Anastasia Pure Hollywood Liquid Lipstick Review, Photos, Swatches

Anastasia Pure Hollywood Liquid Lipstick
Anastasia Pure Hollywood Liquid Lipstick

Anastasia Pure Hollywood Liquid Lipstick ($20.00 for 0.11 fl. oz.) is a light-medium peach with a hint of pink and an ultra matte finish. ColourPop Button (P, $5.00) is darker, pinker. Bite Beauty Leche (P, $24.00) is less matte, pinker. Bite Beauty Amaretto (P, $24.00) is darker, less matte. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lament (P, $18.00) is lighter, less matte. MAC Riot House (LE, $16.00) is much lighter. Too Faced Melted Nude (P, $21.00) is slightly darker, less pink. Givenchy Beige Mousseline (101) (P, $36.00) is darker, less matte. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

The Liquid Lipstick formula is supposed to have “full coverage” with a “matte finish” that will last “all day.” It’s very pigmented, yet it’s a shade that goes on unevenly with visible streaks initially and seems almost watery when applied. Luckily, it seems to self-level so that as it dries down, the unevenness disappears (so I would recommend not fussing with making it appears perfectly even while it is wet). As it is drying down, it gets very tacky, and you’ll want to ensure you don’t press your lips together while it is drying down, or else color will lift. The consistency is more unforgiving in this lighter shade than American Doll, and it immediately started to pull into lip lines. This only worsened as the color wore on, even though it had minimal transfer on my coffee cup, but it looked settled and made my lips look cracked after a mere two hours. It was very drying, and it was extremely difficult to wear it past five hours–my lips felt so parched that they hurt.

Finally your reviews on these liquid lipsticks. I always come to read what you have to say about products coz I trust your honesty.
I read many others reviews and they all said that they didn’t feel their lips dry but in their pictures it looks like a Lip Balm Emergency. That plus that most of them were so retouched that I do not know what to believe.

Hope you bring more reviews on the rest of the shades, might be some that do not look/feel dry.
Will you try the Jeffree Star liquid lipsticks? I heard the formula is better

I purchased this color along with lovely a couple weeks ago with claims it would be flattering for every skin tone. I have never been more disappointed! 🙁 The wear was a little uncomfortable in comparison to KID’S everlasting liquid lipsticks. The color was so unflattering. I should have grabbed American Doll!

Alex Avatar

Yeah, I got so into the hype I bought Retro Coral when they first came out and returned it two days later since it dried my lips out so bad! I’m glad I’m not the only one who wasn’t a big fan of these, pretty as they are.

Autumn Avatar

Everybody loves this color! It’s all over IG and Twitter. Never thought you’d give a C- to this (probably going to become) cult favorite. I know that when I wear it, I usually have to stick some NYX lipgloss over it because it dries my lips so much. don’t have to do that with the color “Lovely”, come to think of it. Thanks for the review!

Antonia Avatar

Ah, I really wanted to get this one but I think I’ll pass after seeing this! Definitely don’t want my lips hurting from lipstick. Thanks for saving me $20 🙂 Will you be reviewing the shade Lovely? That’s the other one I had my eye on!

Autumn Avatar

I bought the color lovely and pure Hollywood. I definitely reach for the lovely more than the PH. It’s not as dry and it lasts so long. I only have to touch it up once or twice a day. And even then, not that much. Definitely worth the buy!! It’s such a pretty medium pink every day color.

Aamina Avatar

Thanks for the review. Have been holding out buying these because I felt that they were too good to be true. I love ABH as a brand but I feel that a lot of people jump onto the bandwagon because they feel that it may benefit them in the industry. I’d be all over these if they were comfortable. Really wish they were as I like the colours they’ve released. Hope some of the others get better reviews from you! Hope your lips don’t get wrecked in the process.

Christine Avatar

American Doll was better – still a bit drying but more towards the end, and the way it looked was a lot nicer (it didn’t get all cracked!). With products like these, I try to space them out, because if I wear more than few in a row, my lips do suffer, lol.

Chrissy Avatar

Audrey, You were reading my mind. LOL . I am so disappointed because I was looking forward to buying them because they looked so pretty but, I’m really glad that we have you Christine to try out these products for us so we get a review from someone we trust to give us an honest opinion. I really appreciate that about you.

xamyx Avatar

I’ve only seen one review on these, and was sooo tempted to buy 4-5, but was apprehensive since I’ve had bad luck with Anastasia eyeshadows… The colors/swatches were so pretty though, and there are some unique shades. The “reviewer” claimed these were quite comfortable, and wore well all day, and since she has dry skin, it piqued my interest. Then again, she’s a friend of Norvina, so her opinion may have been just a tad biased… I think I’ll skip these.

Meghan Avatar

The hype around this shade in particular (IMO) has been crazy! Too bad about the bad rating, and that it was so terribly drying! Thank you so much for the review, I’ll definitely pass. And I’m also very thankful for the dupe list it’s such a great feature! I have Bite Beauty’s Amaretto & Leche 🙂

Chloe Avatar

This is probably too much to ask, but would you ever consider doing before and after shots of long wearing lipsticks like this after several hours wear?

Nicole Avatar

This is one that looked so good all over the internet photos and I stalked the website to get it only to be disappointed. This is one of those that I pat on lightlty and gloss down. So,it comletey defeats the purpose of what it is supposed to be. It really upsets me that the other bloggers and youtubers who were given these products for review and swatches either photo shopped or lied about how they felt and wore. I totally should have waited for your reviews! I am so used to your honesty and there are other honest reviews out there. But,it seems like as they gain popularity, they are getting less honest. I know I am not the only on in this boat. because ,a good majority of the colors are sold out. I hate returning things by mail . But, I may look into for the mere principal.

Christine Avatar

I have only worn three, I think (if my memory is failing me this morning, lol), and this was the worst performer. They perform about as well as I’d expect – longer-wearing, pretty pigmented, but they can get drying. This one was particularly bad, though, with additional issues like the cracking/pulling into lines.

If you don’t like what you purchased, you should return. I know you bought many, too, so there’s no reason to keep ones you’ll never use or wear!

Nicole Avatar

I know..My problem is getting through trying them out in time to return them.. as you know, you need practically an entire day to try one and some day I can’t risk a cracky, crazy colored mouth, lol. I had potion on for a few hours last night. It actually seemed surprisingly good. I only had it on about 3 hours though. 🙂

alicia Avatar

I have had this experience with the 4 i bought. all the reviews are rave and i just dont see it. Kinda makes me sad.
I am slightly tricking myself into liking them for the sheer fact i paid 20$ a piece.

Nicole Avatar

I know. I think I have been trying to do that too!lol. But, then I have to remind myself that if they did not have the return policy that they do, I would not have bought them sight unseen. I am going to return those that do not work. It makes me pretty disappointed because I generally am a fan of Anastasia. I love her shadow palettes that I have and brow products, contour kit too. So far to me, it seems, generally, the darker shades are doing way better than the lighter, brighter shades. I bought 17 of them over the course of the first two weeks they were released. I am pretty embarrassed to admit it now. I am banning Youtube and Instagram cosmetic stuff from my life. It seems so fake. But, then again, and I ignorantly failed to consider this at the time, those are initial wear looks, on and off.Makeup should be fun and enhance your features not suck the life out of them and hurt. It is disappointing and these are basically drugstore quality at a department store price. You shouldn’t have to talk yourself into liking them. Your the consumer. The company should be catering to you because it is your hard earned $. I’m sorry for the rant.

Nicole Avatar

I am hoping they take them back. Their return policy says 30 days. But they have the discretion if they think it is “over used”. If they don’t return them,I will be pushed to stop buying their products and that will hurt because I really like some of their stuff. I just feel as though their is some false advertisement with these. And still the other bloggers will say they were “sent” all 20 shades. There will be no mention of the quality of the wear..just the color.

Nicole Avatar

Christine, are you able to tell me which colors you have so i can work on doing my own self test? if not, I understand. They have a 30 day return policy. I am going to try to return those that I can’t tolerate because of the dryness or the the color. Plus, idk if you have noticed. Many of mine, some way worse than others, have a weird chemical-like smell. i don’t really notice it once on. But, It sort of bothered me. So, people very sensitive may not like it. Also, makes me wonder what the heck is in there that i am ingesting ! I am sure it’s in most lip products. but, this really made me think about it!

Nicole Avatar

Great! Thanks..can’t wait to see your thoughts! I gave Retro Coral a run yesterday. It didn’t make it out of the house! Gorgeous color. A lot of line pulling like this one. Balm,gloss..no help. It’s going back.

Celia Avatar

I am so, so glad I waited until you began reviewing these to check them out. But then I feel terrible for your poor lips and want you to never have to swatch something like this again (a woman can dream, no?). I’ll be interested to see how the others perform, but I don’t want any more lip torture for you! American Dream is pretty, but just not different enough from the matte liquid reds I currently have and love to get. I didn’t want my hopes to get too high here, but it is a shame that these lighter colors are often so much harder to do. MUFE Aqua Rouge and a few other greats don’t seem to share this trait, but many others do. If this color worked out, it would’ve been a great matte nude option for me. Sigh.

jdm Avatar

How do these stack up against the KvD liquid lipsticks?

I feel like they all perform the same: lots of pigment at the cost of looking like I colored my lips with colored chalk. I mean, I like matte lips (OCC and Illamasqua are my usual go-tos) but all these newer liquid lipsticks look so heavy looking by comparison. I guess I just pretty a more satiny looking matte!

Christine Avatar

I don’t really notice any major differences between the two formulas myself. Some love the really, really flat matte of liquid lipsticks like these while others want a more “modern” matte – but those who prefer this type of finish often feel that the “modern” matte is more like a satin!

Gina Avatar

Well, I guess I’m glad it’s been sold out everywhere, because I refuse to buy anything you’ve given below a B+. In my opinion it looks very different on you than on the promo swatches and I’m getting really tired of re-touched promo swatches.

Angie Nunez Avatar

Ahh I was waiting a few weeks for you to post a review.. Then I finally caved in before you did. I also ordered American Doll and Pure Hollywood. I instantly loved American Doll, but then again Ruby Woo is my favorite lipstick- I know you aren’t a fan of Ruby Woo bc of it’s dryness. I am a bit disappointed in Pure Hollywood, the tackiness gets to me and I don’t find it universally flattering. I have been playing with lipliners to get it just right. Personally would skip over the nudes of the ABH new line and enjoy the reds. Sometimes pigment of certain lipsticks can ruin the quality.

Yasmeen E Avatar

I had been waiting for you to review this! Everyone on youtube and instagram was singing the praises of this product but I decided to wait for your review because I can always rely on you to give your unbiased, honest opinion. You are literally the only person online that I feel that way about. I was about to buy this and you saved me the trouble! Thank you so much for your honesty. Love you! xoxo

alicia Avatar

You hit the nail on the head with review. I kept seeing all these people gushing over this color/lipstick and my experience was much like yours. It settled weird at first, took a little too long to dry and pulled where my lips touched.

Darlene Avatar

I remember seeing some of the early reviews for this from two youtubers, including Norvina, who did say that the lighter shades were “drying” but not “too much” – just prep your lips – but they kept throwing in that it wasn’t *too much* so I think they are well aware that they perform badly but still released it anyway because they were happy with the shades.

I appreciate your honesty!

Sarah Avatar

Man, so bummed to see this, but you saved me from myself- I was all set to buy this when they restocked. I hope some of the other colors perform better, I liked a few of the others too.

Btw, I’ve always wondered, what are the differences between the two lip swatch photos right before the collage at the end? Different light sources, perhaps?

Natasha Avatar

I wanted this shade so badly because it looked amazing on WOC. It was sold out so I purchased Sugar and Marshmellow from Coloureddrraine. I have dry skin as I live in horrid humidity(FL) so this would be a disaster! Thank you for being honest, I’ll save my money lol.

Amanda Avatar

Glad I didn’t go with this shade. I bought Milkshake (a light pink-nude) and Spicy (bright coral/orange). I really love both of them. Spicy definitely applies better, but I really don’t have that many problems with Milkshake, despite the fact that it’s kinda similar to this shade.

Olivia Avatar

I am learning to be more and more patient because of your reviews. I have to hold back when I like something that you haven’t reviewed because this can happen. I actually love the matte finish and don’t mind dryness, it comes with the territory of using a matte lipstick. But it has to be tolerable… My lips are always dry and I don’t want something that will make them worse and suck the little life they have left out of them. So once again, THANKS for the save!

Christine Avatar

When they’re actually drying, and when they’re REALLY drying, then I feel like they’re just uncomfortable the whole time. Sometimes the longer-wear is worth the “slightly drying” trade-off, lol! (In a perfect world, we would get it all – hydration and long-wear!)

Happy to help, Olivia! 🙂

Christine Avatar

Thanks for the suggestion, Arielle! 🙂 I will say that I am totally backed up when it comes to some budget lip products (I have about 200 that I’ve purchased to swatch in the last month, and I have made 0% progress), so I don’t think I’ll be able to add more at the moment. I need to get through some of those, and then hopefully I can consider your request then 🙂

Jessy Avatar

This is by far the most hyped up product lately, it’s all over IG. I fell into the hype as well and got the shade Lovely, it’s a really nice color on me and I don’t find it as drying as other liquid lipsticks I have tried. But it certainly doesn’t last all day on me. I can probably pull off 3-4 hours of wear before it starts transferring and fading, it does leave a nice tint, but I was hoping for a more longer lasting product. With the application, it tends to sort of pool on the edge of my lips, which is a little annoying.

Ericka Avatar

I was really excited when these came out because of the color range. I purchased sad girl, pure hollywood, and retro coral. I don’t like the tackiness of the formula and the lighter colors applied so streaky and uneven, I was so disappointed. I ended up returning pure hollywood and retro coral and kept sad girl.

Stacey Avatar

I am honestly surprised to see such a poor review and such negative remarks in the comments– I tried Pure Hollywood today and had a completely different experience. It never felt drying, it worse perfectly for over 9 hours, and looked great the whole day. The only gripe I had was that the color did settle into lines more than the darker shades I have, but it wasn’t terrible.

I guess products just really work differently based on the individual- for example, UD 24/7 liners get (or used to get?) rave reviews and they were just miserable on me.

Diosa Avatar

This color just looks SO much lighter on me than it does everyone else. I have no tan at all right now and am about a Mac NC 30, but without lipliner, this gives me MAD concealer mouth. It’s so strange though, because I’ve seen swatches on similarly colored folks and it looks great. So confusing.

anne Avatar

I kind of figured this would be a culprit, considering matte nudes are not usually forgiving + a liquid matte at that ha. I got this shade with the intention of wearing a gloss over , since most of the time thats how i prefer my nudes depending on formula. i also got lovely, hoping that one is a little better wear on its own as well. The only liquid lipstick ive liked is stila beso and aria. For the most part, aside from red i usually won’t suffer the whole day with it matte lol

Lotus Avatar

It never ceases to amaze me how you make everything, including you, look so good! These are icky to me but you wear it well, bless your soul. 🙂

Julia Avatar

Just got the color Heathers and had to try it. After a couple hours my lips looked so cracked and were so dry I HAD to take it off! So disappointed. Love the colors but not worth $20 for an hour wear.

Adrianna Avatar

Try also comparing it to MAC honeylove, swatched them right next to each other today and they were very very similar!!! Its also matte but less drying and lasts longer:)
