Chanel Charming Ombres Matelassees de Chanel Eyeshadow Palette ($80.00 for 0.32 oz.) is a limited edition five-pan eyeshadow palette described as “soft beige to rich purple, matte and pearlized shadows.” Chanel’s holiday collection has been out for a month or so, but the eyeshadow palette was slow to arrive and as soon as I saw it pop up on Nordstrom, I purchased mine. For someone who likes soft, neutral eyeshadows, it’s a nice palette that leans towards the darker end of the neutral shade, so it’s a rather smoky, sultry combination of colors. It’s not a particularly unique set of shades, but I can see some really loving and reaching for it often. The formula has such a silky-soft texture that it can be a little powdery, though it blends beautifully and lies well on the skin (so it doesn’t look powdery or caked on when applied), but you may want to tap your brush slightly to minimize excess powder. Also, this palette is a lot more product than the last version; this palette contains 0.32 oz. whereas Pearl River had 0.21 oz.

Charming #1 is a light, peachy-beige with subtle, warm undertones and a satin finish. It had good color payoff, and the texture was very soft and finely-milled, albeit a smidgen powdery. Too Faced Bubbly (LE) is similar. Too Faced Whiskers on Kittens (LE) is a smidgen pinker. MAC Her Cocoa #2 (LE, $15.00) is similar. bareMinerals Peace (P) is warmer, a touch darker. See comparison swatches.

Charming #2 is a medium brown with a subtle gray tinge on the top, while the undertone is still on the warm side. It had a matte finish, and it was very, very soft–a little powdery as a result. MAC Caramel Sundae (LE, $15.00) is lighter, more shimmery. Burberry Pale Nude #1 (P) is a touch darker. Bobbi Brown Praline (LE, $21.00) is shimmery. See comparison swatches.

Charming #3 is a medium, warm-toned bronze with a frosted finish. It had excellent color payoff, and the texture was soft and buttery to the touch. Too Faced Brown Sugar (LE) is darker.Too Faced Chestnut (LE) is less shimmery. Illamasqua Dart (P) is similar, a touch darker. Too Faced Gangsta (LE) is similar. Clinique Ample Amber (P, $16.00) is a cream product. MAC Romantico (LE, $15.00) is similar. MAC Eclair (LE, $18.50) is warmer, darker. MAC Lie Low (P, $21.00) is less shimmery. Dior Golden Savannah #2 (LE) is slightly more golden. See comparison swatches.

Charming #4 is a dark brown with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. This shade felt very soft but didn’t stick together well, so it seemed sheer when swatched. When I applied it to the lid, it was a more buildable, layerable color that took two to three layers to really get the color to hold. MAC Midnight Hour (LE, $15.00) is similar. Tom Ford Beauty She Wolf #1 (LE) is cooler-toned. Urban Decay Bewitch (LE, $18.00) is a touch lighter. MAC Showstopper (LE, $15.00) is cooler-toned. MAC Cross-Cultural (LE, $15.00) is warmer. MAC Brown Down (P, $15.00) is also warmer. Benefit Quick, Look Busy (P, $20.00) is similar. Inglot #329 (P, $6.00) is darker. See comparison swatches.

Charming #5 is a cool-toned taupe with a purplish cast and a matte finish. Again, it had fairly good color payoff and is a more buildable shade as the texture was so soft that it was a little powdery. MAC Keep Your Cool (P, $21.00) is more shimmery. bareMinerals Exhale (P) is lighter. LORAC Espresso (P) is darker. bareMinerals Vow (P) is lighter. Bobbi Brown Hot Stone (LE, $29.00) is warmer. See comparison swatches.

I’m so happy you like this. I bought it last week during Lord and Taylor’s friends and family at 10% off. Their tester never arrived so I took a chance and bought it without testing. I relly like it. You’re right that it’s not all that unique, but it’s a nice grouping of colors to have all together and I was happy with the texture.

Hi Christine,

What a gorgeous palette of neutrals! It was surprised to see how warm some of the colors in Chanel Charming lean — thanks for the wonderful swatches 🙂

I had been excited for this palette and I finally saw it in the store yesterday and I was really disappointed. The colors were so blahh, it was a bit too warm for my liking and I was borderline thinking that I could find a dupe for this in Loreal or Maybelline…. Just going to stick to Tom Ford!

The first 4 shades really remind me of a CoverGirl quad I had back in High School, when they actually did really good shadows. It was one of the few palettes I even came close to hitting pan on. However, looking back, they weren’t the best browns for me, so this is a definite pass for me, especially at $80.

I tend to go for a lot of color on my lips, especially in the fall when the darker colors can come out to play! Shades like these are the perfect complement to a bold eye, IMO.

I buy so many neutral palettes thinking I cannot go wrong and will use it often, but if all I have ARE neutral palettes, it gets too boring!!

Bought this sight unseen. Got the call from my Nordstrom Chanel counter lady Friday that it’s in. She only had three so it’s on hold for me. Unfortunately I am not feeling this palette. I am let down. For the price I expected more. I ordered the Laura Mercier Artist’s Palette and am hoping that it will be some nice natural colors!

For eyeshadow at this price point I feel like each and every shade should receive a solid A+ review. I just expect better from companies like Chanel or Dior, but often time their shadows are disappointing.

Love it! For this price I want something I’ll get a lot of use of and this is definitely one like that! This is perfect for travel! For once there’s enough matte’s in a palette! Gorgeous! xx

I’ve been waiting for your review on this! I’m glad it got a good grade because I bought it sight unseen…Lisa Eldridge posted a photo of it and said it was amazing.

Way too warm for me. 🙁 Chanel seems to be putting out a lot of these warmer neutral tones lately, so I hope they’ll swing into some cooler or neutral shadows soon.

Really love this, but $80? If it was about $20 less, I’d very likely pick this up. I’ll take a look at it this week if my local stores already have it, but it’s gonna have to be pretty stellar for me to even consider purchasing this. Especially with all the other great holiday palettes coming out this time of year.

I have spent more than $1k on makeup in the last week including this palette, fatal eyeshadow, Farouche rouge allure, tom ford she wolf, tom ford bronzer and cream foundation brushes guerlain crazy ENTIRE collection excluding nail polishes, guerlain les ors primer, nars concealer, Marc Jacobs eyeliner pen, shiseido eye cream, and so on.,. You’re the one who tells me to splurge and you should be the one to tell me to stop!

My problem with Chanel eyeshadow quads and palettes is always this: they are stunning in the pan, so I MUST have them, but on my eyes they all morph into the same nondescript smokeyness. I have the Charming Palette too, but on my eyes I see so little difference between this and the Raffinement shadows, even though pan-wise they’re not even remotely similar.
The Charming palette is worth it just for the joy of swiping it on my eyes every morning, though ;).

My problem with palettes is that I will more than likely not use one or two, and I am better off taking the $ and buying two singles. More bang for the $ in a palette I know. I am going through years of makeup today, my intended challenge, good grief I have so many old things stuck in the back of the drawers. Once cleaned up then I can better decide what I want! I am going through the longing for a new face phase!

The idea of creating your own palette becomes attractive when realizing so much of an existing one goes to waste, and several brands have this option, however Chanel colors and textures are exquisite. What’s a girl to do!!!!!!! And marketing as Limited Edition sometimes means rushing to the counter or online and swiping the credit card without much thought, done it plenty of times!!! What’s a girl to do!!!!!!!

I finally made it to the Chanel counter to pick up this coveted palette. Every time I saw it I knew I had to have it becuase Chanel doesn’t often come out with dark, warm palettes with a mix of finishes. Since Kaska Beige I anticipate every new release hoping for something I will love just as much. This is it!
Honestly, it wasn’t what I expected in person and the tester was plastic! I swatched it as I walked away and fell in love with the middle color. It looked too shimmery in the pan, but it is lovely on the skin. I was most disappointed with the last color. I was hoping it would pull more purple than the grey it looks like in the pan. When I put my brush in it crumbled a bit, but wasn’t dusty and the color pay off was rich and I can see the purple in natural light (when am I ever in natural light?)… so even though it wasn’t what I was hoping for it wears beautifully. I will live in this palette.
