Best Face Mask for Your Skin Type
What's the Best Face Mask for Your Skin Type that you've tried?
I have normal-to-dry skin. I like Fresh’s for hydrating, as my skin always feel better, and I never worry about it irritating if left on too long. A little goes a long way, too! I’ve been really slacking on wearing/using masks in the last year or so.
Thanks to SJanet for today’s topic!

My absolute favorite is Albertini International’s warm love pumpkin mask. I use it once a week and it makes my face feel amazing. I have dry, sensitive skin and it doesn’t cause any irritation, dryness, or redness like a lot of masks do.
I’m not one for masks and rely on my regular aggressive anti-aging program…but.. if I want a special glow for a special occassion, I do have a one-two punch pre-game program in my arsenal. In the morning of the special event:
1. Sisley Black Rose cream mask
2. Usual skincare, but add a healthy dose of SkinMedica Hydrating complex
Killer glow.
I love the Fresh Rose one, too. I actually use it every morning instead of washing my face, because it’s so dry. It does only take a little!
*When my skin gets dry or irritated, I like Glamglow’s ThirstyMud, very soothing and hydrating, and nice coconut smell.
*If my pores are clogged, I take a warm shower to open them up, then I dilute some Neutrogena Clear Body Wash (in pink grapefruit with 2% salicyclic acid), leave it on as a paste for few minutes, then rinse. Afterwards, my pores feel like they’ve been steam cleaned, pimples averted.
I have normal to oily skin. I use Glo Therapeutics Pumpkin Enzyme Scrub once every week or 2 weeks (leave it on for 10 minutes and then massage/gently scrub while rinsing off), and I use Majestic Pure’s Dead Sea Mud Mask about 2 times a week. I like the facial fiber mask things (the face cut outs that already are soaked in the mask liquid in the package) also and use them once a week or so.
The best one I ever tried has to be GlamGlow Mud in the dark gray packaging. I received it as a generous sized deluxe sized sample, got around 5-6 uses out of it. Made my face look much firmer, tightened up my pores, and gave my face a beautiful radiance!
Oh ho ho face masks are my jam. I can’t do too many beauty things anymore because of the health stuff, but I can still do face masks so I do one at least once a week and have gotten to know quite a few.
My skin type is dry and pretty sensitive courtesy of some early-stage Rosacea that I am careful not to exacerbate. But, I also have anxiety issues so I sweat a lot (ew, I know) so my face doesn’t get oily per-se, but it does get some clogged pores and need regular exfoliation.
I have a few masks I rotate depending on what my skin needs most a the time. First off, I tend to use a microdermabrasion product if I need to sluff off some skin prior to a mask. The one I use is The Body Shop’s Vitamin C one, which is as good as the Dr. Brandt one and waaaay cheaper.
If I need to massively rehydrate my skin, I got for one of two products, both from The Body Shop (I have a lot of their masks). If I’m doing an overnight one, I go for their Bouncy Sleeping Mask. If I need a 5-10 minute one, I go for their Aloe Protective Restoring Mask, and if I’m just around the house for the day I use a smaller amount of the Aloe one as my moisturizer and just leave it on all day. I’m also a fan of the Peter Thomas Roth Cucumber Gel Mask, especially if I also need to calm my skin down as I keep it in the fridge.
If I need a gentle chemical exfoliator, I go for the Peter Thomas Roth Pumpkin Enzyme Mask, but as I have sensitive skin I keep it on for the lower range of the recommended time, and I follow it up with a hydrating mask from the above section, or the Kiehl’s Rose Arctica Moisturizer.
If I need to do a deep cleanout of my skin, I either go for the Aesop Parsley Seed Mask, the Lush Brazened Honey Fresh Face Mask, or the Peter Thomas Roth Irish Moor Mud Purifying Black Mask, followed once again by some heavy duty moisturizing.
If I need to tighten things up I go for the Peter Thomas Roth Rose Stem Cell Bio-Repair Mask.
I rarely get anything other than hormonal acne which tends to go away quickly with a touch of Mario Badescu Drying Lotion, but for the rare occasion I get breakouts, I go for either The Body Shop’s Tea Tree Oil Face Mask, or the Origins Charcoal one, followed by a decent but not overly heavy moisturizer.
That’s the LONG rundown, and I have several others I use on occasion, but those ones are my standard roster (which is ridiculous, but my skin looks great even though my body is falling apart which is nice).
Also if anyone needs any mask recommendations, I am my friends and family’s mask guru so feel free to ask away as I’m good with a lot of different skin types.
Wow, lots of great recs in there! You are definitely the mask guru. I’m keeping this list handy , definitely getting that Aloe Protective Restoring Mask, sounds right up my alley.
Thanks for the long list. My skin is slightly on the dry side, aging, and I have mild rosacea. I love your list – I love masks too.
I have very sensitive combo (so oily and dry patches) acne prone skin. This means I can’t wear heavy face creams overnight but a 15 minute hydrating mask that I can wash off works. I like First Aid Beauty. I’m prone to irritation from scents but this oatmeal mask feels soothing and smells like cookies. Oatmeal in skincare just seems to work well for my skin in general. I apply the mask on clean damp skin (sometimes I spritz on laura mercier’s face mist first before masking) and apply on the dry areas (though I make sure to moisturize any un-masked oily-prone areas with Cerave lotion so those areas won’t dry out).
I have oily, dehydrated, and somewhat sensitive skin, so I go for two masks in quick succession. If I accidentally fell asleep in makeup or at least once a week, I double cleanse, tone, and then I use the Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque for about 10 minutes (or until it dries, whichever comes first). Then I rinse it off, tone again, and use a sheet mask. My favorite is the My Scheming Bulgarian Rose Whitening Mask, because they fit my face perfectly, smell soothing but are not overpowering, always calm my skin and any redness/puffyness right down, and take forever to dry (I leave them on my face for an hour and they’re still saturated with serum). They are super hydrating and I could go on all day about them. I keep them in the fridge for maximum soothing power.
I have dry skin. I am finding sheet masks to be the more effective solution. Though, I like a sleeping mask for winter too. My go to sheet mask has bee the Tony Moly Age-Defying Snail Hydro gel face sheet mask. Although, I think I am going to try the Tatcha mask I bought and have been saving tonight. Hoping I don’t fall in love because it is $28 ( for one)! My go to sleeping mask is Amore Pacific Moisture bound sleeping mask.
I totally have slacked on masks lately too! But, I feel better when I do them and I think it looks better. 🙂
I just looked this product up (the snail goo) and think I will to give it a go. It sounds like a great mask for winter; that is, if winter ever shows up here. Thank you for not choosing one of the 75 dollars US (gasp) options. I’m so jaded, I look at these one time use products and immediately think these skincare dudes are onto a very lucrative concept aka cash grab.
I agree with the super expensive masks totally being a rip off! I was hooked on SK-II ‘s sheet mask for a bit. $17 for one. The SA in Sephora showed me this one. I like it better. Just be careful when getting it out of the package and un folding. Super slimy! Its in 2 pieces as well and it slides a bit on your face. If your anything like me , you may have to make yourself chill for this one. I usually just keep readjusting a bit. Hope you like it!
I use a very gentle, hydrating mask from QV – an Australian brand. It works really well and I use it about once a month. I use a gentle scrub once a week.
Clinique Acne Solutions Oil Clearing Mask is awesome on my sensitive, oily skin. I use it about once a week and it makes my skin feel smooth and tight and clean … it really mops up all the oil.
Queen Helene’s mint julep mask. I don’t usually keep acne treatments around, so the mask is my go-to when my pores aren’t looking too cute.
I don’t fuss around with masks a lot, I just use sheet masks from Korean brands. Leaders Insolution is my favorite as of now. I just leave on the mask for a few minutes. The excess essence in the pouch, I transfer to a small pot and then pop in the fridge. I use it to replace my night time moisturiser, it lasts about a week. Last night I tried doing Queen Helene’s Mint Julep first before the sheet mask, and so far so good.
I have oily-combination skin btw.
I have aging, sensitive, oily skin that goes through bouts of being combination (oily T-zone, normal or slightly dry cheeks). I get sometimes get hormonal acne and cystic acne sometimes. I like NuSkin Epoch Glacial Marine Mud. It get out the impurities and helps control oiliness without being overly harsh, drying or exfoliating.
If I’m feeling spotty and have congested skin around my period, I use a mud mask (any will do). If my face’s feeling dry or dehydrated, I’ll use a sheet mask, my favourite at the moment is When’s Travelmate sheet mask. It’s so good for my skin that my dehydration lines disappear! Even my fiancé said I looked different after using it!
I have an oily, acne-prone, with mild hyperpigmentation skin and most of my face masks are homemade, but I do use a few store-bought items.
HOMEMADE: they’re simple concoctions that leaves my skin hydrated, baby soft, and acne-free.
• Honey and cinnamon mask
• Honey and [raw and freshly blended] aloe vera juice mask (my summer routine)
• Ground oatmeal and water mask (weekly routine)
STORE-BOUGHT:
• Freeman Avocado and Oatmeal Facial Clay Mask (love this stuff!)
• Freeman Cucumber Peel-Off Mask
SHEET MASKS: also homemade and simple (compressed sheet masks soaked in a solution)
• Solution: either “aloe vera juice” or “Estée Lauder ‘Micro Essence’ Skin Activating Treatment Lotion”
â—‹ Aloe Vera Juice sheet mask + my skin = love and nourishment
â—‹ EL’s Micro Essence Treatment Lotion sheet masks gives me glowing skin
That’s my extent of face masks.
I really would love to try GLAM GLOW. I’ve always heard so much buzz about it.
I adore The Face Shop’s Real Nature Mask Sheet Olive! I have combination sensitive skin and it really hydrates my face, giving me a nice glow for 1-2 days after. I usually use it when my skin looks tired, dry or just doesn’t want to cooperate. The avocado one is also pretty good but not as great as the olive one imo.
I have oily, blemish-prone skin and while I have a good daily skincare regimen that I dont really think masks can improve a lot, I sometimes do a simple bentonite clay mask (just water and clay, sometimes with a few drops of toner) to clarify. I also did the clay mask bootcamp as recommended by Veronica Gorgeois (love her YouTube channel!) and it definitely improved my skin a lot.
I have combination skin that can get oily on T-zone and normal to dry for the rest of my face.
1. I always used Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask or Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Overnight Hydrating Mask when my face get drier.
2. when I need to detox or want to be deep clean my face but still gentle and don’t dry my skin afterward I’ll used Origins Original Skin Retexturizing Rose Clay Mask
3. for stubborn acne and blackheads,Pure Body Naturals Dead Sea Mud Mask is my beast friend.I bought it from Amazon
The only mask I own is Paula’s Choice Skin Recovery Hydrating Treatment Mask. I treat it a little like a moisturizer and leave it on all night, every night, but I can only us it at night because it doesn’t sink into my skin enough to put makeup over it (or even sunscreen). I’ve considered trying others since needing moisture is a problem for me, but this one works well enough that I haven’t bothered.
I use The Body Shop Drops of Youth Bouncy mask too. I also love The Gold Radiance gel mask – got rid of redness – very anti-aging. I like the Boscia black mask if I need to clean my pores. I also use a Korean sleep mask by Cosrx called Ultimate Nourishing Rice Overnight Spa Mask. Among other things it has niacinamide and fades spots, bit it is very soothing.
I’m a big lover of Fresh masks. I’m loving the Korean sheet masks I get from H Mart too. Caudalie has a mask set I’d like to get my hands on too.
My skin is combination oily as well as aging, and I love the REN Radiance renewal mask for texture issues and to get back the glow.
Dry, sensitive, and very breakout prone, and I live by the Hada Labo Tokyo sheet masks. I stock up on them when there are sales and coupons.
