CoverGirl Sultry Lip Perfection Lipcolor

CoverGirl Lip Perfection: Sultry, Smolder, Bewitch, Impassion, Hypnotic, Enthrall

A month or so ago, CoverGirl reached out to be to see what my interest would be in testing out their new CoverGirl Lip Perfection Lipcolor ($6.99 for 0.12 oz.)–but there was a caveat: they wanted me to use nothing but these lipsticks for seven days. In the interest of full disclosure, I know that there have been other bloggers who participated in CoverGirl’s challenge and were compensated for their time, but I refused monetary compensation, because I choose not to participate in paid reviews. I needed to make that clear so that you know my policy hasn’t changed on that! It’s a personal choice each blogger must make for themselves, so this is just how we do things here on Temptalia. 🙂

What’s a better test of their “silk moisturizing complex” than swatching 44 lipsticks over seven days? The biggest claim that Lip Perfection makes is that by prolonged use of their formula, your lips will be “soft, smooth, [and] beautiful” within seven days. The other claim being “in a single stroke, lips are enhanced with rich, rewarding color.” So last month, I worked through the 44 shades over a week’s period and am ready to roll out the reviews, photos, and swatches! (You’d be surprised how un-fun it is to go through and crop photos for 44 lipsticks.)

  • Sultry is an opaque, medium-dark, pink nude with a slightly glossy sheen.
  • Smolder is an opaque, warm, medium-dark brown with a soft redness and a slightly glossy sheen.
  • Bewitch is an opaque, dark orange-brown with a slightly glossy sheen.
  • Impassion is an opaque, coppery-red with copper and ruby red shimmer with a glossy sheen.
  • Hypnotic is an opaque, rosy brown with a lighter peach frost finish.
  • Enthrall is a semi-opaque, coral-red with subtle ruby and gold micro-shimmer and a glossy sheen.

On average, Lip Perfection lasted four hours on my lips, with darker shades lasting five to six hours, but the lighter shades pulled in at four hours. These tend to be more opaque in color, and this is definitely a factor in getting better wear, as it takes longer for the color to fade away. Lip Perfection lives up to the claims of rich color, and one stroke gets you there, too.

These are moisturizing in some ways, less so in other ways. I very much missed my Jack Black Lip Balm by the end of seven days, but my lips didn’t take a beating nor were they dried out, cracked, or peeling. They were fairly normal, but I always felt like I needed to reach for something to put on them (which, for the week, was a Lip Perfection lipstick). They’re moisturizing while you wear them, and when you remove them (or they fade away), your lips aren’t dying for balm, but I couldn’t go too long without putting it on again.

Just like in lip balms, sometimes they make your lips feel comfortable and moisturized while you wear them, but they don’t necessarily give you that deep-down hydration that drier lips need. These moisturize the lips, and the moisturization lasts longer than the lipstick color does, but I wouldn’t throw out my lip balm. I feel as if I’ve found my holy grail in lip balm (Jack Black), and without it, my lips were not in the same shape as they typically are–slightly less soft and smooth.

They last decently through drinking and light lunch, but it has a slightly waxy taste that I did detect when eating/drinking. There is a sweet vanilla scent to these, and it varies from semi-strong to subtle, but I could still smell a bit of the waxy base alongside the vanilla. If you are particularly sensitive to scents/tastes in your lip products, I’d recommend buying one to test (particularly from a retailer with a return policy). The darker shades will stain lips, which may be good/bad depending on your preferences. Each lipstick is housed in a square tube finished in a shiny grayish-purple. The bottom of the lipstick is colored in a way that is designed to reflect the actual shade; they’re not exact but are close enough that they’re helpful.

I really do like these. I was impressed by the creaminess and smooth glide of the lipstick when applied. The color payoff was excellent, and the shade range is lovely with a whole slew of colors and finishes. They’re certainly worth more than just a look next time you’re at the drugstore.

I kept getting coupons at walgreen’s for $2 off 1 of tese and they kept having the buy one, get one half off so I purchased about 8 right off the bat and I really love them. I wasn’t going to go crazy bwecause I literally have over 100 lipsticks but At such great price I could not resist. I agree wholeheartedly with your review. I think for the lower price I got them at, they are a fine lipstick.

I think it’s important for a line of lipsticks to have a variety of shades (but with the quality of the products the same across the board) to give as many people as possible access to their perfect colour. I wouldn’t be surprised if Christine is intentionally reviewing these by colour group — these are all the brown-nudes and natural colours — and soon we will see others of their range. Plus, brown shades are absolutely gorgeous on some, especially darker skin beauties, and it’s terribly unflattering on some others — brown shades make my olive NC30 skin look incredibly lifeless! I won’t be purchasing any of these specific colours for myself, but it makes me happy to see drugstores gradually come out with more variety of shades of lipsticks without sacrificing quality, since one size does not fit all!

AS Avatar

Think about someone with a skin tone different from yours. Browns are neutrals on women of color, and the opacity evens out lips that are lighter at the center. Beauty brands are finally wising up that women of color actually buy more color cosmetics per capita than white women and are increasing as a percentage of the US population. Proctor & Gamble, which manufactures Cover Girl, has been a leader in this respect, with the Cover Girl Queen Collection and the My Black is Beautiful marketing initiative. I don’t see why anyone should object that shades flattering to women with deeper complexions (browns) should be phased into CG’s standard lines, rather than tagged as such with a separate collection. According to US Census bureau statistics, in about 30 years, whites will no longer be a majority in the US. You better believe cosmetics companies are paying attention.

I own several of the lip perfection lipsticks, they’re great. Super pigmented, if you wear them you had better be prepared to keep wearing them for the next day and a half! (the brights stain) Even the ones that someone would think would suit the complexion of “whites” are incredibly opaque.

Also, I don’t think because someone thinks certain colors are unattractive makes them objecting to a diverse skin color audience. It’s perfectly normal for someone to say meh to shades they don’t think would suit them.

Personally, bewitch is not an attractive color to me but that’s because I don’t like oranges at all.

Great Review! These lipsticks have quickly become my all-time favorite from the drugstore. I am planning on doing a review on these too! You should check out the color “fairytale”, it’s the perfect summer color!!

Holta Avatar

SimplyStephy, I agree, they are really good, together with Revlon Colorburst new lipstick and lipgloss line. And wouldn’t you know it, I have been wearing Fairytale for about two weeks in a row and love it. My other lippies are begging for attention lol.
Christine, thanks for the review!!

braveviet Avatar

I love them, not too glossy or too matte, staying longer than other drugstore lipsticks. I love 3 of them (divine, heavenly and delish)

emi s. Avatar

Wow, 44 swatches. That sounds like a lot of work for you, but that’s awesome for us, especially since it’s a drugstore product we can’t test out first.

Emmaline Avatar

Suprisingly I really like sultry. When I saw the post title, I thought meh, I will stick with mac, but I may just pick this one up. Thanks Christine.

Christina M. Avatar

I’m glad you’re reviewing/swatching these. I have heard really good things about them but was told that indeed the color on the bottom of the tube wasn’t very helpful and the last thing I need is another lipstick in the exact same color of something I own. yay! thanks

td Avatar

As a woman of color, Smolder is the perfect nude. Thank God Covergirl took in consideration those of a darker color because if it were up to some people…..

Marina Avatar

I LOVE these. I have Divine (the purplish one) and it is so amazing. The pigmentation is crazy, and there’s a color for everyone. I can build it up easily, and the more pigmented ones sometimes stain a bit, but in a natural-looking way…

pia Avatar

I’d definitely pick Smolder and Bewitched if only I don’t have TONS of similar colors already *le sigh*

Thanks for all the swatches, Christine…44 shades in a week are a LOT. Hats off to you!

Wendy Avatar

Enthrall is surprisingly gorgeous! I’m glad you’re swatching these as the outside tube color is deceiving, and there actually aren’t that many swatches on the net. I have 9 and put those on my blog but obviously there’s more than 9, lol. Darling is probably my favorite, perfect MLBB shade!

BiancaCA Avatar

I will give these a look next time i’m @ target! What blush are you wearing? You’re glowing! I’ve been trying to find something like that that doesn’t break me out.

Emilie Avatar

Sultry looks like such a great everyday shade.

Just a question though, are these sealed? I always want to try the color sensational lipsticks by maybelline since everyone raves about them but they’re not sealed so you never know if they’ve been tampered with or anything and I’d rather not risk getting sick or a cold sore. It’s such a shame since some of the colors are nice.

Christine Avatar

Hey Emilie,

They are sealed with a clear sticky label thing, but the one thing I will say is that you don’t have to peel them off to get them to open. Ironically, while I want my products to be tamper-proof, it’s always so annoying removing it when you’re home, LOL! I was able to pull the cap off and break the seal that way – so I’d look for any breakage or buy online (which is what I do a lot of the time – drugstore.com or walgreens.com).

Quinctia Avatar

While I’ve had decent luck with the Color Sensational lipsticks locally (my nearby drugstores are dead, dead in the makeup aisles), if you are worried it may be worth your while to decide on a few colors while in the store, and then order them online? Ulta often has deals on drugstore products, and they sell some higher-end stuff as well, so you could do a combo order of sorts.

I haven’t been wearing mine often lately, but they’re a decent lipstick and well worth your while if you find colors you enjoy!

Lissette Avatar

thanks for doing reviews on these!! im always soo unsure about buying lipsticks from drugstores because you dont know how it will look on you until AFTER you buy it and try it at home and the returm policy at most drugstores sucks!! LOVING sultry!!

Lulee Avatar

the return policy at rite aid, cvs, and mostly walgreens allows for returning used makeup. those are the three biggest drugstores soooo yeah.

Leslie Avatar

Oh my god, I’m SO excited that you’re reviewing these! These are, without a doubt, my absolute favorite lipstick. Even more so than MAC (with the exception of color selection). I have really dry, flaky lips that are constantly peeling. Most lipsticks, especially nudes and light pinks, always collect into the many lines on my bottom lip. These don’t do that…they last forever (stain even), are really smooth and never settle into lines. I think I have about 12 at this point, but everytime I’m in a CVS or Target, I peruse the shades for something that strikes me.

They are wonderful for the price. And I have to add a tip as someone who has many of these: if the bottom of the packaging looks even the slightest bit pearlescent, it WILL be a frosty shade. I’m not a fan of frosty lipsticks so I’ve been a little startled with how frosty some of these are. But lesson learned. I try not to pick any that have any glitter or pearl and I usually come away pretty happy. Can’t wait to see the rest of the shades!

Pia Avatar

has anyone tried to de-scent one of these? unfortunately, i’m one of those smell-sensitive people. I don’t mind vanilla in my coffee or creme brulee but I do mind them on cosmetics. a lot. these lippies sound very promising and at such a bargain but the smell scares me! lol!

Mabeline Avatar

Christine, you have the best lip swatches ever! Everyone else just shows swatches on the back of their hand or arm and stops there. Some just show a close-up of their lips with bad lighting. You go over and beyond with a swatch on the hand, lip close-up and an overall face shot which gives a good perspective on how the color looks with the rest of the face. I just love your blog because of the details you put into it. Thanks so much!

Devi Avatar

Wow, that seems like a lot of work. o_o 44 lipsticks? o_o

Sultry looks amazing on you, I don’t know if my NC35-37 skin tone could pull it off as well as you did.

Can’t wait to see the others!

Courtney Avatar

I have this one in Spellbound. I like the color and texture…but I keep tasting the waxiness and they’re awful! I want to love them, but I just can’t.

Cassandra Avatar

This is perfect! I’ve wanted to try these out but I wanted to see swatches and now I’ll have all of them then I can choose I know for sure I want Fairytale, can’t wait for the rest of the swatches! (:

BeckBeck Avatar

Ooh, I was drooling at Sultry, but I already have Cosmo. Thanks for that hint. Even if they’re not actual dupes I can use that to talk myself OUT of buying more lipstick! (I’m a lipstick Bermuda Triangle. I buy them, put them on, put the tube in my purse for touchups, and then I never remember to reapply and they NEVER COME OUT OF MY PURSE – they just live there.)

ashley Avatar

I have sultry and its so pretty im an nc40 I’m thinking about getting smolder is it a cream finish with no shimmer i really don’t like shimmer. Is it a everyday lipstick?

Jess Avatar

Hi Christine,
I have to know, what eyeliner are you wearing in the Bewitch, Smolder and Sultry swatches? It is absolutely stunning on you!!

Mimi Avatar

Wow 44 shades!!! Thanks so much for all your hard work, Christine!

I absolutely love enthrall! Can’t wait to try these… and can’t wait to see what they have for berry shades~

Janny Avatar

I personally am in LOVE with these lipsticks. I own 6 of them and would love to collect all the colors for when I do freelance work.

On another note, I don’t think there is a single lipstick out there that does not look good for you.

Lorraine ER Avatar

These lippies are great, I have four of them and I want more. I think they are an awesome way to try out new shades and perfect for keeping in my purse.

Jenny Avatar

I have four or five of these including Enthrall but now I want Smolder and Hypnotic. They’ve replaced the Maybelline CS lipsticks as my favorite drugstore lippie.

meme Avatar

There are 3 shades I MIGHT wear – but I honestly cannot remember the last time I tried a CoverGirl lip product and did not want to rip it right off – lack of pigment – turned on me another shade – dried my lips out and on and on. I am with you on the lip balm. Fresh clear and Jack Black are my go to lip products. I don’t even worry about lipstick unless it’s a really important function I am going to. And then it’s almost always a Jose Maran lip product for me.

Mary Beth Avatar

Thanks for reviewing these, Christine!

I discovered the Lip Perfection line a few months ago — and absolutely LOVE them. They are moisturizing, well-pigmented, and long-lasting. The application process is also incredibly smooth. These colors last for 6 hours on me without a retouch. In my opinion, these lipsticks are comparable to [and in some cases, superior to] department store brands. My favorite shades from this line include the following: Flame, Eternal, Soulmate, Siren, Fairytale, Dazzle, & Spellbound. Can’t wait to see the remainder of your review! 🙂

aloix Avatar

Yaay, excited to see that you’ll be swatching all of these! I’m a bit of a d/s l/s collector, and I have too many. Of course, I’ve been wanting to get more of these for my collection, as I’ve heard good things. This will help me decide 🙂

rashmi Avatar

Christine 😀 i always read your reviews 3- 4 times and while reading this review i could actually hear your wonderful voice and the way you explained everything was so divine i must say 😀
firstly the cover girl policy you mentioned and the rules ..god you are the ONLY one who could do that and thats what makes you even more special .
The colors are awesome and you are rocking every bit of it honey 😀
love being here ,
Love temptalia and you 😀 😀

Gauri Avatar

I ♥ every single little thing about these lipsticks! Their challenge was creative. Their shades are genius. Nice little square tube which has a simply great presentation. That’s it!!! I’m off to browse.

Devi Avatar

Hmm, I was just thinking that Smolder looks like a MAC Mocha dupe. They look almost spot on in your swatch gallery too… I may get this one.

Kim S. Avatar

I tried out a couple of these CoverGirl Lipsticks because their square shape reminded me of Maybelline Color Sensational Lipsticks, which I love. I think the colors I got were Sultry and Temptress. I am unsure of the color names because I had to return the lipsticks. No matter how lightly I applied the lipstick, or how much I blotted, the lipstick ended up on my teeth! Really unattractive. I liked the colors and formula feel, but the constant lipstick transfer to my teeth was a deal-breaker. Did anyone else experience this?

Tigress Avatar

I love Smolder. Thanks so much for such a comprehensive review. I am sensitive to scents, so I really appreciate you touching on the scent and the taste. More power to you for reviewing 44 of these lipsticks! Your dedication is most appreciated.

Shannernanner Avatar

I really like how Sultry looks but I don’t buy from brands that do animal testing. Anyone know of a shade like it in another brand? (I saw MAC mentioned but they are owned by Estée Lauder, who also does animal testing.)
