Anastasia Vintage Liquid Lipstick

Anastasia Vintage Liquid Lipstick ($20.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is described as a “royal purple.” It’s a medium-dark, eggplant purple with warm pink undertones and a matte finish. ColourPop Grind (P, $5.00) is brighter, purpler. Kat Von D L.U.V. (P, $19.00) is lighter, pinker. Kat Von D L.U.V. (P, $21.00) is lighter. MAC Punk Couture (LE, $16.00) is darker, less matte. MAC RiRi Boy (LE, $16.00) is lighter. MAC Up the Amp (P, $16.00) is lighter. MAC Heroine (P, $16.00) is brighter, less matte. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

It had mostly opaque color coverage, though it isn’t fully pigmented and there’s a sheerness to it, so if you have naturally redder lips, I’d expect this to look less purple on. It had an almost two-tone aspect to it, as parts of it looked pinker and other parts looked purpler, and this was especially noticeable along the edges. The texture is thin, watery initially but dries down and adheres to the lips. You’ll want to be careful while waiting for it to dry down, as it gets tackier and tackier while it sets, so if you touch your lips together while it is drying, you’ll lift the color off in sections. Once dry, it’s nearly transfer-proof for me, and I don’t have any issues drinking coffee with this on. It will make it through most of a meal, but it will depend on how much oil is in your meal. On me, the color wears for six hours, but it is moderately drying and gets uncomfortable to wear after three hours of wear for me.

A very pretty and fairly rare color, the formula sounds drying and is very matte. I will check out Colour Pop in Grind, it’s a fraction of the price and has a sheen to it

You’re not the first beauty blogger I’ve seen say this about Lime Crime. I’ve seen this said so often, I won’t buy their products (even though I love the unicorn packaging & colors).

Hi Christine, I love your blog and your reviews! I really trust your opinion, so Im just curious: why you dont support Lime Crime? I dont have any product from the brand, I just would like to know.

Wow! I am glad you divulged that info! I do have some of he Velvetines . I can say overall, I personally am not happy with the way they do business. (Constantly running out of stock of permanent products and it took 4 weeks for me to get the Velvetines I did order). Wow, that is very childish of them to act that way! They just lost my future business!

Mari Avatar

Wow! Thats really badl! Glad to hear that, I’m not going to buy their products! You are so professional, It’s a shame that they act like that… Xoxo

Christine, how do you prevent these kinds of liquid lipsticks from getting dry and flaky throughout the day? I moisturize my lips intensely, but it seems that liquid lipsticks almost always seem to crumble off, starting at the center of my lips (the Stila liquid lipsticks are the biggest culprit).

Christine Avatar

Hi Jaune,

I don’t do anything, since I just test the product as-is, no primers, bases, lip balm, etc. I didn’t have any issues with this shade flaking off my lips, though! It can depend on the formula as some formulas are better/worse! Liquid lipsticks are, in general, going to feel dry/clingy, unfortunately!

It is very matte huh? I love the bold color but am not sure I can deal with the drying aspect after a few hours of wear. The (almost) transfer-proof thing has me curious, though! I don’t think I’ve ever come across a lip product that doesn’t transfer! 🙂

Sometimes, but I don’t like anything that is very drying and uncomfortable to wear early on. I personally can handle a product that gets drying after 6+ hours of wear, but if it’s uncomfortable after three or four, then it’s not a product I’d personally wear.

I refused to fall for the hype on these after my daughter ordered a few and I saw the ingredients list. I’m trying to retain moisture in my lips, not lose it. Reading your reviews on these Christine makes my lips hurt. Thank you for taking in all the abuse for us beauty addicts.

I just purchased four of these (Carina, Lovely, Retro Coral, and Sad Girl) and absolutely love them. While the texture is strange at first, I wouldn’t call it uncomfortable. Yes, it feels dry but wasn’t actually drying. When I removed my lips were not flakey or dry at all. I wore Carina for a 12 hour shift at work and only had to reapply once.

Emily Avatar

I had high hopes for these liquid lipsticks and really wanted to like them. So I bought this one and Sad girl, but when I opened them, they smelled like really harsh chemicals and burned my lips when I tried them on. Did anyone else have this problem?? 🙁

This had been in my pile of 3 that I am waivering on sending back because I love the shades(along with Carina and Sweet Talker). Overall, I am for sure sending at least 10 of the 18 I bought back. Those are the ones that did not even make it more than 2 hours. I really can’t tolerate any of them more than 4 hours in the dry weather we are having. Part of me says to send them all back. The other part blames it on the weather and the fact that I so badly wanted to believe the hype these came with. How is the weather where you live Christine? Not even American Doll can I tolerate more than 3-4 hours..they leave my lips feeling macerated! Do you think the weather in spring /summer will make that much of a difference?

Christine,

How do you feel about liquid lipsticks in general?

I have not tried these, the Kat Von D ones, or Lime Crime.

However, I have a set of the makeup forever Aqua Rouges. perhaps i havent mastered the application, but I feel like it would also stick and lift color off or just look dry. I am still experimenting and I don’t wear them long enough maybe to figure this out.

I feel like in general, liquid lipsticks just set in an unflattering manner that shows all your lip lines and looks dry. The aqua rouges have a clear gloss that helps.

What are your thoughts? I feel like expectations exceed the available technology.

Christine Avatar

If you don’t like Aqua Rouge, you probably won’t like these. They’re similar, but they’re a little easier to apply, IMO. I also think they look better – I’ve always had a tough time getting Aqua Rouges to not look horrible in photos (even when they look decent in real life, they just look worse than they are in photos).

You might like formulas such as Giorgio Armani Maestro, NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams, etc. that don’t have such a severe dry down.

markiebamboo Avatar

Thank you so much!

I am still playing with the aqua rouges but I have no plans on buying these again. The set was a great buy to begin with and I got it on sale from the discounted price. I paid 90ish for 6 pencils and 6 aqua rouges. The pencils are nice.

Thanks for the suggestions!

the colour is beautiful but it looks so drying on the lips. does it get so dry that the lipstick cracks when you smile? that’s always been my beef with liquid lipsticks. i prefer formulas similar to bourjois rouge edition velvet liquid lipsticks and the nyx matte lip creams, which tend to be more forgiving on the lips.

I have this shade plus Lovely and Sad Girl. I love them all but I wear this one the most. I was able to wear vintage for 10 hours without touching up once. Granted, at the end of the day it wasn’t looking perfect, but I didn’t cringe while looking at it in the mirror either. There is a slight tackiness that doesn’t fully go away, but I got used to it. I find these to be way less drying than the one Lime Crime velvetine I own. In fact, I put a little EOS underneath and it’s not drying on me at all. Olive oil on a cotton ball takes them right off.
