capital of Light (806) Eyeshadow Palette ($63.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a new, limited edition five-pan palette for fall. It features a blackened brown, light beige, pink, light brown, and dark plum with varying degrees of shimmer–satin to frost. For a Dior palette, it was better than anticipated, though it isn’t excellent, so I imagine for some the quality at this price point doesn’t make a compelling case. The five shades worked well together, and I can see several looks from this set of shades.
Capital of Light #1 is a dark, blackened brown with gold shimmer that gives it a soft, frosted finish. It had good color payoff with a slightly dry texture, but it applied without too much trouble. The color lasted for seven hours on me before fading noticeably. Tom Ford Beauty Spring 2015 (LE, $45.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Make Up For Ever D326 Black Bronze (DC, $21.00) is darker (90% similar). Too Faced Tempting (PiP, $16.00) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). theBalm Sophisticated (P, $16.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). Charlotte Tilbury The Huntress (LE, ) is lighter, cooler (85% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty The Parisienne #6 (LE, ) is darker, warmer (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Capital of Light #2 is a very light beige with neutral-to-cool undertones and a frosted shimmer. It had good pigmentation that applied evenly and was easy to blend out on bare skin. It lasted for seven and a half hours on me. LORAC Vanilla (LE, $19.00) is more pigmented, warmer (95% similar). Tarina Tarantino Delightful #1 (DC, ) is less shimmery (90% similar). MAC Chott (LE, $17.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). theBalm #22 (P, $6.50) is brighter (90% similar). Bobbi Brown Sea Glass (LE, $21.00) is darker (90% similar). NARS Galice (P, $28.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Emerald Lust #1 (LE, ) is more shimmery, darker (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Capital of Light #3 is a medium pink with warm undertones and a satin sheen. The pigmentation was mostly opaque, while the texture was fairly smooth, a little dry but blendable overall. This shade started to fade noticeably after seven hours of wear. Chanel Tisse Cambon #3 (PiP, ) is more shimmery (95% similar). Make Up For Ever I808 English Pink (P, $17.00) is more shimmery (95% similar). Sephora Peach (New Nudes) (PiP, ) is less shimmery, lighter (95% similar). Wet 'n' Wild Sweet as Candy #4 (PiP, ) is lighter (95% similar). Dior Sugar Shade #4 (LE, ) is lighter, warmer (95% similar). ColourPop Bubbly (LE, $6.00) is lighter (95% similar). MAC Da Bling (DC, $17.00) is more shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Urban Decay Alien (LE, $19.00) is cooler (90% similar). BH Cosmetics Club Tropicana #21 (LE, ) is more shimmery (90% similar). MAC Pink Venus (P, $17.00) is less shimmery, warmer (90% similar). Makeup Geek Pink of Me (DC, $6.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). Guerlain Majestic Rose #4 (PiP, ) is less shimmery, warmer (90% similar). Too Faced Sweetie Pie (PiP, ) is more shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty The Enigma #4 (PiP, ) is darker, warmer (90% similar). LORAC Bloody Mary (LE, $19.00) is less shimmery, lighter, warmer (90% similar). MAC In Living Pink (P, $17.00) is more shimmery, warmer (90% similar). Make Up For Ever I808 English Pink (DC, $21.00) is less shimmery, darker (85% similar). ColourPop Six in the City (LE, $6.00) is cooler (85% similar). Cle de Peau Calm (Left) (PiP, ) is more muted, warmer (85% similar). NARS Super Orgasm (LE, ) is less shimmery, lighter, cooler (85% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Capital of Light #4 is a light-medium golden brown with warm undertones and a soft, frosted sheen. The consistency was soft, smooth, and blendable on the skin, while it delivered opaque color payoff. In practice, this was the easiest and best shade in the palette. On me, it wore well for seven and a half hours. theBalm Stand-offish (P, $16.00) is darker (95% similar). Anastasia Yacht (LE, $12.00) is less shimmery, darker, warmer (85% similar). Tarte Dancer & Prancer (LE, ) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). Viseart Gitte (PiP, ) is darker (90% similar). NARS Dione (P, $29.00) is more shimmery, darker (90% similar). Gucci Beauty Starlight (DC, $37.00) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). Smashbox Doe (PiP, ) is less shimmery, darker (85% similar). Laura Mercier Topaz (PiP, ) is darker (85% similar). Rouge Bunny Rouge Bohemian Waxwing (P, $19.00) is darker, cooler (85% similar). theBalm Tubular (LE, $16.00) is darker (85% similar). MAC Crushed Clove (PiP, $17.00) is darker (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Capital of Light #5 is a dark plum with subtle, warm undertones and a satin sheen. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that applied fairly evenly, but it wasn’t the easiest shade to blend out or diffuse the edges of as the texture was slightly dry. KVD Beauty Worship (LE, ) is darker, cooler (95% similar). Make Up For Ever S832 Ash Plum (DC, $21.00) is warmer (95% similar). Le Metier de Beaute Fig (P, $30.00) is darker (90% similar). Chanel Delicatesse #4 (LE, ) is less shimmery, warmer (90% similar). Makeup Geek Sensuous (DC, $6.00) is warmer (90% similar). Tarte Show Plum Love (LE, ) is more pigmented, warmer (90% similar). Too Faced Pop (PiP, $16.00) is warmer (90% similar). MAC Mauve Over (LE, $17.00) is lighter (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Seductive Rose #4 (PiP, ) is warmer (90% similar). theBalm Curvy Cami (P, $16.00) is warmer (90% similar). Sephora Girlish Appeal (LE, ) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). Cle de Peau Golden Lace #1 (LE, ) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Make Up For Ever I834 Grape (DC, $21.00) is darker (90% similar). Dior Capital of Light (806) Eyeshadow Palette | Full Breakdown
I love this palette out of all the Dior palettes from this year! I am definitely biased towards more fall, plummy colours though.
They seem to do well for fall, moreso than summer!
Looks gorgeous on you. This is one in which you’d hate to see the pattern disappear. It’s so reminiscent of the ‘fretwork’ on la Tour Eiffel! Maybe it’s right for Linda……
Thank you, KJH!
Stunning to look at! <3
True!
Holy molee!! I almost fell out of my chair when I saw the B+ rating on a Dior quint. I haven’t seen a decent performing Dior quint in YEARS ! Ever since they reformulated their shadows and issued those horrible new quints. I was so happy to hear that Peter Philips had taken over creative direction for Dior this year and was fiddling with the formula. I saw online swatches for this quint and was cautiously optimistic, but this has exceeded my expectations! Then again my expectations were so low to begin with hahaha. But seriously, I LOVE the Paris theme, the Eiffel Tower embossing, and the sophisticated and unsual color combo here. I think I’m going to have to get this
Haha! It has been awhile!
I have it and I really love it. So pretty to look at, hated to touch it. #1 is my favorite followed closely by #5. As always, I love the look you did. Between this and the Chanel Les 4 Ombres Le Rouge Collection I’m all set for Fall.
So glad you’re loving yours, Lorrie!
The design on this one is so stunning, I haven’t been able to touch mine! I’m happy to see a decent score on a Dior quint from you though. Just a few more steps forward and hopefully they’ll get it totally right for the price.
I hope you can use yours soon!
The colour combination and the design on this are absolutely stunning! I love your eye makeup on this palette!!
Thanks a lot, Stephanie!
There’s something about Dior quints I just don’t like. In fact, I haven’t been inspired by them since Iridescent Leather, the only one I have.
Most of them aren’t impressive, so you’re not missing out at all!
I purchased this about 2 weeks ago and have really been loving it. I do have to work with a couple of the shades but overall I have not had difficulty with them and have achieved some stunning looks. I am going to try to re-create your beautiful look tomorrow. Thank you for all you do, Christine.
Happy to hear you’re enjoying yours, Deborah! What’s been your fave combo?
I like this a lot, the colours are right up my street, and I only have one dupe, for the pink shade. I am surprised there aren’t more dupes for the first and second shades.
Only one dupe! Wow! 🙂
Really nice colour combo going on with this palette and I love your eye look. Pretty confident I can dupe it out, but I likes!
I’m more than sure you can dupe it 😉
Only 0.12 oz?! They used to offer twice as much product in the same packaging! What a rip off.
It’s a different type of formula – this type (across all brands) is typically lighter in weight, even though they will fill up the same (or more) in terms of volume.
temptalia do you happen to know if the mono shadows in this collection is available in the US or is it international only?? I can’t find any info anywhere but i see the pictures 🙁
They’re right on Dior’s website? I’m not sure if there’s a specific shade – but I see plenty of monos sold through on Dior’s website!
Oh thank you I didn’t even think to check there ? I was only looking at The department store websites
I love the eye look you created.
Thank you, Maria!
Do i need it, no.
Is the quality enough good, no.
But I don’t have any Dior eyeshadow quad until now due to their quality issues.
This is the 1st time that i really like a Dior quad’s color story !
B+ isn’t a bad rate. But if it was other colors and other design, I may not be interested.
So honestly I’m sold by the look of it more than the quality of the product. I’m surprised by myself cause I passed easily on the Chanel lace highlighter (some years ago) knowing that I would never use it, to not ruin the design.
This Effel design and colors are just sooo pretty !
If you’re not sold on the quality, I would skip!
Oh, this looks so pretty (and I’m not someone who even likes pink eyeshadows!).
It is a nice set of shades!
That’s a pretty palette. It looks like you’re standing underneath the Eiffel Tower looking up! Nice to see a Dior quint get a better review, and comprised of a nice mix of cool, neutral & warm tones.
That’s very kind of you to say, Pami! 🙂
The colors and your look are pretty. I could probably come close with colors I already have though.
Thanks, Susan!
I agree, that for this price point I personally wouldn’t go running after this unless it scored a grade A. Plus, this one has very easily duped shades. Will say, however, that you were able to get a stunning eye look from it at least!
Thank you, Nancy!
Beautiful look and such high praise for a Dior palette, you ok, Christine Lolz? I always love their attention to detail with the stamping and such on the powders, it might be an option.
I only review it as it performs 🙂
Thanks for this! Are you planning to review 506 Parisian Sky?
No problem, Justine!
Wow, a palette from Dior that rates high? I like it too- even tho I’m not big on palettes I’m gonna go for this plus the new Chanel. You did a very pretty, ok for work look that convinced me that maybe I can pull this off. Thanks Christine!
Thank you, Trish!
Very pretty! I love that embossing. I’d hate to use the shadows and mess it up.
Awww!
I actually really love how those apply to the lid!
Awesome to hear!
Surprise, surprise – this actually looks like a reasonable palette from Dior. Even though they are not my colours, they are really pretty and I do love the first shade.
Gorgeous eye look Christine.
Thanks so much, Genevieve!
Christine,
Here is something I have been wondering about for a long time I just never thought of asking you directly. I see you wear so many different and unusual colors of makeup for your blog. There are colors that at my age of 53, I could never in a million years pull off, such as grass green or highlighter yellow. I applaud women that can.
If you are left to your own devices what color lipstick, eyeliner and eye shadows do you prefer to wear when not modeling for your blog?
Thanks in advance if you do respond,
I really like the majority of colors and shades – there are only a handful of colors that I don’t like on me, and the only one that really comes to mind is mustard – I find it looks very sickly on me! I could never be a minimalist for that very reason: I love variety. I love wearing bright blue as much as I love wearing taupe. The major difference if I wasn’t blogging is that I’d be doing more cohesive looks – e.g. while pale pink isn’t my best color, I do like how it looks with a much heavier, smokier eye!
Very cool. Thanks for a very in depth reply. Appreciate it.
By constantly reading your blog I have purchased some items or colors that I never thought I would purchase left to my own devices. I have seen some incredible colors in cosmetics over the past several years. Now if I could turn the clock back about 30 years I would be in business. Lol
I loved the purple and taupe-y shades in this one but that pink, it’s just not a color I wear – it did work really well in your eye look though – so I went for the other palette, Parisian Sky. I can’t wait to see what you do with that one, because I don’t know how to use the gray shade!
I’ve been really torn about this… it’s *so* beautiful to look at, but for $60 and some odd dollars the colors aren’t all that original…
I eventually decided to hold off because I was intrigued by some of the new singles Dior has launched… any idea if those are coming out to Nordstrom or Macys, Christine? they are on the Dior website but I haven’t seen them listed anywhere I could physically take a look… anyway, ugh that’s a beautiful palette. I was *almost* sold enough to buy it just for looks and then never ever touch it to ruin the embossing! 🙂
This pallete is gorgeous, both in color and design. I’d almost hate to disrupt it with use! I don’t know if I will buy, but I do like that beautiful, fall-appropriate plum.
So pretty. I could see me getting a lot of use out of this combo of shades. Of course, that means that I already have dupes, lol.
It’s been awhile since I’ve been tempted by a Dior quint but this one is really calling to me 🙂 The colours are all gorgeous; #3 could even been worn as a blush, I think, although it would be tricky getting a blush brush in that small pan. The Eiffel Tower pattern is so, so pretty too 🙂 I am really going to have to do a serious stash purge soon to make room for all the new fall makeup I’m buying…..#obsessed
It’s beautiful indeed. But I kind of wouldn’t use it because of the delicate surface design. Love your eye makeup Christine.
Beautiful look, Chrisstine!
A good Dior quint! Wow! It’s been a long time.
I love #1, I don’t have anything like it, I also like the pink. I don’t think I’ll get this but one can never be sure 🙂
When’s the last time a Dior palette made it to a B+ grade?? I’m shocked but hey, well done Dior!
I enjoy Dior palettes typically, and was about to order one of these, and then I saw the the ounces on this palette…. .12?? I thought at first it was a typo because their typical palettes are .21 but no, it’s almost half what the quints have been previously, at the same price point. Is the formulation different or something? This really bums me out. 🙁 Not going to pay the same amount of money for half the product, no matter how pretty the palettes are. I’ll get one of the LE lippies from this collection instead. Maybe the Skyline polish, good color for Fall.
It’s more of a baked formula – which is always less by weight than traditional powder formulas, but they take up a similar volume.
Oh wow, I missed that it was baked. That changes the value significantly. Thanks Christine!
