Cult Nails Hypnotic Collection Review, Photos, Swatches

Cult Nails Hypnotic Collection is now available, and Temptalia readers can take $5 off $40+ orders with code TEMPTALIA, good through 8/31. There are four shades in the fall collection, and each bottle contains 0.5 fl. oz. and costs $10. The shades include: Awakening (dusty teal), Enigmatic (purple base with a brown hue), Hypnotize Me (sheer green jelly with glitter), and In a Trance (olive green to muted gold).

  • Awakening is a dark, smoked teal-blue with a cream finish. I needed three coats for opaque color, because the consistency is on the thinner side. It has a dustier appearance (so it looks more muted, less intense) compared to MAC Deep Sea and Rescue Beauty Lounge Teal. It’s like a teal version of MAC Blue India.
  • Enigmatic is a plum purple with hints of brown and red flecked with silver and plum shimmer. I needed two coats for opaque color. The brown hues of the shade disappear under brighter light. China Glaze Urban Night is a bit lighter and doesn’t have any shimmer.
  • Hypnotize Me is a very barely green-tinted base with iridescent blue and green glitter. It’s supposed to be sheer, and if you want a more cohesive result, it’s probably best as a layering shade. The texture is extremely thick–it’s very much like jelly or jam or even like hair gel (thick of the type in a tub). Because of the overall thickness of the formula, you have to be careful applying the color. I only did two coats, because I didn’t want to go too thick.
  • In a Trance is a olive green with tarnished gold shimmer. It was opaque in two coats, and the formula was just right–not too thick or too thin. To me, this was the standout shade of the four, particularly because of how easy it was to apply. The base color is similar to Rescue Beauty Lounge No More War. It’s not quite as bright or as green as China Glaze Peace on Earth.

In a Trance had the best formula, while Awakening was a little sheer (needed three coats) and Hypnotize Me is extremely thick (not gloppy necessarily, but it truly has the texture of a gel).  I like the concept of Hypnotize Me but would appreciate a thinner consistency overall. In the past, I’ve tested out several shades from Cult Nails, and the wear is great–a good week with minor tip wear (with a proper base/top coat).

I was prepared to hate Hypnotize Me as I scrolled down. Funny enough, it’s the only one I like. I’m sure I would be a layer-er as I have pretty beat up nails and don’t like people to see them.

Hypnotize me, while yes, thick, is absolutely stunning layered over the darker shades in this collection – my favorite combo is one coat of Hypnotize me over 3 coats of Awakening. Sparkle city! Both colors are really transformed in that combo!

I like In A Trance – I looked at the set on line but know I would not wear the light turq. topper, so right now my cart has the other 3 in it (with 2 others) while I make up my mind.

Enigmatic is a yes without a doubt. When I saw Hypnotize Me I said ooh, then I saw it swatched and said ewww lol. Still a pretty color but it looks 10 times better in the bottle.

I would give it a B- too. First of all these nail colors are way overpriced, compared to other high-end good brands like OPI and Zoya. I haven’t tried Cult Nails, but I would not pay $10 a bottle for them. Secondly, I don’t get the layering polish “Hypnotize Me” because I would only really layer it over Awakening. “Hypnotize Me” also looks similar too,but not exactly like Sinful’s Nail Junkie.

Hypnotize Me is interesting. The colors seem very fall-ish, and the red and blue ones are nice for that. It seems that Hypnotize Me is very similar-looking to Sally Hansen Lime Lights (in shade and sheerness), but with glitter.

I just got Cult Nails’ A Day At The Races and I love this polish. I really hope people aren’t discouraged by the review (fair as it is Christine!) because some of their colors are lovely and I’ve found the forumla to be top notch.

I really appreciate the less than ordinary shades they’re offering here. They’re not completely un-dupeable, but they’re more interesting than what a lot of nail polish collections look like to me.

Although i’d readily wear all of these shades, i’d only consider purchasing Hypnotize Me essentially because of it’s uniqueness. And i’m not even a huge fan of shimmer (in any beauty item, let alone polish) however, I enjoy the illusion of a gradient it creates from the white tips to the bed of the nail, and the versatility of a product like that.

A little sparkle can be fun – Go Cult Nails! (I think i’m buying Hypnotize Me :P)

Hypnotize Me reminds me a little of the old style of Pure Ice Heartbreaker (which is one of the best layering polishes ever!) I think that giving it a poor score because of sheerness seems rather unfair since it’s obviously a layering polish. Try it over In a Trance and you will most likely have your socks blown off. I love layering polishes so I’d consider purchasing Hypnotize Me.
