Showstopper

Bobbi Brown Showstopper Luxe Prismatic Lipstick ($37.00 for 0.13 oz.) is a vibrant, medium red with neutral undertones and fine, ruby red pearl woven through a more metallic finish. There was a smattering–read: buried under all the red pigment–of iridescent pearl that lured one in from the promo image but didn’t really exist in person.

On the brand’s website, under “why it’s different,” it says that it “comes coated in shimmer” as a “bonus” (ha, more like a cruel joke!), but under “what it is” (which is the first description), it’s supposed to have a “color-shifting” effect with “multidimensional pearl shimmer.” It doesn’t have any color shift, and the shimmer in it is more tonal, so it didn’t come off as multidimensional either. So, you’ll find that “product” on the rubric is quite down (where other claims can be accounted for). This is why oversprays can be more misleading than they are interesting.

The product itself was opaque in a single layer with a moderately dense, lightly creamy consistency that had good adhesion and was comfortable to apply and to wear. It stayed on nicely for over six hours, left a stain behind, and felt neither drying nor hydrating over time.

What an incredibly deceptive and disappointing product. I wanted this so badly because of what it appeared to be in the tube. The “overspray” makes it look incredible, but it’s just a metallic red. Shame on BB for the deception.

I totally thought this was going to be like Ciate Cosmic (which I have, so why was I looking?)! I canNOT wear this shade, though it’s beautiful on you and many other people… but the real downer is for something to look absolutely nothing like the promotional images made it seem.

Number #1 Bobbi Briwn had nothing to do with this brand anymore. Ester Lauder owns it so expect E.L. type products The foundations have been changed so much snd the shades ate totally different now

Wow – that was on my wishlist. The only thing that stopped me from seeking it out asap and getting it is I thought it was weird that none of the press photos you posted a few weeks ago announcing the Bobbi Brown holiday items showed a photo of anyone wearing it. I even went to the Bobbi Brown website to see if it had more photos and none of them there had any of the models wearing it, so I decided I should wait. I looked again now and can’t find the photos but there is a 30 second video there now that briefly shows someone for barely a second. I would have been so disappointed. Is it a nice red? Absolutely. But it’s not the right red for me and it’s not the product I wanted or expected.

Oh well, money saved.

To be fair the BB website does have a try it on feature with either your own photo or a models photo. I didn’t buy it because it was a red rather than a berry shade.

That’s funny I brought a couple of items from the BB UK site the other day and saw the lipstick – the UK site quotes it as being a metal luxe lipstick with an encrusted sparkling coat. No mention of colour shifting! Probably says more about the differences in our advertising standards (although I always get jealous of the US return policies and this explains why).
