Bobbi Brown Smokey Cool Eye Palette ($48.50 for 0.22 oz.) contains six eyeshadows with finishes that range from matte to sparkle.  Overall, it’s just a so-so palette.  If you like your colors sheerer, then you may still want to consider it.  If you’re looking for a more intense smoky eye palette, you’ll want to keep looking.

Ivory is a pale, cool-toned white with a matte finish. This shade is part of the permanent range (and has been in a lot of Bobbi Brown’s palettes, too). It had fairly good color payoff, and the texture was soft, slightly powdery, but blendable. Here are several see comparison swatches for white eyeshadows.

Graphite is a pale, muted peach-brown with silver sparkle and shimmer. It had semi-sheer color payoff. It has a “Sparkle” finish, which tends to be a sheerer product that’s very sparkly. I didn’t have fall out issues with this shade, though! bareMinerals Ball Gown (LE) is more frosted. Too Faced Cheers! (LE) is lighter, more frosted. MAC Rubenesque (P, $18.50) is darker, warmer, cream. LORAC Light Bronze (P) is less sparkly. Maybelline Barely Brazen (P, $6.99) is less sparkly, more metallic. Chanel Beige Lame (LE, $28.50) is darker. See comparison swatches.

Smokey Grey is a slightly warm-toned, taupe with a soft, frosted finish. The texture was a little dry, and the color payoff was semi-opaque. It has a “Shimmer Wash” finish, which means it’s supposed to be “sheer, lightly pearlized.” Anastasia Antique (LE) is less frosted. Urban Decay Armor (LE, $18.00) is grayer. Urban Decay Mushroom (P, $18.00) is also grayer. MAC Satin Taupe (P, $15.00) is darker. MAC Stolen Moment (LE, $21.00) is purpler. See comparison swatches.

Truffle is a pale, rose-tinted beige with a matte finish. It is very similar to my skin tone, so it might be hard to gauge pigmentation, but when I noted it, the color was mostly opaque but the texture was somewhat powdery. Urban Decay Habit (LE, $18.00) is a touch lighter. Urban Decay Freestyle (LE, $18.00) is very similar. Urban Decay ABC Gum (P, $18.00) is warmer. Inglot #341 (P, $6.00) is pinker. See comparison swatches.

Platinum is a pale, golden beige with a frosted sheen. It was semi-sheer, and it is also a “Sparkle” finish, which again, all tend to run sheer (but sparkly). This had more of a sparkly sheen than full-on sparkle or glitter, and I didn’t notice any fall out with this shade. Too Faced Jingle All the Way Eyeshadow #2 (LE) is lighter. Clarins Forest #2 (LE) is similar. MAC Phresh Out #1 (LE) is lighter. MAC Tenderly (LE, $15.00) is similar. MAC Vanilla Diamond (LE, $21.00) is also similar. L’Oreal Iced Latte (P, $7.99) is warmer. Bobbi Brown Bone (LE, $28.00) is more glittery. See comparison swatches.

Caviar is a medium-dark black with a matte finish. It actually has quite intense color payoff, but it is easily sheered out as it is on the powdery side. If patted on over a primer, it is more opaque, but it needs that extra boost. See comparison swatches.

I’m not sure who their target demographic is….all that sparkle seems geared for younger ages, but the brand itself seems geared toward older users. Either way, I am not a fan of paying that much money for so little pigmentation. If you have to have a sheer sparkle then make one and call it day.

I was seriously considering this but then Naked 3 happened, and I can pretty easily find one nice grey (my current go to grey taupe is from a wet n wild 3 pan).

I know those shimmery shades are supposed to be for layering, but I’m not convinced! The pigmentation on those is quite bad. I checked that palette in person last saturday, for that price it has to be perfect!

This is a tough one! I love BB, but I don’t know how much use I’d get out of this, because of all of the other palettes I have. Hmm…

A friendly suggestion, when you review palettes, I’d love to read your opinion/overall impression of the entire palette and not just what you thought of each color. And, maybe, a comparison on how it stacks up to other palettes that are similar. That way it would be easier to gauge if we need this one if we already have the others. Basically, I rarely buy anything anymore without checking here first, so I need all of the detials!! 🙂

Hi Elle,

I usually do provide an overview, but this was a shorter review (it’s a “quick” review, so it is not as in-depth as a regular review) just to get it out the door as I am backed up for the holidays! 🙂 I’ve added a brief overview for you in the review above. Thanks so much!
