ColourPop 1st Base Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick
ColourPop 1st Base Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is described as a “mid-tone true pink.” It’s a light-medium pink with subtle, cool undertones and a very matte finish. This pulls almost warm-toned me, due to my yellow undertones, but I expect it can look more neutral-to-cool depending on your coloring or what other makeup you’re wearing that day. It applied fairly evenly with good color coverage, but it dries quickly and tends to “crack” once dried (you can see it coming apart just slightly where you have deeper lip lines). It lasted for eight hours but the color pulled into lip lines noticeably. This shade was slightly drying after five hours of wear and worsened from there. Marc Jacobs Beauty Jolly Molly (220) (P, $30.00) is brighter, cooler, glossier. Kat Von D Jeffree (P, $19.00) is darker, warmer. MAC Nouvelle Vogue (LE, $16.00) is darker, glossier. Tom Ford Beauty Pink Tease (03) (P, $50.00) is lighter, warmer, glossier. NARS Marisa (P, $32.00) is cooler, glossier. Bite Beauty Sweety (LE, $24.00) is brighter, glossier. Maybelline Pink Sugar (P, $7.99) is darker, more muted, warmer, less glossy. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
ColourPop Donut Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is described as a “bright peach.” It’s a lightly brightened, light-medium pink-coral with warm undertones and a very matte finish. It had mostly opaque coverage that went on fairly well. It dries down quickly but has a little time to work, and then once it dries down, it feels soft and thin without cracking when you smile. The color lasted for eight hours and faded a little more heavily towards the center of the lips but not to the point where it left an obvious ring. It was a little drying after five and a half hours of wear. ColourPop Solow (P, $6.00) is lighter, more muted, cooler. Make Up For Ever #4 (P, $19.00) is darker, glossier. Kat Von D Jeffree (P, $19.00) is brighter, cooler. NARS Dolce Vita (P, $25.00) is darker, warmer. ColourPop Topanga (P, $5.00) is darker, warmer, glossier. Kat Von D L’Ecole des Femmes (P, $21.00) is darker, brighter. MAC Make Me Gorgeous (LE, $16.00) is darker, warmer, glossier. NARS Natalie (P, $32.00) is brighter, cooler, glossier. Tom Ford Beauty Matthew (LE, $32.00) is more shimmery, darker, brighter, glossier. ColourPop Rocket (P, $5.00) is lighter, cooler, glossier. NARS Brigitte (P, $32.00) is lighter. Formula Summary: ColourPop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick ($6.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is a long-wearing, pigmented lipstick that starts off glossy and dries down quickly to that super flat matte finish. They have minimal transfer with some of the lighter shades having almost none for the first few hours of wear, but any time you’ve had a meal, they lose that transfer-resistant quality to a noticeable degree. They tend to wear anywhere from six to ten hours with darker shades maintaining better color coverage and wear over a longer period of time. Some shades get a little drying about two-thirds to three-fourths through the wear, while a few shades have been fairly non-drying even many hours into wear. They fade away evenly with most color loss occurring from the center of the lips if eating a more oil-based meal but the majority of color survives a meal. Reapplication has been hit or miss and tends to depend on how well it wore away and how easily the shade applies normally, but reapplication tends to emphasize the lip’s natural texture significantly compared to initial application and gives lips a very wrinkled, dried-up look. I’ve layered gloss on top of some shades with moderate success, though it will obviously lose the matte finish and will transfer and I’ll get tiny flakes where the matte lip color has lifted by mixing with gloss but has been pretty minimal. The formula had no discernible taste or scent. After playing with the packaging and the tubes, it appears that about 16 of the 25 shades I received were significantly overfilled and had regular overflow of liquid lipstick coming out of them for about 15 open-and-closes where I needed to use a makeup removing wipe to clean the rim of the tube prior to closing or else the lipstick would ooze out of the closing. I have not had this issue with any of my other liquid lipsticks (Anastasia, Hourglass, Kat Von D, Make Up For Ever, Stila) personally, though readers reported experiencing similar issues with Anastasia and the previous Kat Von D packaging.

I know others will like, but this formula is not for me –even if they aren’t too drying, they look dry on the lips, to the point of emphasizing every line, and the color looks flat. I prefer satiny or glossy lips, or even semi-matte is fine.
Totally understand!
Still haven’t received mine 🙁 They shipped but didn’t get here in time to beat the holiday weekend!
I’ve seen a few people on Reddit complaining that these flake. Have you had any trouble with that? I hope mine are okay!
I haven’t noticed flaking! I get a little transfer with some of the shades for the first hour or so.
These both look really sweet on you and go perfect with that eye look.
Thanks, Ginny!
Wow. These are just so matte my lips feel dry just looking at the pictures.
They are super matte!
lol me too! I was thinking the exact same thing looking at the pics 😛 waay too matte for my tastes
Oh man, these look good!
They’re very summery!
I’m getting the “don’t hot link” graphic instead of most of photos. I tried refreshing, and clearing my cache, and I’m still getting it. I’m using Google Chrome Version 43.0.2357.130 m and it is up-to-date.
I can see the pictures of the lips. The colors look gorgeous. I’m glad to see they got nice grades.
I am guessing you saw them on another site, and I have no idea how to clear it on my end. I’ve tried clearing all of the images through our cache, just in case that fixes it!
I don’t remember seeing them, but it’s possible I did when I was googling for other reviews.
Thanks for looking into it.
No problem! Let me know if it happens to clear up 🙂
Gorgeous colors, but the formula not so much. So dry! Good thing there are some wonderful dupes! I already have MAC Make Me Gorgeous, and still am looking for Maybelline Pink Sugar for my super intense warmer pink.
I hope you can get Pink Sugar!
Of all the matte formulas you’ve tried so far, which ones did you find to be the most and least drying?
Kat Von D is least, Anastasia is most.
I’m the only person I know who finds Kat von D’s more drying than ABH’s. Although I don’t think either brand is terribly drying.
Probably the hardest part about makeup is knowing that it really does vary from person to person 🙁
I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it as a reflection on you at all. Of course one can’t know how it’ll work on everyone else. That’s why its great to have variety. It just figures I’d have the opposite reaction as everyone else. I just meant it as an aside; I shouldn’t have butted in. Sorry to you and Ellie.
No, no, no!! I didn’t take it badly. I just meant that is what’s frustrating about trying makeup in general – it can be so different from person to person. More in a “there’s nothing we can do about it” kind of way, but it can make it harder to find what does (or doesn’t) work. 🙂
Thanks!
Whew! I’m so glad you don’t mind, Christine. I was afraid I sounded like I was griping. 🙂
I really want to try Donut, but I just don’t know if my lips could handle it. It’s so pretty, though!
Have you tried any of the liquid lipstick formulas before, Lacey?
I haven’t yet! My lips stay chapped no matter what I do. They’re never nice and smooth for more than a few hours! I’m afraid these formulas would just be a flaky mess. :-/
It’s definitely a formula (along with most mattes) that probably isn’t best for your lips then 🙁 If you ever wanted to try, I would look for a budget option just to see first!
Your eyeshadow is gorgeous!!!
Thanks, Pami!
A bit to dry…
Gotcha!
I really like both of these colours.
Yay!
Can you do a list of the best liquid lipsticks? There are so many mixed reviews of every brand. I’d like to know which is closest to NYX soft matte lip cream, bust super long lasting. I have dry lips, so which one is the least drying?
I really haven’t tried that many relative to how many are out there, I think!
I’ve tried a few and none are that close to the Nyx soft matte formula just because the NYX one isn’t very long lasting so that’s why it’s much more comfortable and less drying. However my favorite formula is definitely the Jeffree Star liquid mattes. They’re the most comfortable on my lips and don’t feel that dry to me at all, and they last a very long time. They’re probably the closest and the colors are super pigmented and gorgeous. They’re my number one pick for lipstick like this.
Donut was automatically on my wish list when I saw the first swatches online. I’m actually liking the drier formula that Kat Vonn D has (they are truly transfer proof!) so I’m excited to place an order for these once they restock at colourpop.
1st Base is a touch too bright, and if we get the new Maybeline shades up here I think i’d rather go with Pink Sugar. 😉
Donut’s already on my list for when they restock the website. I love anything with a warm undertone, and this looks like something I’d probably would wear a lot, and I don’t have anything very similar! I didn’t even try to beat the release craziness when they first came out. Hopefully they’ll restock soon and there won’t be another rush!
I really like these liquid lipsticks! I got six of them and they are so nice. I agree they are VERY matte, but they feel so light and with no transferring it is worth applying a heavy lip balm the night before wearing. Thanks for sharing your review!
Oooh, Donut looks lovely! It doesn’t look like it has a lot of close dupes. But my dry lips cannot handle these types of products. I’m tempted, even though I know I shouldn’t.
I just received my haul today and I have donut and it is such a beautiful color. I didn’t find it to be drying and doesn’t pull on my lips. What I like is that it doesn’t get crusty like lime crime does and find that formula so much more drying. Colourpop’s formula feels lighter on my lips and is comfortable. ON me I’d didn’t crack at all and I ate with it and it pretty much remained in place. Overall, for the price the quality far surpasses other liquid lipsticks. I am in love
As beautiful as these are, I just don’t like matte lips on me. It feels like my lips get drier than they already are.
So bummed two of the three shades I ordered were missing from my order, and now they are all sold out! Ugh… but the one I got was perfect, love everything about the formula and application!
Donut is a very pretty color! It’s too matte for me though. I think I’d just feel weird wearing something THIS matte.
The two pinks I’ve tried so far have really made the wrinkly lines in my lips stand out. I’m kind of disappointed, to be honest, because I like the colors, just not the formula. (Solow and Shimmy.)
Ooooh Donut is so cute! I’m so effin obsessed with peach right now.
I got my order last night. I haven’t had a chance to do more than hand-swatch any of them yet, but it looks like they’ve fixed the overfilling issue (mine all had clean tubes with no spillage when I opened each one)
They look awesome on you, Christine! <3
Love these colours! Can’t wait for them to restock!
I’ve been meaning to try the ColourPop Range so much…I think I should start with these!!!
Yikes… So sad to hear that 1st Base has an issue with cracking, as that is my main concern! =( Thanks so much for the reviews and swatches as always. <3
I agree, I love the glossy finish more than the pure matte finish, but the pure matte is starting to grow on me.
The matte has its place for sure 🙂
