bareMinerals I Love the Night Life Eyeliner Set
bareMinerals I Love the Night Life Eyeliner Set ($29.00 for 0.06 oz.) includes five shades of the brand’s Lasting Line Long-Wearing Eye Liner. As was the case with Afternoon Delights, it’s a frustrating formula to use, as the consistency is very dry and stiff. It drags and pulls at the skin, so the pigmentation suffers a lot, and even when you attempt to layer, the color is often uneven.
True Blue is a medium-dark blue with a pearly sheen. It had sheer color payoff in one stroke, and it wasn’t buildable to much more than semi-opaque, as the drier consistency made it hard to layer. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Constant Copper is a warm-toned, bronze brown with a pearly finish. It had semi-sheer color coverage in one pass, and it never built up more than that as it was very stiff. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Absolute Black is a medium-dark, neutral black with a satin-matte finish. Again, the formula yielded sheer color payoff paired with a really dry, stiff consistency made it difficult to apply. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Certainly Sterling is a brightened silver with a metallic sheen. It had semi-sheer color payoff, and it was a little creamier compared to the other shades, though it was still quite dry. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
Steadfast Slate is a medium gray-black with silver shimmer and sparkle. It had sheer pigmentation in one stroke, and I really couldn’t get it to build to more than semi-sheer–and it was incredibly uneven. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

🙁 What about the Smashbox set? They look similar as pens, but these are deplorable! I’m curious about Smashbox although they didn’t include the color that makes it a buy for me! 🙂
I don’t have the Smashbox set, sorry!
Yiiiiiiiiiiikes.
I’d been considering this, but after swatching in store I couldn’t bring myself to pull the trigger. I am REALLY glad that I held off! Shame too, because the blue color is pretty!
They’re SO stiff!
Oh, double ouch!
Shame on you bareMinerals! Just looking at the pens, both these and the other set, the colours would be very pretty.
I’m going to try to get the Sephora set.
Thanks for always writing honest, in this case brutally honest, reviews. 😀
No prob, Helene!
Shameful!
Agreed!
I got the big set that was available on QVC when it was on deal and auto payment. I was really disappointed as I normally love BareMinerals. I guess I’ll just use them on my bottom lashline when I need very light lining. Having to go back and forth is kind of a bummer.
Bummer! 🙁
Ouch! Every time I see that F I cringe a little. Looking at the swatches makes me ask that eternal question of don’t these brand test these products before releasing them? Yuck!
They’re rough to swatch, let alone when you apply them to the lash line, so I don’t know how it happened!
Well, at least they are consist ant.
True enough!
Oh dear….F’s all ’round, for both sets??? What were they thinking? Why on earth wouldn’t they just repromote that fabulous 5 AM (which I was never able to get but which had me hyperventilating at how beautiful it was) and then they’d have a total winner on their hands! What gives with these companies???
The two formulas are like night and day… seriously, why they’d go from THAT to this? I don’t know.
Such a pity that these are poor quality – I was tempted by the shades and the range. Boo.
They had potential from the promo images, but that’s about it 🙁
I agree that the pigmentation isn’t top notch, however the colors have potential to be really beautiful!
If it was just sheerer color that had to be layered, at least it would be workable, but the consistency was the major problem!
well dang i might as well just go buy a box of crayola crayons instead
More useful than these 🙁
Ouch. Those swatches look terrible
Right? 🙁
Thanks! I’m passing on these now. I was going to pick up one or two.
No prob, Valerie!
Wow, don’t think I’ve seen so many F’s. The swatches look terrible. I’ve read other reviews and they were bad, too. Why bother putting out such a poor set? They should stick with their lip glosses and mineral foundations.
It is funny, but when you see that a product has a 2-3 overall rating on a major retailer… you know it’s not good, because usually reviews on retailers are more… optimistic, I would say.
How weird!!! Especially since I love Buxom pencils–I almost sprung for these! Well as much as a disappointment as these are I’m glad you reviewed these Christine. My wallet thanks you!
Really loved their Round the Clock formula 🙁 Can’t believe this replaced it!
This has nothing to do with this post so I am sorry for that but if I have Mary Lou manizer from the balm do you think I need becca moonstone pressed?? Or is there one you think is better for fair skin ?? 🙂
Moonstone is less yellow, so it might be better for fairer skin.
How bad is this? Surely BM should realise by now that their products are going to be reviewed, these pencils really tests the integrity of their product and quality control testing. How painful for you to test them!
They were such sad eyeliners!
Oh, dear… Glad I wasn’t going to get these. They look and sound painful.
Some of the worst I’ve used for sure.
Eyeliners of this type always drag/skip across my lids. I can never get them to ‘glide’ on and it causes it to be uneven and splotchy and blech. That’s why I stick to liquid liners. I’ve purchased SO many eyeliners like the above because they look beautiful and I always end up disappointed.
I’ll say that these are probably even worse, because I don’t have issues with most pencil eyeliners (mechanical or not), so I can only imagine these would be even worse for you!
-_- What is even happening with these.
I wish I knew!
thank you for reviewing this. I saw these sets online & even thought the name was cute but I’ve never owned or tried any of their liners so was on the fence about getting them. Too bad, it would have been nice to have another brand of good liners.
No problem, Mimi 🙂
Oh god.. cringing. These are horrible :/
They were quite disappointing!
*whimper*
So…many..Fs… so little pigmentation…*averts eyes*
O_o
My eyelids are twitching in sympathy right now…
LOL!
I always visibly cringe when I see you give something an F! You’re so fair in your ratings that I don’t doubt it and I think that’s why I cringe, lol.
That being said, BM seems to be the epitome of a hit or miss brand. All their “ready” stuff seems to be really great quality while the rest of it is pretty bad. But then NARS and Kat Von D can be kind of the same way. I wouldn’t have bought these anyway, I just had to see why when I saw they got an F!
They used to have such a great eyeliner formula… can’t fathom why they replaced it with this one.
Aaand more F’s, ugh! 🙁
Sad times!
Seriously???!! How does a company that puts out such great products usually, let this get out??? Someone dropped the ball here majorly. I REALLY hope no one buys these sets to make it clear to the companies that we are NOT willing to pay for poor quality items simply because they have a big name on them. ehem, MAC…..
Like just the texture… I don’t know how it was tested and let through.
Thank you Christina for your amazing blog post 24/7. I’ve been a huge fan, and I log onto your page everyday. I’ve never written a comment… But after a few years of reading your blog, I’ve rarely seen “Fs”…. this definitely must be really really bad! 🙁
bad… my typo… Christine!! I meant to type … sorry!
My pleasure, Grace! 🙂
Happy first comment!
Can’t make a decent black eyeliner? Go home, bareMinerals, you’re drunk.
Well-said 😉
aww these just look disappointing.. i think i’ll just stick to stila and ud liners.
this does not surprise me. i just checked my sephora order history to be sure. i ordered buxom armed and dangerous set holiday 2011 and they were so awful i just threw them away. it was a kit of 3 double ended big twist up eye pencils and a smudge brush. i still have the brush… there were pigment issues, the pencils were crumbly, a couple of them broke off from the twist up base. i’m very suspicious of their sets now.
