Burberry Lipstick in Hibiscus (20) Review, Photos, Swatches

Burberry Hibiscus Lipstick
Burberry Hibiscus Lipstick

Burberry Hibiscus (20) Lipstick ($30.00 for 0.13 oz.) is an intense shade of ruby red–though more red than ruby, I’d say! When I was picking out three lipsticks to purchase, I thought Hibiscus might be a deep pink, rather than red, but it’s most certainly in the red family. There is a very subtle shimmer strewn through the color, but it’s not obvious nor is the end result shimmery in the least bit.

Burberry has created a solid lipstick formula–it’s creamy without being thick or slippery, and it’s moisturizing without sliding off in an hour. I picked only bold shades by chance, and Hibiscus was very rich and looked nearly opaque on my lips. It applied smoothly, evenly, and didn’t bleed on my lips (but very few lipsticks do). Being such a deep shade, it wore well–four hours and then left a stain behind.

Each lipstick has an embellished check pattern on the lipstick itself, as well as the same gunmetal, check-covered packaging that the other Burberry Bauty products have. The lipstick has a magnetic closure, and I was rather amused by how the lipstick would spin into place, no matter how you slipped the lid back on–just drop the lid on and it will swivel into place!

I think this is just the exact point of red that I hate most of all in make up (for lipstick and nails)! Union Jack seems a lot better!

Not to sound offensive, but in my opinion it gives a very “vulgar” effect. In my mind this colour is strongly associated with a.. ehm… certain kind of job. I know it sounds strange, but I’ve discovered that many girls share the same impression! 😛
However, I would never wear a red like this! It just doesn’t suit me!

Not only red lips (well, THAT kind of red) but also red nails… I suppose it comes from the ’70 looks. However, as I’ve said, it seems to be a quite common opinion… I was in a make up forum and we all started to call this kind of red “wh***-red” 😀 of course, just for having fun (since many girls registered there also used this colour… or better, the name has been given by them 😀 )
So, I think it’s just psychological! It’s like short summer dresses… I like them very much, I love how they looks on many girls, but when I try to wear one… I feel like a bag of potatoes! o_O so, no summer dresses for me… Instead, I just wear wonderfully evening dresses… I am content with those 😛

Loooove Red lipsticks! Just so sophisticated and confidant.

You got quite the red lipstick haul at Burberry (THREE!)!! I guess even after the Scarlet Season, you could always use a few more reds, right?! XD

I LOVE the packaging, it looks very old school and sophisticated. the colour is a nice solid add to a make up collection that i’d say you’d get a lot of wear out of.

Oh wow that checked pattern on the lipstick is really gross looking!! It’s so bad it’d actually put me off buying one. It looks somehow diseased.

When you asked that question about packaging putting you off a product I said no, but I’ve changed my mind now!

I think I love everything about this lipstick, the formula, the shape and case (I’m a sucker for pretty packaging). And I like the nifty magnetic closure, I’d be playing with it for ages lol

Love the colour and the packaging, but it looks kind of difficult to hold with the square base. Am I right or was this easy to apply with this container, Christine?

Burberry’s makeup has been taking a lot of critique but Hibiscus is the only lipstick I’ve bought so far and I love it! Glad to know someone else likes them too!

Opheliana Avatar

Isn’t it called Union red rather then Union jack?
I certainly like it, but if I would find them in my country I think I would go for union red rather then hibiskus, or possibly tea rose.
The packaging is adoreable.

I loved it! The color is beautiful, the packaging is beautiful (and smart). Unfortunately, I know it won’t sell in Brazil 🙁

I LOVE it! This red really stands out to me. I’m brand spankin’ new to the world of red lipstick, but I feel like I should have this. It looks gorgeous on you, Christine!

Very pretty – I did try this on as well. I guess I’m just not use to seeing myself with a red pout anymore. I bought Prune instead. The SA told me that I should blot this with my fingertips instead to make it look like a stain instead of applying directly from the tube. Or that’s what they were advised to tell customers. I did like the way that looked actually.

Yes, my husband played around with the lipstick tube as well for a couple of minutes till I told him playtime was over hahaha!

wow, i love it—Christine, do you have Illamasqua Maneater?–it’s also the red blue-based–do you think they are the same color? thx

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for the swatches of all three! I *needed* to see this!

Have I said thank you?

Thank you, thank you!

Gorgeous! I hope to see lip swatches of the others, because they all look amazing.

Damn you for making me *need* all this gorgeous makeup! I was so content with being ignorant of their existence… 😛

This is my absolute favorite kind of red. I especially love this one, it’s blue-based but not so overly so, I’m definitely going to get it. Love it on you, by the way!
