How do you figure out what colors to pair together in a pre-made eyeshadow palette?
I usually look across rows/columns, start to look at trios and quads and go from there. Sometimes I just have a certain combo in mind, e.g. sunset-colored eye, and will pull shades as they appear.

Metallic Eyeshadow
I do appreciate the utility and what matte eyeshadows bring to the table, but I really, really love shimmery eyeshadow–especially sparkly metallics or smoother, shinier metallic shades. The only time I dislike them are when formulas are too thick/stiff or when they emphasize fine lines/lid texture.
