Burberry Dark Spice Complete Eye Palette
Burberry Dark Spice Complete Eye Palette ($59.00 for 0.19 oz.) contains four eyeshadows. The Complete Eye Palettes are supposed to contain “an illuminating base, two blendable shades, and a liner to define.” Each palette comes in a velvet pouch along with three sponge-tip applicators.
Dark Spice #1 is a warm-toned black with a satin finish–just a touch of sheen, so it’s not quite matte. It had good color payoff, but it’s not the most intense black I’ve come across, and the texture was slightly dry. It’s a basic kind of shade, so it’s likely that you have something similar in your stash already. Shades like Make Up For Ever #04 and MAC Carbon are similar in color but more matte. Le Metier de Beaute Fin is similar but more intense.
Dark Spice #2 is a warm-toned, bronze-shimmered brown with a pearly finish. It had excellent pigmentation, but the texture was slightly dry. Chanel Pearl River #5 is a bit darker. MAC Bronze is more golden. Laura Mercier Cedar is very similar, slightly more matte. Inglot #421 is warmer, not as brown.
Dark Spice #3 is a warm-toned, chestnut brown with strong red undertones and has a soft, satiny finish. It had great color payoff, but like the other shades, there was a very slight dryness to the texture. Clinique Fuller Fudge is more coppery. MAC Ever Elegant is more metallic, so it appears lighter. Tom Ford Illicit is a cream product but close in color. MAC Antiqued is similar in color but more metallic in finish.
Dark Spice #4 is a soft orange with a satin finish–it’s almost like goldenrod but more orange. It had good color payoff, and the texture was soft and buttery–it had the best feel of the four. Wet ‘n’ Wild Desert Festival #4 is darker, more orange. Chanel Pearl River #4 is brighter. Guerlain Calligraphy #2 is more frosted and orange. MAC Chessa is brighter and shimmery. Chanel Tigerlily is a touch lighter.
The major drawback of this palette is the texture, which is slightly dry, though the dryness doesn’t inhibit the color payoff by much (it only seemed to come into play with the black eyeshadow) or the wear, as when I wore the palette, I had no trouble with the colors lasting a full nine hours without any creasing or fading. Burberry’s single eyeshadows, though, have a very soft, buttery texture, and these all felt slightly less buttery, not quite as soft or as smooth. Good but not as fantastic as the singles tend to be, so from that perspective, I was disappointed. The colors go well together, and for those with warmer complexions, this could be an easy, everyday kind of palette. I just wish the feel was like the singles.

I NEED THIS!
Have you tried any of the palettes before, KK?
I love that rusty brown shade! That would look great for those with blue eyes!
It is so pretty! Nicely balanced.
Love the palette, the price is steep. It’d be nice to see a few variations of the eye look with this.
You could try doing the shades horizontally, and then you can add the most pearly shade in the middle of the lid with the other shades flanking it to provide a bit more pop!
I’m so happy you’re reviewing the Burberry line! I’ve been looking for reviews, but I trust yours the most. My Nordstrom doesn’t carry this line, and I’ve been wanting to order a few things. Thanks Christine!
Thanks a lot, Laura! I don’t think my local (well, not-so-local any more) carries the line in-store either! But I have ordered from Nordstrom online and had good success!
Mac Marilyn Monroe collection is being re released at Macy’s counters on may 15.
Oh I love this!
What shade stood out the most to you?
Seems like a great palette but the pricetag… I feel like I have dupes for these colors.
If you have dupes, definitely not a must-have!
Great combination of colours, but I already own similar colours.
I can see that – it’s not super original even if it is a nice combo!
I have one of the palettes, the Pink Taupe one, and there are others I want–oddly, not this one 🙂 I love them, but I don’t have the singles to compare texture.
I haven’t tried Pink Taupe I don’t think, but I’ll have to check it out!
Pink Taupe is I think #7? It’s got a brown, a pink, a green taupe, and a nude color. I like it because the green is a little unusual. I also want Plum Pink, but I keep putting off buying it.
Sounds very pretty… green taupe… say what?!

Thank you 🙂
It’s beautiful, but in no way do I feel it’s a “complete” palette, as implied by the name. Unless one is of a deeper skintone, an additional highlight shade is needed. This isn’t a “deal-breaker” for me, but I know from past comments on other products, many don’t like to go outside of a palette (to some extent, I don’t always like to, either, especially in a quad-I usually use smaller palettes “on-the-go”). It’s also a bit too warm for me, but I’m curious about other shades, and if they are truly “complete”.
From what was described, it didn’t sound like any were intended to be a highlight shade (the lightest color is the base, I believe), so it’ll definitely depend on how you like your palettes!
Like I said, it’s not necessarily a “deal-breaker”, but calling it a “complete” palette is misleading. I’m not typically that nit-picky, but from what I’ve read, many are.
Two of the shades are a touch too warm-toned for my liking. And if you think of what the price would be here in Canada – scaaaarrrrry stuff. I’d rather have the Armani palette you showed the other day.
You definitely have to love all the shades!
Oh boy. I’ve been wanting to try Burberry shadows forever, and this is right up my alley. I can’t just have brown neutrals in one eye shadow palette. I have to have them all, apparently!
When you find the kind of neutrals that work, they’re hard to resist! 🙂
Gorgeous! I want Mocha and Plum Pink more though. This one is pretty but just a touch too dark and warm for my taste!
Do you have any of the palettes yet?
Love the packaging and the shadesa are nice! They go so well together. ^^
Burberry does fantastic packaging!
A burberry palette for warmer skin tones? I must have this but I still need to finish 18 products.
Will I be able to buy this product 6 months from now?
It is part of their permanent range as far as I know!
I adore this combination of colors. The peachy beigey orange shade is my favorite, it reminds me of Mac Burnt Orange which I used to have and was obsessed with
Burnt Orange! Classic.
I really hope you’ll be reviewing more of these, Christine!
I have a couple more! 🙂
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!
Beautiful! Love Burberry make-up!
What are your favorite Burberry products?
Burberry could not have put together a less flattering combination of colors for my skin tone and shading, but I do think this will be an excellent palette for warmer and darker skin tones. 🙂 I really love all things Burberry, but most of the palettes they’ve released for this series are shades of which I have dupes aplenty or colors I don’t often wear. I’ll be interested to see how they expand the line in the future.
I normally only purchased MAC and UD eye shadows palette. But I’m really loving these colors. Christine the way you wore it, I’m tempted to get it.
I have been eyeing this for a while now but wasn’t sure about it. Thanks for such a detailed review. My mind is made up and I will be purchasing this baby 🙂
No problem!
I have four of the complete eye palettes: Smokey Grey, Mocha, Dark Spice and Plum Pink. All of them seem to be a bit more powdery rather than buttery smooth, as the singles are, but like you said, that doesn’t affect the application or wear time. I absolutely love them and I wear them quite often. Smokey Grey seem to be the least powdery of the four I have. Someone from a Burberry store told me that the company is looking into manufacturing their own cosmetics, which is a scary thought, because their make-up line is pretty much perfect as it is and I wonder whether these palettes were the first try, as the texture is definitely not as buttery smooth as the single are…
