Bite Beauty Opal Creme Lip Gloss Review, Photos, Swatches

Bite Beauty Opal Lip Gloss
Bite Beauty Opal Lip Gloss

Bite Beauty Opal Lip Gloss ($24.00 for 0.14 oz.) is described as an “ultraviolet” with an “opalescent shine.” It’s a very light, milky lavender-white base with lighter lavender and bluish-violet pearl. Marc Jacobs Beauty Pink Steam (322) (P, $28.00) is darker, warmer. Bite Beauty Four (Watercolor) (LE, ) is less shimmery, brighter, more pigmented. MAC Reckless Desire (LE, $15.00) is less shimmery. MAC Vacant (LE, $15.00) is more shimmery. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

The gloss is supposed to be “silky and nourishing” that can be “worn alone or on top of any lip color.” It had sheer coverage, and the milky quality of the base color tended to pull into lip lines for me, though the gloss itself seemed to go on evenly. The shimmer is noticeable when worn alone, and the gloss wore for almost three hours on me with light tackiness and had a sweet, fruity scent. I didn’t find the formula to be hydrating, but it wasn’t drying either. It worked applied over lipstick, but you have to be careful as it can cause the underlying lip color to pull into lip lines as well. For me, the effect of the gloss is subtler than the lipstick, and I didn’t like that it tended to lessen the performance of any lipstick I tried with it. When I layered the gloss over the coordinating lipstick, it added glossiness but didn’t seem to change much else to my eye.

I’m returning the Opal Lip Gloss. When worn alone, the opal sheen is very noticeable, but it has a bluish- white tone that clashes with my skintone and kind of washes me out, but others may find it beautiful. When worn over lipstick ( and I tried about 10 different ones), it added glossiness, but I agree, I usually couldn’t see the opal sheen that well or it completely disappeared. The opal sheen was more noticeable over very matte lipsticks, as glossier ones “watered down” the opal-ness so much it became invisible. I didn’t notice my lipsticks pulling away from my liplines. My best look was putting the gloss over the matte stain left behind from BITE Plum or BITE Barberry, then you can see the opal sheen “pop”, as the stain is dry so it doesn’t water down the sheen. So this might be a good one to put over various lipstains.

No worries Nicole, I understood what you meant. I googled Hypnotist, and that’s a very pretty one! Will have to check it out

It is pretty. The short wear is a downfall though. I tried out the Opal gloss today and such a pity! It’s so pretty at first over the lipsticks. I don’t like the way it causes the lipstick to settle in liplines. So, like you, I will be returning. Hopefully, Bite will see the sales/ returns patterns and bring the lipstick and Frozen Berries line permanent. I love all 3 lippies I got. It’s killing me trying to decide if I should splurge on a back up set! I was hoping to buy a second opal lipstick thinking that may be something nice to have around. Sold out today! I must have got one of the last ones last night. So glad I read your comments and Christine’s reviews!

Oh wow, Opal Lipstick is already sold out ?? Maybe Christine and I had something to do with it LOL So glad you were able to snag one before it’s gone!! I got a backup of Barberry, I think that will be the next one to sell out, as people love it. Yes, I do hope BITE makes these permanent. I hate falling in love with LE items (sigh)

Hi again Katherine! I just checked and the Opal lipstick was back up on Sephora’s site. So, after reading your comment I went ahead and ordered a backup of it and Barberry. I really am still fighting with myself on trying to decide if I should get a backup for Juniper and Plum too. I love them. Gosh, these are great. My lips are really chapped from being in the hospital and they look great with these on. I have a feeling I am going to be loving these. But, from experience, I don’t go through backups. I still have an xtra Urban Decay Full-Frontal lipstick stash. I loved those at first. Now, I occasionally use them! How do you decide on buying backups on LE items or not?

Katherine T. Avatar

Nicole, sounds like you are set! I rarely buy backups of LE items unless I really love it, and it’s really hard to dupe. Usually, I’ll google the internet for dupes or use the dupe feature under Temptalia. Barberry is my first LE backup lipstick- for me, it’s the perfect mix of berry/ purple/ pink, and I know that’s going to be hard to find. And I wear lipstick everyday, so I know I will evenutally use it up. But otherwise, I like to save my money for all the other new, shiny, pretty things that seem to be coming out daily 🙂

Nicole Avatar

Thanks for the tips Katherine. Your right. Probably don’t need backups of the other two as they are easier to dupe. I do have lipsticks that come close in my stash. But, this formula is probably one of my favorites in a while. But, I don’t wear lipstick every day. I may do a gloss or a balm sometimes. I agree,Burberry will be a hard one to dupe. So, I think the backup on that one is warranted. 🙂

I’m still not going to get the gloss, but putting it over a lip stain sounds like the perfect solution for someone who wants to keep theirs. Great tip!

I really love the Opal Lipstick version a whole lot better than the gloss counterpart. The gloss just doesn’t work for me if it messes with the lipstick I’d be wearing underneath by causing it to bunch up into any lip lines, so this is an easy pass.

Nicole Avatar

I’m really interested in the names too! I was really psyched about this gloss. But, it just seems like a regular clear gloss with every lipstick I try it with. For the price and the fact that I have several other clear glosses, I don’t think it’s worth keeping.

Rachel R. Avatar

I don’t like how this affects the lipstick’s texture. I also don’t think it shows up very well over the bright lipstick. It’s disappointing. I love opal finishes.

Nicole Avatar

I’m kinda bummed that this affects the lipstick underneath. I was planning to use it as a topper. I have it in a box since I ordered in my “pre-surgery” haul. It looks like it may be going back. Oh well, it’s not like I couldn’t find a bajillion other things to swap the $24 out for at Sephora on any given day! I mentioned in a reply to Katherine, that I own a gloss by Bare Minerals called “Hypnotist”. Its very similar to this concept and it looks lovely on it’s own or layered. I’m not sure if they still make it or not. I bought mine at Ulta. But worth checking out for those who are interested in this idea.
