Bite Beauty Matte Creme Lipstick

Bite Beauty Elderberry Matte Creme Lipstick ($24.00 for 0.15 oz.) is a deepened, burgundy with cool, purple-red undertones and a glossy sheen. It had semi-opaque coverage that applied poorly, as the color was uneven, patchy, and settled into lip lines. The texture had a lot of slip and some weight to it, which is why I think it just migrated to lip lines from the get-go. I had a little feathering after four hours of wear, though the color lasted closer to six and left behind a stain. It was lightly moisturizing over time. MAC Dramatic Encounter (LE, $16.00) is lighter. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Black Dahlia (P, $18.00) is lighter. Estee Lauder Brazen (P, $30.00) is lighter, less glossy. MAC Instigator (P, $16.00) is cooler, less glossy. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Anita (P, $18.00) is warmer. MAC Soulfully Rich (P, $18.00) is cooler, less glossy. MAC Prince Noir (LE, $16.00) is less glossy. Kat Von D Motorhead (P, $21.00) is lighter, less glossy. ColourPop Paramour (LE, $5.00) is less glossy. Bite Beauty Truffle (P, $24.00) is lighter. MAC Living Legend (LE, $16.00) is less glossy. Tom Ford Beauty Black Dahlia (10) (LE, $50.00) is lighter, less glossy. NARS Ingrid (P, $32.00) is lighter. NARS Liv (P, $32.00) is lighter, more muted. MAC Lingering Kiss (LE, $16.00) is lighter, less glossy. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Bite Beauty Juniper Matte Creme Lipstick ($24.00 for 0.15 oz.) is a brightened, pinky-red with subtle, warmer undertones and a satin finish. It had rich, opaque color coverage with a light-medium, creamy consistency that covered smoothly and evenly. There was creaminess but not too much slip, so this shade sat well on the lips without sliding around, and it lasted for seven hours without feathering. It was hydrating while worn. MAC Relentlessly Red (P, $16.00) is lighter, brighter, less glossy. MAC All Fired Up (P, $16.00) is lighter, brighter, less glossy. Urban Decay Catfight (P, $22.00) is lighter, brighter. Maybelline Vivid Rose (P, $7.49) is lighter, brighter, warmer. MAC Love Goddess (LE, $16.00) is lighter, brighter, warmer. MAC Petite Red (LE, $16.00) is lighter, brighter, less glossy. Tom Ford Beauty Leonardo (LE, $32.00) is cooler. Tom Ford Beauty Luciano (LE, $32.00) is lighter, brighter. MAC Damn Glamorous (LE, $16.00) is lighter, brighter, less glossy. Kat Von D Bachelorette (P, $21.00) is lighter, brighter, less glossy. Guerlain Rose Grenat (864) (LE, $51.00) is lighter, brighter. MAC Red Necessity (LE, $20.00) is lighter, brighter. Bite Beauty Crianza (P, $28.00) is lighter, brighter. Dior Minuit (LE, $36.00) is lighter, brighter. Maybelline All Fired Up (P, $7.99) is lighter, brighter, less glossy. Bite Beauty Plum Matte Creme Lipstick ($24.00 for 0.15 oz.) is a muted, medium-dark reddened plum with fine ruby shimmer and a natural finish. It had mostly opaque coverage, but the natural lip color will come through slightly. The finish is definitely not matte, and it had more slip than Juniper but less than Elderberry, so it applied without too much trouble and didn’t feather when worn. I noticed some color migrated into lip lines after three to four hours of wear, but the slip in the formula made it easy to smooth it back out by pressing and rubbing lips together. The color lasted for six hours overall and was lightly hydrating. Guerlain Orgueil (P, $49.50) is brighter. Make Up For Ever #13 (P, $19.00) is more shimmery, lighter. Inglot #293 Lipstick Cream (P, $12.00) is lighter, cooler, glossier. Estee Lauder Brazen (P, $30.00) is darker. Bite Beauty Bordeaux (P, $28.00) is glossier. Bite Beauty #001 (LE, $36.00) is warmer. Tom Ford Beauty Wes (LE, $32.00) is glossier. MAC The Scene (P, $23.00) is warmer. NARS Ingrid (P, $32.00) is darker, glossier. NARS Bette (P, $32.00) is warmer, glossier. Bite Beauty Black Cherry (P, $24.00) is darker, warmer, glossier. MAC Eugenie (LE, $16.00) is darker, less glossy. Maybelline Divine Wine (P, $7.99) is warmer. Bite Beauty #001 (Reformulation) (LE, $36.00) is warmer. Marc Jacobs Beauty Blow (210) (P, $30.00) is warmer. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

FORMULA SUMMARY | Bite Beauty Matte Creme Lipstick ($24.00 for 0.15 oz.) is supposed to leave a “velvet, soft focus finish” with “highly pigmented, moisturizing wearable color” that is also “longwearing.” If you’re not a fan of mattes, don’t fret, these aren’t really matte (and if you’re a fan of matte, you might want to keep looking). There are five shades, and all of them have a satin or glossier finish (two are pretty glossy). The glossier the shade, the more poorly it applied with streaky, uneven coverage that was prone to feathering along the edges of the natural lip, while the more satiny shades were more pigmented with more even application and longer, better wear. On me, I found the formula to be lightly to moderately hydrating with wear ranging between four and seven hours. The formula has a sweet, fruity scent but no discernible taste.

I think the color and finish of Juniper will be very flattering on a lot of people. It’s sure stunning on you, Christine! That satiny finish is as close to a “matte” as I’d ever be tempted by, personally. Because even though it’s not actually glossy, it still looks… healthy, I guess is the word I want.

I like Juniper! I missed out on Petite Red and was really bummed. So, I’m happy to read this is a dupe. I wish they were permanent though. Oh well, I’ll have to stalk Sephora’s site for them so I can try to snag a couple!

Kat Avatar

Darker vampy berry shades are so hard to get right! Juniper is nice, it might be like a more fall/winter appropriate version of my favorite Relentlessly Red, but I’m not sure if it’s worth shelling out the $$. I’ll definitely try to get my hands on Barberry, just since it’s so unique, and I’ve never tried a shade like that before.

Shame about Elderberry but it seems those colours are really hard to get right. Juniper and that purplish one you reviewed earlier (Barberry?) look really pretty though – I like the berry theme of this collection.

Katie Avatar

All of the colors in this collection are gorgeous (disappointed in the performance of Elderberry though). But I am so weirded out that they seem to be separating or something in the tube!

Christine Avatar

I don’t think they are separating, because the bullets look perfectly shaped/intact, so it seems like there was something in the component itself prior to the lipstick going in, but I’m not sure. Mine are press samples, so they could be from a smaller run.

I bought Elderberry on a whim without looking at any reviews. I don’t know what the lippie looked like before I got it home and opened the package, but it was goopy and sweaty just like these pictures. I waited a few days to see if it would dry up, but no it has not. I’ll be returning it and picking up UD Blackmail in its place. I just can’t get over the grossness of the sweat. It reminds me of fungus. Nope.

Juniper, Plum and Barberry are highest on my wish list right now. I love the darker colours, but I feel I have closer dupes for them, so I can pass, especially if the formula isn’t as good. I also noticed that Bite is doing a Canadian-exclusive collection of shades of red. I’m really just going to have to show up with fistfuls of money…

xamyx Avatar

I like all of them (except Juniper), but I just went on a “vampy” lip splurge today, LOL! ULTA had NYX on sale at 40% off, AND all of the Simply Vamp shades actually in-stock, plus a few others…

Lotus Avatar

Sorry but nothing beats Black Dahlia & the Rouge D’Armani’s I have.. But for those who have luck with Bite Beauty, I don’t like the feathering, these all look promising and I hope they are enjoyed! 🙂

Veronica Avatar

Plum is gorgeous. Elderberry makes me sad. All the Monty Python jokes that could be made with a better performing shade. 🙁

Kecia S. Avatar

Juniper is GORGEOUS! Christine, I LOVE your blog, but you’re sooooooo bad for my wallet…especially since I have MINIMAL (& that’s being super generous) willpower. LOL!

Bunny Avatar

I wonder if we’re getting these here in Canada too, I know we’re getting the Maple Matte collection but I love berry shades just as much!

Sasha Avatar

Interesting that “Elderberry” has that smeary quality. Didn’t apply that way on Sissi’s first impression/swatch video, though.
