ColourPop Trap Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick
ColourPop Trap Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick

ColourPop Trap Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is a subdued, gray-ish mauve with hints of pink and an ultra-matte finish. The texture is lightweight, a little runny but with substance, so one coat is more than enough product for both top and bottom lips. It has a quick dry down, so you’ll want to work quickly. I recommend applying to either the top or the bottom lip, then going to the opposite lip to maximize your working time. This one seemed to “crack” a little more after the dry down than some of the other shades, so I liked to relax and smile as it was drying down, which helped the color dry down more smoothly overall. Once it dries down, it feels fairly weightless and doesn’t feel clingy, though if you put your fingertip to your lip, it has a dry “feel.” It will emphasize lip lines but wore down evenly over an eight-hour period. It was non-drying until the very last hour. It was mostly transfer-proof, though if you do more than pat your lips with a napkin, it does flake off very slightly. I don’t have any good dupes for this one, so hopefully readers more familiar with all of the liquid lipstick offerings on the market may be able to chime in with more. NARS Catfight (P, $26.00) is more shimmery, darker. MAC Fun Finds (LE, $16.00) is lighter, glossier. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

ColourPop Tulle Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is a medium-dark, neutral-to-warm plum-red with a matte finish. It had fairly coverage that went on evenly and smoothly without pulling into lip lines or emphasizing them too much. It wasn’t too thin, but it wasn’t thick or goopy, so dry down time was a little faster than average but I had enough time to apply to the top and bottom without getting streaks. This shade lasted for twelve hours with minimal fading and what fading there was fairly even. It had minimal transfer until after I ate, and then it seemed to transfer more noticeably but blotting once or twice post-meal should help bring it back down to minimal transfer. For me, I noticed my lips feeling a little dry after six and a half hours of wear, and it was getting painfully dry at the eight-hour mark. Maybelline Burgundy Blush (P, $7.99) is darker, brighter, warmer, glossier. MAC Diva (P, $16.00) is brighter, glossier. Burberry Redwood (304) (P, $30.00) is lighter, brighter, glossier. Laura Mercier Myth (P, $24.00) is lighter, brighter. MAC Eugenie (LE, $16.00) is darker, cooler, glossier. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Formula Summary: ColourPop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is a long-wearing, pigmented lipstick that starts off glossy and dries down quickly to that super flat matte finish. They have minimal transfer with some of the lighter shades having almost none for the first few hours of wear, but any time you’ve had a meal, they lose that transfer-resistant quality to a noticeable degree. They tend to wear anywhere from six to ten hours with darker shades maintaining better color coverage and wear over a longer period of time. Some shades get a little drying about two-thirds to three-fourths through the wear, while a few shades have been fairly non-drying even many hours into wear. They fade away evenly with most color loss occurring from the center of the lips if eating a more oil-based meal but the majority of color survives a meal. Reapplication has been hit or miss and tends to depend on how well it wore away and how easily the shade applies normally, but reapplication tends to emphasize the lip’s natural texture significantly compared to initial application and gives lips a very wrinkled, dried-up look. I’ve layered gloss on top of some shades with moderate success, though it will obviously lose the matte finish and will transfer and I’ll get tiny flakes where the matte lip color has lifted by mixing with gloss but has been pretty minimal. The formula had no discernible taste or scent. After playing with the packaging, it seemed like 16 of the 25 shades I received were significantly overfilled and had regular overflow of liquid lipstick coming out of them for about 10-15 open-and-closes where I needed to use a makeup removing wipe to clean the rim of the tube prior to closing or else the lipstick would ooze out of the closing but seems to have finally stopped (if that changes, I’ll update the post, as I’m still fussing with the packaging!). I have not had this issue with any of my other liquid lipsticks (Anastasia, Hourglass, Kat Von D, Make Up For Ever, Stila) personally, though readers reported experiencing similar issues with Anastasia and the previous Kat Von D packaging.

Re: packaging, over the last three days, I’ve been opening and closing all 25 shades, as well as laying some down and keeping some standing up, rinse and repeat. I’ll also be turning some upside down to see how they fare to make doubly sure that they’re only overfilled, which seems to be the case at this time. If you carry it with you for travel or in a makeup bag, you certainly don’t want to worry about opening/closing it! If you don’t wipe down, the liquid will dry and crust over the base of the tube (that is slightly exposed to air). It’s messy business! 12 of them have had enough accumulated product after one to two openings/closings to ooze out, and then seven more had some excess accumulation after three to four openings. 6 were totally fine even after opening and closing them over a dozen times.

Here are my best tips for applying matte liquid lipstick, as it is a bit of a different animal compared to regular lipstick or liquid lipstick (that doesn’t have the matte dry down):

  • Proper prep is always useful — smoother lips are best, as dry or flaky lips will often be emphasized (lines can get emphasized, too); hydrating with lip balm prior to applying (and then removing before you put on the product) helps keep lips happier longer
  • Start in the middle of the lip and work your way to the edges, try to apply using fluid strokes and then use very short taps and strokes to finish or manipulate any edges
  • Don’t fuss with the color too long; a lot of streaks and unevenness will disappear as the color dries down
  • If you’ve never tried liquid lipstick, you may need to apply a few times to get the hang of it, and removing using jojoba or olive oil is easiest on the lips
  • Keep your lips partially open while it is drying down; avoid the upper and bottom lips touching as the formulas tend to turn a little tacky as they are drying down and this will cause color to lift unevenly and give you patchiness that wasn’t there to begin with
  • Some formulas react well to gloss/balm on top, some don’t (still testing this one for that), which can be helpful for managing the drying factor of some liquid lipstick formulas/shades

Ooooh, dupes! Trap looks pretty similar to LASplash Ghoulish (itself being a dupe of LC’s Cashmere) and Tulle looks almost like the KVD Liquid Lipstick in Lolita, maybe a tad darker (I ended up with a dark batch). Or like Lolita and Vampira combined. 😀

Trap will be all over on Instagram for sure! Then again, all of these probably will. Thank you for all the work you put into your reviews!

Tulle is really pretty, but I think I will stick with regular lipstick, less fuss and more forgiving. The regular lippie dupe Burgundy Blush looks gorgeous

They are soooo-hoooooooo matte! They really do live up to their name, hehe. I personally like a creamy matte finish more, but I guess that girls looking for true ultra matte will love these.

I find Tulle very pretty but wouldn’t wear it myself in a liquid to matte formula. Would defo try it on as a traditional lipstick though.

Trap is just on the edge of being too light IMHO but I like that it brings another color I see a lot to mind. I can’t quite recall the name though? Illegal Citrus Velour? Felonious Satsuma Wool? Something to that effect. 😛

I’m glad you reviewed these first case these two were among the ones I was most interested in. I gotta be honest.. I’ve never been a fan or understood the liquid lipstick trend. I do love Colourpop and they ar very cheap so when I saw that these were coming out I was a little interested. My main problem with more liquid lipstick formulas is how drying they are. Sure, the application isn’t my fave either but drying formulas are my main deterrent. Since these are so cheap and, from what you say, not terribly drying, then I think I can try them out. I really hope I like them but if not… I’m pretty content with my regular lipsticks 🙂

I love Tulle, and I also have the Burberry lippie in Redwood on my wish list! Then again… at $6 USD… How can you beat that? 😛

Thank you for the review! A certain youtuber posted a Snapchat how they reallyyy didn’t like these and how ABH liquid lipsticks are so much better, but an A- isn’t bad at all, I guess it’s different from shade to shade though!

No problem, Tova! I don’t like Anastasia’s formula that much, and so far, I like these more for general comfort/feel compared to ABH myself.

These are definitely dupes for Dose of Colors “brick” (tulle) and “stone” (trap) matte liquid lipsticks. They came in the terra collection set and are being sold individually later on this year!

Christine, have you reviewed any Dose Of Colors products?

I can’t quite bring myself to hop on this trend-wagon because the formula doesn’t seem forgiving to perennially chapped lips like mine, but it’s nice to know there are inexpensive alternatives if I just have to see for myself!

Darn it! Tulle looks like such a pretty color! But between my age (52) and my small lips, all these super-flat, matte lip products add ten years to my face :\

I’ve never tried lipstick in this form. Lipstick in a tube has always provided what i needed in a quick easy way. Is there a brand you know of that’s similar, a drugstore brand would be easiest. With absolutely no experience putting it on or knowledge of how it feels on the lips i think i should try it out first. Thanks for your help! As always you blow my mind with your fantastic and detailed reviews i don’t know how you manage to test all this stuff.

Tulle attracted my eye IMMEDIATELY when I saw the preview on Instagram! I can’t wait for these to release. I am a liquid lipstick JUNKIE. 😀

Hmm, so far, I love Ofra Cosmetics and LASplash! Ofra is EXTREMELY comfortable, while LASplash has the lasting power (even though I cannot stand the scent of it!). 🙂

Trap looks awesome for sure. I don’t know if I’ll get any of these because liquid lipstick is just so drying (and I’m terrible about not fussing with my lips) but they are very pretty for sure! Can’t wait till you review the bright pinks!

I feel ya, LB! I can handle them if they aren’t too drying or not drying until 8+ hours into wear, but if they feel drying half-way in, then it’s hard.

I would love to see how Trap compares to their Lippie Stix in Tootsie. I love the way Trap looks in these swatches but I already own Tootsie and wouldn’t want to buy a super similar shade.

Tootsi pencil is closer though darker and warmer, and Tootsi Lippie Stix reads significantly warmer than Trap.

Yay, you reviewed two I wanted right away! They look great on you, too! Tulle is so, so pretty…I think Trap might be too light for me … but I still might get it! 😉

The colors are beautiful. I think I’ll get a couple and see how Iike the formula and if I have the oozing issue. Trap will definitely be on my list. I’m such a sucker for pinky-brown nudes.

Keep us posted! ColourPop did reach out this afternoon to inquire about my troubles with the packaging, so they’re looking into it.

Glad to hear they are asking about it. I don’t know when I’ll order next, probably next month. I’ll let you know whether I have any issues whenever I do order them.

I like Trap, but I feel like it would probably make me look dead. Tulle is really pretty, though! However, my lips definitely fall on the dry side, so these might be too matte for me to wear comfortably. At the price point, though, I will probably get a couple just to try!

thank you for bringing up the issues with the packaging , but good to know the oozing finally stopped .

hope it remains that way .

definitely getting tulle . such a beautiful shade .

looking forward to your in-depth reviews of the other shades on my wishlist .

thanks , christine ! 🙂

I have to have Trap! Yesterday, it immediately jumped off of the page at me! I sleep with Vaseline slathered on my lips every night , and the KVD liquid was great, so I’m looking forward to my purchase!

Oh my gosh, oh my gosh those colors are so freaking drool worthy!!! lol I’m so having a moment right now. I love the fact that those colors are also super on trend and affordable. Like yaaaaaasss! lol

These shades are so amazing. These are going to be huge with liquid lipstick lovers. I am really wishing I could pull these off! 🙁

Tulle is splendid! But then again, of course I would love it because one of my favorite lipsticks is MAC Diva! Trap looks intriguing, but I am not so sure it would look good on me though. I wonder how close Trap is in color to MAC Verve?

How do you think “Trap” would look with warm, olive Asian skintones? I’m scared this colour would look dead on me but I do think it’s a pretty colour!

I’ve been seeing these all over social media this weekend!!! *_*

I’ve been craving more matte shades but the price point for even the cheapest made them expensive to ship into Canada.

Tulle is really cool shade.

I like that there are more nudes from colour pop to start with because nude and light warm tones are hard to get from any brand in this formula.

WOW.. That is a THOROUGH review! For anyone who doesn’t read all of the GOOD STUFF at the top, and just skips through, you’re missing A LOT of great information! Christine, you really are working these! Your commitment is inspiring! The good grades are wonderful for anyone who likes these so that’s fabulous! Not my needed texture or formula though! Tulle is EXACTLY my lips when the moisture is sucked up. Boom. Congrats, ColourPop! You found my color, but me no need it! 😛

I still love Tulle. Not sure why since colours like that don’t tend to appeal to me too much. I hope I can get my hands on it. 🙂

I really am liking Tulle. It will probably look a bit lighter on me, which is perfect! I’m having a hard time deciding whether or not to buy some of these. The only liquid lipsticks I like are KVD because they don’t make my chronic dry lips feel like the Sahara. But these are so matte and so cheap but then there’s that packaging issues and…I’m probably going to order 1 or 2, decided they’re too drying and never use them again…or I may really like them…help?!
