Deborah Lippmann Holiday 2011: Do Ya Think I’m Sexy Nail Lacquer

Deborah Lippmann Do Ya Think I’m Sexy Nail Lacquer ($18.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) contains hexagonal red-hued glitter suspended in a fairly thick, clear base. It’s something that would work better for layering than alone, because I couldn’t get near to opaque in two coats. You’ll really have to move and finagle with the glitter so that it is spaced evenly across the nail. I tried to work it across and into areas where there were no glitter but still had some bunch-up.

I think you lose some of the interest from the hexagon-shaped glitter particles when they get layered over each other in an attempt to go opaque, because in this shade, they’re all the same color. As a holiday shade, it could easily be layered over golds and silvers for added oomph. I don’t have tons and tons of glitters in clear bases, so nothing came to mind to dupe it, but I bet you could find red glitter in a clear base–though it may be harder to dupe the shape.  (Would love to hear your potential dupes!)

The swatches do not include a top coat, because I wanted to show off the texture of the polish, so you have an idea.  It’s not going to be smooth–you’ll have some bumps and unevenness because of how the glitter pieces collide and lie on and near each other.  I’d recommend two thick layers of top coat if you wanted something smoother.  Removal is par for the course with a glitter polish and will take some extra patience and elbow grease.  I normally get a week or so of wear with minimal tip wear from Deborah Lippmann’s polishes.

I’m a little bummed out by this polish. I wanted it to be a red version of Across the Universe… or, put another way, Ruby Red Slippers with a red base instead of black. That would be well worth the DL price. But for this… I think I’ll pass. Maybe Milani will make a Rubies polish to go with Gold, Silver, and Gems.

i came here to say the same thing. i donno who would spend almost twenty dollars (!!!!!!!!!) on this. most other glitter polishes i can justify but this one… no, just no.

Is a red glitter polish that hard to make? I feel like even the brands that make amazing glitter polishes have a hard time with this.

LA Splash makes gorgeous glitter polishes (Almost 1 coat and they’re not terribly bumpy) but even their red is sparse and not nearly as nice as their other glitters.

I’d like this in a different color base but clear just makes it look frustrating to work with. I guess Revlon Slipper has the same idea as this one. Clear base with red and silver micro glitter and holographic hexagonal glitter.

Illamasqua nail varnish in untold is similar but with smaller glitter as well as be-clause I said so by zephyrs by opi. Both apply more evenly but need 3 coats. I think this glitter is too huge anyway.

Nicee! 😀 it’s a good idea for Christmas time..and i think layering it,would be better..except for the removing phase,of course! 😀

Nice photos!:D

I layer it on top of a similar red color (limited addiction or silken cord, both by essie) and I think it looks amazing! Don’t really like it as much on its own…

I love red, and I love glitter.SO how can I possibly not love this right?Wrong.
Let me tell you the first thing that came to mind.Blood Cells.I’m sorry if that grosses anybody reading this, but I’m sure I’m not the only one that thought this.

I could definitely see this looking amazing over another polish, on its own however, not as much. It’s definitely great for the winter season!

Wow…I’m undecided. I wanted to get this polish w/such viligence but after seeing this…hmmmm @ $20 per bottle. Who knows…I may just bit the bullet.

Christine, I have a question…I may have asked it before, but I can’t recall your answer; how do you remove glitter nail polish without hurting your nailbed from all the hard pulling/scratching? Even when I wear a glitter over lay, it holds on for dear life :-\

I just press Zoya Remove+ against it (on a felt cloth) for 5-10 seconds, go to the next nail, do for all ten, and then go back and remove.

I’ve seen on Korean blogs, soak the cotton pad with nail polish remover, then put that on the top of your nail, finally cover the cotton pads with aluminum foil about 10 minutes. Alumium foil keeps the nail polish not dry the whole time. In 10 minutes, all the glitter just comes off like nothing. I always remove it that way, perfect!

I think this is why she usually puts her glitter polishes in a black base… (Although a pink or orange base would have been kind of awesome too). Too bad, it looks tempting in the bottle!

Ahahaha I actually kind of like this.
I really like how lippmann polishes are so addicting xDD
I know that many of her polishes are dupeable, but across the universe, red ruby slippers (or was it ruby red slippers? i need to check my label xD), lady sings the blues, they’re all gorgeous. Not to mention lippmann’s polishes came out first. Sure, the drugstore ones are good but I like how lippmann’s glitter are more reflective 😀 which is why I think this this red one is so pretty.

I really wish she’d make her glitters more opaque… it’s totally not worth the $$ when other brands such as Wet N Wild and Milani come out with such similar polishes for a few bucks =(

this looks a lot like chancer by butter london. i don’t know whether they sell it anymore, but i have my bottle still. it’s not easy getting the glitter off when it’s removal time, i will say.

Sorry, but I respectfully disagree with this – Chancer has a red base and the glitter particles are much, much finer. This is nowhere near the same texture or finish.

I am so disappointed. I was hoping for a red version of Ruby Slippers. $20 is way too much for a layering polish. I am also hoping Milani comes up with a Ruby version of Gems.

I would have to pass on this looks like a cheap glitter polish a pre-teen would use. Even if layed it seems like the glitter would be hard to work with.

I imagine it would look great on top of Barry M’s red glitter polish as a base which would give colour coverage to the nail. Then with this on top = ruby slipper effect!

This looks gorgeous in the bottle or whatever but on the nails I dont know if I like it much 😛 For some reason I imagined gold polish under this.. 😛 I think it might look decent haha

Wow! Red Glitter for Christmas!? Who woulda thunk…

I can think of 2 dupes or near dupes off the top of my head: Diamond Cosmetics Red Chunky Glitter (in a clear base) — $2.75 for .4oz. Sephora by Opi also has a new chunky red glitter too called Be-Clause I Said So. Isn’t there also a Miss Piggy version of this by Opi?

These swatches are disappointing… I really wanted this! Could you do a swatch of it over a red nail polish? I don’t know if I want to buy this just for layering just yet. I would put it over Milani Ruby Jewels which is a red base with red microglitters.

Awww! So dissapointed! nothing like the promo pictures’ opaque looking glittery goodness. Looks a little clumpy and unmanageable. I feel like if it just had a little more of a base color to it, it’d be a lot better.

I think this is very average for a Lippmann polish :/ I thought it was nice in the bottle but not so much on the nail. This is why I love Temptalia, Christine! I think it could have been better if the size of the glitter was more varied. The uniformity of the glitters just isn’t attractive (in my own opinion).

Looks great in the bottle, but it’s too sparse on the nail. Can’t say I’m a fan. :/ I don’t know if I would use it for layering because it looks like it would be really uneven, especially when an amateur like me applies it!

I thought it had a red base too…cancelled my order (which, thankfully hadn’t shipped) after seeing your swatches. Really wanted to love this.

This one’s definitely on my list! I was mildly disappointed that Ruby Slippers was in a blackish base, so now’s my chance to put it over a red like I wanted 😉

I do find that some of her glitters (glitter in the air for example) is very hard to place the glitter. I wish this one had different sizes of the glitter for that reason. But like you said, as a layering, it should be awesome!

I know I’ve seen dupes for Ruby Slippers but I don’t think I’ve seen anything yet for this one. I haven’t swatched it yet but the only one I can think of would be China Glaze Ruby Red Pumps but I think the glitter is smaller, definitely no hex.

honey. you need another nail polish as a base for this. be it red or black, or any color you fancy. you are not supposed to wear this nail polish all by itself. i think a red or black nail polish would look great on this one. and then your nails will be extra sexy.

I don’t know why but I love this! It looks so romantic to me, it reminds me a lot of scattered rose petals. Probably because of the shape of the glitter and how large it is. I would definitely wear this as a valentines day polish!

I definitely agree with you! I think this polish is fun and leaves a lot of possibilities with how you can wear it. I can’t wait to get my bottle I ordered.

This polish alone looks scarryyy but I guess if you layered it we wouldn’t get a grasp of the texture and exactly what kind of glitter it is….

That is literally dollar store glitter.. :/

The reason it looks so awful is because there’s no variety–no small or round pieces, just a single variety of glitter. the only way I can see this looking good is if you cover your entire nail in it.
