Coast to Coral

ColourPop Coast to Coral 9-Pan Pressed Powder Palette ($12.00 for 0.36 oz.) is a new, nine-pan palette with four true mattes shades, two sparkles-over-matte shades, and three shimmers. Per the back of the outer packaging, Anemone and Keep Swimming are “not intended for use in the immediate eye area” (likely due to certain color additives; they did not have plastic glitter listed as an ingredient).

I’m not against the concept of a matte with larger sparkles, but the issue is that–presently–the sparkles tend to be more of a nuisance rather than performing a function. They tend to disperse unevenly or add fallout during application with little adhesion over time. The shimmers were more consistent but still seemed on the drier side compared to the brand’s shimmers from a year or two ago. The mattes were more substantial and blindable, though on the powdery side.

Atoll

Atoll is a darker peach with strong, warm golden shimmer that gave it a soft, metallic finish. It had good color payoff that was buildable to full coverage with less than half of a layer (or more opaque when applied with a fingertip). The texture was soft, more loosely-pressed but didn’t seem particularly prone to fallout so long as I pressed/patted it onto my lid. It stayed on nicely for eight hours before fading noticeably.

Formula Overview

$4.50/0.05 oz. - $90.00 Per Ounce

The new Pressed Powder Shadow formula is supposed to be “highly pigmented” with an “ultra-velvety and silky” texture that is “long-wearing” and “adheres easily to the eyes.” Most of the shades have semi-opaque to opaque pigmentation that applies well to bare skin, blends out without issue, and lasts for seven to eight hours.

The matte eyeshadows tend to be a little more powdery, though soft and finely-milled, in the pan, while the shimmers have a creamier, dense consistency. Occasionally, the more sparkly or metallic shades apply better with fingertips or a dampened brush.

Crush

Crush is a pale, pinky-peach with moderate, warm undertones and a matte finish. The eyeshadow had a moderately powdery texture that felt lightly creamy, more substantial but still had some fallout and a tendency to sheer out when I worked with it. The color showed signs of fading after seven and a half hours of wear.

The Keys

The Keys is a light-medium pink-coral base with warmer, peachy-gold shimmer throughout that gave it a metallic sheen. The eyeshadow had opaque pigmentation in a single layer, which applied well to bare skin and diffused nicely along the edges without sheering out too quickly. The texture felt smooth to the touch, denser but not overly firm, and picked up well with a dry brush. It wore well for eight hours before fading visibly.

Anemone

Anemone is a vivid, medium pink-coral with subtle, warm undertones and a mostly matte finish. It had nearly opaque color coverage in a single layer, which was easily buildable to full coverage with a touch more on top. The texture was soft, smooth, and lightly powdery but wasn’t too prone to fallout and didn’t sheer out too readily. It stayed on well for eight and a half hours and left a faint stain behind.

Formula Overview

$4.50/0.05 oz. - $90.00 Per Ounce

The new Pressed Powder Shadow formula is supposed to be “highly pigmented” with an “ultra-velvety and silky” texture that is “long-wearing." The way the Pressed Pigments differ is that they're not intended for usage on the immediate eye area.

The majority of the shades are semi-opaque to opaque in coverage, blend out fairly well, and can sometimes be a bit drier/more powdery compared to typical matte shades. They often wear eight to nine hours on me before fading, but many shades in the Pressed Pigment family leave some staining behind.

Keep Swimming

Keep Swimming is a medium coral with moderate, warm undertones and flecks of gold sparkle over a more matte finish. There were a lot more sparkles in this shade than most of the brand’s sparkle-over-matte shades, and this resulted in a lot of fallout and random dispersion of sparkly bits all over the eye area when I went to blend out this shade. The base was nearly opaque, while the texture was moderately powdery, slightly thin, and drier. It wore decently for eight hours but had moderate fallout over time.

Angelfish is a muted, medium-dark orange with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good pigmentation that was buildable to full coverage with less than half of a layer on top. Drop Off

Drop Off is a medium, orange-brown with moderate, warm undertones paired with a matte base but with larger flecks of gold sparkle sprinkled throughout. The issue with the sparkles was that they fell out during application and did not distribute/combine with the base, so they were more of a “looks pretty in the pan” but useless applied. The eyeshadow was richly pigmented with a smooth, more blendable texture that lasted for eight hours–aside from the bit of additional fallout from those pesky micro-sparkles!

Colour Pop’s ability to ruin a perfectly good palette with either the addition of useless sparkles/glitter, or now, additives is becoming more and more frequent. What is the point of an eyeshadow palette if you can’t use a third of the shades?
Plus, lots and lots of these shades can easily be duped by the brand’s own stash anyway. I did like Atoll and Diver out of the shimmers, they are quite pretty.

We try to approve comments within 24 hours (and reply to them within 72 hours) but can sometimes get behind and appreciate your patience! 🙂 If you have general feedback, product review requests, off-topic questions, or need technical support, please contact us directly. Thank you for your patience!
