Dior Blue Lagoon (374) Eyeshadow Palette ($60.00 for 0.21 oz.) is a mix of summery shades that certainly bring to mind the colors of a lagoon as it is filled with blue, green, and teal. It contains five eyeshadows housed within a plastic compact with two dual-end sponge-tip applicators and a full-size mirror inside.

Blue Lagoon (374) Eyeshadow #1 is a light-medium, pastel sky blue with a satin finish. It had so-so color payoff, and because of its pastel nature, it looked almost chalky against my skin tone–when paired with the deeper tones in the palette, it worked better. Giorgio Armani Swimming Pool Turquoise is darker. Dior Swimming Pool #3 is a touch darker but similar. NYX Cool Blue is darker. MAC Styledriven is extremely similar in color but slightly more satiny. bareMinerals Illusion is lighter.

Blue Lagoon (374) Eyeshadow #2 is a pale, iridescent pastel sea foam green. It’s really rather translucent and sheer; it seemed more like something you’d apply over another shade to add iridescence. Giorgio Armani #10 seemed similar but much more intense/opaque.

Blue Lagoon (374) Eyeshadow #3 is a depened, smoky blue with cool undertones and a satin finish. It had good pigmentation, and it applied smoothly. theBalm Bossy Bobbi is a touch darker. MAC Bold Babe is very comparable. MAC Parisian Skies is bluer. MAC Pre-packaged is deeper, richer. Giorgio Armani Ecailles Black Pearl #1 is darker. Urban Decay Unhinged is lighter.

Blue Lagoon (374) Eyeshadow #4 is a gold-shimmered, dusty blue with a hint of aqua/green and a frost finish. It had good color payoff, and the texture was incredibly soft and silky. L’Oreal Endless Sea is a bit darker but similar. MAC Sky is very comparable. Urban Decay Aquarius is more frosted.

Blue Lagoon (374) Eyeshadow #5 is a pale, pastel yellow-green with a frosted finish. It looks like a mint green in the pan, but swatched and applied, it is much lighter and more like a yellow-green tinted white. It had good pigmentation, and it applied very smoothly. Fyrinnae Jade Ghost and MAC Zestful are both similar but more intense. Lancome Fashion Forward is a bit greener.

You know me, I’m a total glutton for all things teal and tropically-inspired, so when I first saw this quad, I was like, “Oh yeah!” It yielded a much softer look when used than it looked in the pan.  It didn’t look like it was going to be neon brights, but everything was more muted applied.  Two of the eyeshadows (#2 and #5) applied significantly more white-based than they looked in the pan, so they lost some of their differentiation and actual color.

The worst performer was the first eyeshadow (light blue), because it was a little powdery, didn’t apply evenly, and didn’t have great color payoff.  The best performer was #3 (dark blue) in the center, as it had good color payoff and blended out evenly.  I also liked #4 (dusty aqua/teal), but it was a little powdery. Though all of the eyeshadows had soft, silky textures, the palette on the whole was somewhat powdery and missed on the pigmentation.  I had some slight fading after eight hours of wear. For someone who doesn’t like the idea of bright blues, this might be a nice option, but for someone who really wanted the colors as seen in the pan, I think you’ll be disappointed.

These look SO lovely. I don’t wear blue eye shadow often but these colours look so great that if the quality had been better, I’d have bought this for sure.

I’m glad to hear your thoughts and see your swatches on Blue Lagoon. I’ve been on the fence about picking this up since it came out. I’m like you–a sucker for anything blue and teal–but I think I’m going to have to pass–as pretty as it seems.

Hi Christine,

The colors in the Dior Blue Lagoon pan look gorgeous! It’s a shame that they’re not as vibrant when worn, though I suppose it could make them more wearable!

I love this quint, I love Peacock too. Compared to Swimming-Pool and Aurora, the 2013 quints are more pigmented and the texture is much better ( my Swimming-Pool palette is very dry now, I think it’s because of the ” sun ” patterns in the pastel eyeshadows, Aurora is still very good though ) I’ve become a fan of Dior quints I must say, whereas the single eyeshadows didn’t impress me at all.

I had the same experience when I swatched this in the store it did no meet my expectations and I did not get it. Bought lots of other stuff from the bird of paradise collection ha, ha so luckly not everything was a must have. Thanks for your honest review.

madephat Avatar

Ordered this before your review, and man it was bad, one of the shadows even popped out of the palette. Needless to say returned it ASAP!

That actually looks pretty good to me! I don’t mind when shadows are a bit sheer, so long as that’s what I’m expecting. With really bright colors (like those look in the pan), it can sometimes be really difficult to GET a softer sheer effect if they’re super pigmented, so I’m down with this!

Dia Avatar

I found that a few of the shadows in the tester palette that I tried needed to be scraped, for lack of a better word, before they would yield more color

I was fine with that, since I liked the colors, but the palette I brought home also has the same issue Madephat had. For $60, I don’t think I’m asking too much for all of the shadows to be properly glued into the palette. The glue was still tacky and was only in one small spot in the casing and pan, though when the pan came out the glue was also on me and the outside of the palette. Dior may need to rethink the quality of glue they’re using as I wouldn’t even expect this from a palette one third the price.

It’s interesting that you guys mentioned this, because I had the same problem with the aurora palette last year. I loved the colors though, so I returned it and got another. Second one was fine. You’d think Dior would fix this problem considering the price they charge.

Faith Avatar

I notice that the recommended “throw away” time on the bottom of the palette is 6 months. Really, Dior? Really? For $60 you better be sure I’m keeping you for a lot longer then that!

Wwendalynne Avatar

I really do not want this compact other than to sit and stare at its beauty. I’m very much attracted to these colours, but do not reach for them often. Dior quads have never been a fav of mine.

Nicoco Chanel Avatar

Is dior allergic to blue quints? This is like a slightly improved version of Swimming Pool. Why can’t they just improve the pigments – it’s so much easier to sheer out than build up gdit.

Kat Avatar

I could tell that this palette was going to get a so-so or lower rating just from seeing the first picture. These shades seem to be tricky.

Sally Avatar

I really want to try a “retro” look with eye colors like this (and if these go on soft, I may be able to try doing so easier). Question: what are your thoughts on someone with blue eyes giving this palette a try? Would it be too matchy- matchy with blue eyes?

xamyx Avatar

I think the “lack” of pigmentation in this palette, and in those in a comparable price range/demographic, is intentional. Most women willing & able to shell out the amount of money for “luxury” brands aren’t necessarily the type that want bold, bright, intense eye makeup. There are many other brands on the market that do yield heavier pigmentation, so I personally opt for those, rather than even bother with brands I’m certain won’t. I do respect that there are brands that bring other options to the table, especially for those who want less intense shadows.

moushka Avatar

I agree with you. As a woman “of a certain age,” I love finding a palette like this that is gorgeous but not soft. I’m fair so too strong a pigment wipes me out. These look like little jewels in the pan – pure luxury that I can wear everyday 🙂

I bought this and really like it! Of course I don’t mind that it is a bit sheer. The other palette that also came out, however, seems to be VERY sheer. I swatched it in store and barely saw any color.

Vi Avatar

Saw the palette and for the first time, thought I was in serious trouble, would willingly buy a eyeshadow palette of this magnitude (besides UD’s naked). I would have loved to buy it but very disappointed (and yet my wallet is glad)that it doesn’t have very good and true-to-pan pigmentation. D:

VickyM Avatar

Dissapointing that the colors are sheer and didn´t fare well. Now I would think this was ok if the collection was called Angel dust or something like that. However with the Paradise Bird as the subject of the collection I think this is dissapointing, since the theme made me think of bright, bold and luxurious products. And at least when it comes to the eyeshadows, it doesn´t translate like that at all. I guess my wallet is happy.

Claire Avatar

such a shame! the colours look beautiful and I thought they may have improved the quality a bit (I wish they would reformulate the e/s quads finally, the single e/s are really good). I find those blues quite wearable as well.

Marisabel Avatar

Christine, Have you swatched Porcelaine Rose or Stylish Move? I notice you find Dior eye shadows to sometimes be flops, and since they are pricey i would rather know if they are worth it.

Kaitlyn Avatar

It’s so beautiful! I wish I had the skintone to pull those colors off! (although I would want the colors in the pan…) My skintone is just way too warm for colors like that to work. I can make them work in small doses mixed with other, warmer, colors, but I usually just don’t fool with them anymore.
