Becca Topaz Shimmering Skin Perfector (Original/Liquid) Review, Photos, Swatches
Becca Topaz Shimmering Skin Perfector (Original/Liquid)
Becca Topaz Shimmering Skin Perfector (Original/Liquid) ($41.00 for 1.7 fl. oz.) is described as a “golden bronze pearl.” It’s a muted, medium-dark coppery-brown with very fine, lighter gold shimmer. Giorgio Armani #100 (LE, $64.00) is warmer. MAC Golden Elixir (LE, $31.00) is slightly less golden. Tom Ford Beauty Bronzed Amber (LE, $58.00) is darker, redder. Becca Topaz (Poured) (P, $38.00) is more shimmery. Becca Topaz (Pressed) (P, $38.00) is more shimmery. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
The original Shimmering Skin Perfectors come in tubes with a pump dispenser, and the formula is a “sheer cream-liquid” for “subtle luminosity” with a “water-light” feel. For how it compares to the other formulations in the family, please see this post. The texture is thin, water-like (but not quite as thin as true water) that can be used over or under foundation, on bare skin, or mixed with your favorite base products (moisturizer, primer, foundation). It takes a bit of time to dry down if patted on top of cheek bones or the like as a more targeted highlighter than all-over. It is as sheer as described: this is not going to yield a lot of color or shimmer, which is in line with how it is marketed, just that it might not be what you’re looking for. I prefer mixing this in with moisturizer or liquid foundation for an all-over luminosity that’s never too dewy or oily. I get a very subtle warmth when I mix Topaz in with my foundation, and I’d expect it might be greater for fairer skin tones but any color change will likely be lost on deeper skin tones. On the other side, it won’t lighten-up deeper foundations, so it’s a great way for darker skin tones to get an all-over glow that won’t give a lighter or off-white cast. When patted on cheek bones (and a bit lower, since it does give me some color) as a more traditional highlighter, it is more of a bronzing illuminator on my skin tone, and it lasts for eight hours on me. When mixed with foundation, it doesn’t seem to shorten or extend the wear of my foundation. The only downside is that due to the pump dispenser, it is easy to get far more product than you want if you aren’t mixing or using it all-over.

I like that it won’t lighten up foundations and such, it looks so lovely, I’m going to have a hard time choosing between this and the poured version.
How do you think you’ll want to use it, Aj? Mixed or as a traditional highlighter?
Traditional most of the time. I’ll probably mix it in on the days when I feel my skin looks dull all over.
I’d probably go with the Poured/Pressed, you’ll get more color out of it, IMO.
Why can’t they make a highlighter without mineral oil? Even their powder products has it. I would really like to try them, but I refuse to put that on my ultra sensitive skin. I’ll stick with my Giella E M Glam.
As long as you have something that works for you! 🙂
Too dark for me, but this adds a nice summer glow to your face,
Thank you as always, Katherine!
This is beautifu!!! Christine, do you find this moisturizing?
I haven’t noticed, but I don’t use it as a moisturizer – my regular moisturizer does the hydration part 🙂 I don’t think I would be able to tell unless my regular moisturizer was dropping the ball!
Hi Gilbert, I have really dry skin, and I use this everyday over my moisturizer, I find that it “seals” the moisture underneath, if that makes sense. I then put my foundation on top. My skin feels comfortable and hydrated all day!
SOOOOO pretty! Did you dab it on your cheeks with your fingers for this picture? I just bought the Best of Becca set from Ulta and after reading your reviews, I can’t wait to play with everything!
Yes, I did!
Are you supposed to be darker or lighter than this product? I feel like this is kinda advanced for me.
Really depends on what you’re looking for!
It gives you such a beautiful warm glow 🙂 I have a foundation that just seems a tad too light, do you think if I mix it together it would give my base more warmed and luminosity? (for reference I’m nc25)
It’ll give you a little warmth, but I don’t think it’s going to be enough to actually darken your foundation by more than maybe 10-15% of a shade!
This looks like it would be lovely with a tan 🙂
I bet!
Very pretty. Way too dark for me but I bet this is stunning on really dark skin too!
It is!
I really wanted to buy this, but I’m not 100% comfortable with some ingredients like alcohol denat and perfume in this. They’re probably in such minute amounts as to not be harmful, but I like to steer clear. I’m using Benefit Sun Beam right now, though I haven’t thoroughly checked over it’s ingredients yet. I’m really liking this whole dewy glow thing! I never tried it before…. Feel so glam, lol!
Hopefully you can find a good alternative!
This looks really similar to the Becca Bronzing Skin Perfector! I wonder how they compare, and why someone should purchase one over the other. I would really like to see swatches of them side by side.
Sorry, I don’t have that!
I was swatching these at Ulta the other day during a hair appointment. I really liked the consistency of the product, and ivory shade is the perfect “natural glow” look for we NW10/15 folk. I found the rest to be a little too dark and warm for fair skin, particularly the powder line.
Glad you had a chance to play a bit, Veronica!
We can never see your pores. Like, ever. Until today I didn’t think you had any pores. But now I can see them. So if this makes your pores show up, it will make mine look like moon craters…
I have normal-sized pores, I would say – this doesn’t smooth them out, but it doesn’t emphasize them 🙂
This definitely seems like it’s better for mixing into moisturizers and such. Which is exactly what I’m into right now for a soft, feminine all over glow. I just might need this
Yes, I like it best for mixing!
This is just the effect I was hoping for ! I am also hoping mine is in one of the boxes that came to my door today. Idk what is going on with UPS here lately or Sephora. But, that 2-day Flash thing is not happening! I ordered this last week and it just arrived today ( hopefully!). I tried this with Nars Laguna and it looked too brown and shimmery. Yeah! 🙂
Fingers crossed!
I love these! I use the one in opal under my Nars Sheer Glow foundation, it helps my dry skin look perfected and moisturized!
Awesome, Karen!
Christine, how does this compare to theBalm’s Betty Lou Manizer? I have Betty Lou and have been trying to justify Topaz, but not if they’re identical, haha.
They’re really different products – you’re trying to compare a sheer product to an intensely pigmented one, so I don’t think you’re going to get the same effect!
