Candeur et Experience (268)

Chanel Candeur et Experience (268) Les 4 Ombres Multi-Effect Quadra Eyeshadow ($62.00 for 0.07 oz.) is an all-mate, neutral palette with a pop of rusty copper. The palette has been available for some time but served as the inspiration for the rest of the brand’s fall collection. Since it was included with the launch, I figured I’d re-photograph, -swatch, and -review. The eyeshadows felt softer and more finely-milled compared to the original quad, and I noticed the fourth shade went on a bit darker on me (enough that I made it a separate shade).

Candeur et Experience #1

Candeur et Experience #1 is a light-medium brown with moderate, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had a silky, smooth consistency that was dense without being overly firm in the pan. It had nearly opaque pigmentation that adhered well to bare skin and blended out easily. It stayed on well for eight hours before fading visibly.

Candeur et Experience #2

Candeur et Experience #2 is a very light, golden brown with strong,w arm undertones and a matte finish. It had good color coverage in a single pass, which applied evenly to bare skin and diffused with ease along the edges without losing its opacity. The consistency was smooth, velvety and not at all powdery but easy to pick up with a brush. It wore nicely for eight hours before fading a bit.

Candeur et Experience #3 is a deep, rusty copper with warm, red undertones and a matte finish. It had nearly opaque color payoff paired with a smooth, silky texture that was finely-milled without being powdery nor too firmly-pressed into the pan. This shade lasted well for eight hours before showing signs of fading.

Candeur et Experience #4 (2020)

Candeur et Experience #4 (2020) is a medium-dark, taupe-brown with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. The color seemed to darken slightly when applied to my skin, which wasn’t an issue I had with the other three shades, though I didn’t have issues blending it out on my skin during application.

The texture was smooth, silky, and finely-milled but not powdery (which is hard to find!) and yielding to a dry brush. It had nearly opaque pigmentation that could be built up to full coverage with less than half of a layer. It stayed on well for eight hours before fading noticeably.

I tried this when it first came out and there was still a Chanel counter nearby. Much as I knew it wouldn’t be to my liking at all, I still sort of hoped because I am such a sucker for Chanel’s quads. It wasn’t for me and still isn’t and this applies to all the quads they’ve come out with in this collection.

For some reason that I cannot quite put a finger on, I really love this one far more than I did the OG version of this! It just looks richer or something? More pigmented? Smoother? Idk? But I’m tempted to save up for it after I get Mr. Scunci Sinkbeast fully taken care of first.

I have said it before. When I worked in corporate law, this was my daily. The copper flattered my blue eyes and the browns kept it office-friendly. There wasn’t much like it at the time it was introduced but as the dupe list shows, it would be easy to create the look now at a much more affordable price point.

Even though I am not a fan of matte eyeshadow at all, I think that these mattes look superior to most I have seen. I wish that one of the brown shades (maybe the first one) was a different shade – an antique gold perhaps – it would allow for more variability in looks from the quad.

How I loved, and still love, Candeur et Experience! It’s one of my all time favorite quads. Although some people originally complained that there was not enough contrast between the three brown shades, if they had adopted the concept of gradient color that Lucia Pica champions, they would have seen how beautifully the three brown shades flow. As for the red shade—wow! Applied with a light hand and well blended just above my crease shade, it really opened up the eye area with autumnal warmth. Beautiful! Since my original quad has seen better days, I should probably order this new iteration ?

Is it possible to see the swatches of the old version still for comparison? I tried to use the compare-function but it does not seem to find both palettes…

That’s because only one shade is different but the palette itself is the same, so it’s not listed as two separate palettes! I compared them myself and mentioned that comparison in the first paragraph above!
