China Glaze & Hunger Games Collection: Colours from the Capitol

China Glaze Colours from the Capitol Collection is slated for March launch. It features twelve shades with each shade being named after a different district. This post features these six: Agro, Dress Me Up, Electrify, Fast Track, Foie Gras, and Harvest Moon. Reader Kim did an excellent job explaining the names-to-district component.

  • Agro is a rich, dark olive green with subtle yellow undertones and olive gold shimmer and metallic threads. This shade is named after District 11 for agriculture. I used two coats for opaque color, and it had a good consistency. Cult Nails In a Trance is much lighter, more olive green without a blackened edge. China Glaze It’s Alive has similar color components but looks totally different. NARS Mash looks almost the same.
  • Dress Me Up is a dusty, rose peach with a cream finish. This shade was named after District 8 for textiles. I used two coats for opaque color, but the consistency was a little thick. Zoya Pandora is lighter. Nubar Moire is darker.
  • Electrify is red and gold glitter suspended in a clear base. This shade was named after District 5 for power. I did two coats by itself, and it’s not quite opaque–with a little patience, I think you could manage to achieve almost opaque color coverage with three coats. I couldn’t think of a dupe for this one.
  • Fast Track is a grayish beige with pale yellow gold flecks of shimmer. It’s not quite opaque after two coats. This shade was named after District 6 for transportation. China Glaze Knotty is lighter. China Glaze Ingrid seemed really similar when I swatched this initially, but it’s much darker.
  • Foie Gras is a purple-tinted brown cream. It was opaque after two coats, but it was a little thick. This shade was named after District 10 for livestock. China Glaze Street Chic is browner. Urban Decay Barlust has a similar color but has shimmer.
  • Harvest Moon is a rich, warm copper with lighter copper shimmer. It was opaque in two coats. This shade was named after District 9 for grain. Zoya Tanzy is much more orange. Nubar Caramello is similar but a little more orange.

The formula was inconsistent, but overall, it fell short of my expectations for China Glaze, which is a brand that usually releases colors with a great formula.  The creams had a thicker consistency that almost felt runny.  You really need to make sure to wipe off excess before applying to the nail to avoid having a pool of color.  Electrify has a thicker consistency, which was expected, because of the clear base, but it distributed the glitter fairly evenly.  Agro and Harvest Moon had the best formula from these six, and their drying time felt fast.

The colors are really pretty but I honestly wish the names were relevant to the book and not just named for districts. Like I wish Electrify was called Girl On Fire or something. Maybe I’m too obsessed with Hunger Games lol!

Lillian Avatar

The colors originally had MUCH better names – like Primrose (for Prim) instead of Dress Me Up. Until Lionsgate threatened China Glaze with a lawsuit.. they had to change all the names 🙁 But at least the colors stayed the same!

I’m absolutely in love with Fast Track and definitely want Agro and Harvest Moon too. I feel like I’m going to be buying a lot of this collection.

Hey Christine,
I was just wondering if you read the books? If you haven’t, you really should! They’re amazing! Also, thanks for the great review and pictures!

Ester Avatar

I just picked up the book two days ago, and can’t wait to read it, see the movie, and get some of the nail polishes! I want to get Agro, Dress Me Up, and Fast Track so far, can’t wait for the other swatches.

I really don’t understand why this collection is called “Colours from the Capitol”. In the books the people of the Capitol wore bright colors and dyed their hair and skin crazy shades. These are more like colors from the districts. Even the names of some of the shades seem related to the districts. That aside, I do like some of these colors and will probably buy most of them simply for the fact that they are Hunger Games related. And to anyone who hasn’t read the book series, I highly recommend it! =]

Do you know if Fast Track is similar to ORLY Nite Owl; I already have the latter and I don’t want to buy Fast Track if they’re nearly identical! Love love love Harvest Moon!

As an avid fan of the books and nail polish (China Glaze in particular), I’ve been dying to see swatches of these!!! Thanks! I’ll be stalking your blog waiting for the other 6! I’m not super excited about these colors but I think I’m just tired of dull colors…but they are really pretty!

Hi Christine! Awesome collection by China Glaze! Dress Me Up looks A LOT like Cafe con Leche (by Opi) which is one of my favorites as well. Fast Track is a total must for me! Foie Gras from the looks of the pictures looks a lot like and reminds of Sephora’s by Opi Metro Chic. Agro not so much, I have It’s Not Rocket Science by Orly that I recently got & have gotten so many compliments on at the counters even when I was in London a couple weeks ago. It’s a medium shimmery chartreuse color that is just beautiful and eye catching. You should check it out got mine at Ulta about 3 weeks ago. XX

These colours are beautiful! I’m not so much for the green or glitter, but I love the rest – totally my weakness category for buying the same types of shades over and over. Can’t wait to see the rest of the collection when it’s available! Thanks Christine!

Christine, I just want to thank you for taking the time and effort for this post. I feel like all of us take your blog for granted in a way, and your readers don’t appreciate you nearly enough. I can’t imagine the time it took to paint your fingernails, take beautiful photos, and then remove the polish only to repeat.

Thank you for taking the time to post swatches and reviews on a daily basis. They are always very useful, and I’m sure most of your readers would be lost without them!

Thank you, Christine. 🙂

Agro and Fast Track are gorgeous shades! CG has found the perfect mix of different color and sparkle for the two–I literally gasped! Thanks for the swatches 🙂

I was thinking how electify would look amazing over harvest moon and then i scrolled down and i was so happy you did that because it just confirmed it for me! will totally be buying those two.

Miss J Avatar

Hm. I am really drawn to Electrify in the bottle, but it doesn’t draw me in when I see the way it looks applied. Oh well, saves me money, I guess! 🙂 Thanks for the wonderful swatches, Christine!

Ghoulina Avatar

I really thought I was going to be more wowed by this collection. I guess it’s better for my wallet that I only ended up liking one shade! Fast Track is so pretty!

Rachael Avatar

I just bought some of these today, one of which was Agro. It’s such a unique color and I’m really glad that I bought it! My mom is wearing it currently and it looks gorgeous.

Briana Avatar

I don’t know how some are considering this collection a disappointment. This is one of the more impressive collections I’ve seen from China Glaze recently. Some of the colors are so unique. Anyone who has read The Hunger Games can easily understand the allusions from the book to some of these colors.

I just got a bunch of these from Sally’s on the sale rack for 1 buck each! Was super excited not to miss out on these. 🙂 Foie Gras took 3 coats for me. It was transparent in some spots on a few nails especially by the nail-beds. It also looks considerably darker. Its sort of like the color of a powdered purple. Like dry ceramics under glazes.
