Do you keep an inventory of the beauty products you own?
I haven’t in a very, very long time. These days, most products are limited edition, photo quality has improved, and there are less and less reasons to keep products after they’re reviewed, so I don’t find an inventory is necessary any more.
No, I’m not that organized (or anal) when it comes to makeup or pretty much anything else (like what’s in my freezer, pantry, etc.). I go pretty much by memory (which works okay for makeup/skincare and for sewing patterns but not to much for the whole freezer/pantry issue, alas!). When it comes to makeup, my biggest issue is trying to locate where I’ve stored a product I’ve not used in a while and want to bring out of “hiding” again. There are times when I’ve spent ages looking for something only to find out it was where I looked initially but I just didn’t “see” it the first (and sometimes second or third) time I looked in that drawer….
Thank you for saying that…about not actually recognizing s.t. Where you think it lives…and it does, but you miss it where it lives and look elsewhere. I was beginning to think I had visual agnosia!
Nah – it’s just a total overabundance of “stuff”. I spent ages looking for a MAC blush a few weeks ago and when I finally did find it, I thought it would make sense to keep all my “on hold” MAC blushes in the same place…that’s about as organized as I’ve managed to get!
Nope: I have my stash curated down enough to have majority committed to memory. Also, I try to keep my Temptalia vanity up to date because I use the dupe feature religiously. That’s sufficient record for my purposes..
I do. I’ve started a couple of years ago to curb my purchases. I had my first decluttering and it was very eye opening to see how many products had gone bad because I either had forgotten I even had them or had too many of the same type of products. So I started to keep an inventory and limited my buying because I would never use up I.e. all of my 60+ lipsticks before they are no longer usable
I used to track s/c on a spreadsheet. Now that the routine is pretty set, no need to be that nerdy. Never say nerdy like it’s a bad thing! My memory is usually good enough for color cosmetics, except if I decide to arrange by color rather than brand, or vice versa. Occasionally I have a dupe of s/c and still order, due to good price…and I might forget that. It’ll take a bit of better retention after I continue the huge purge started to be able to move. Now, I’m surrounded by sturdy egg carton delivery boxes…at least 100 of them. I did take out an Adept with neutrals and a summerish Nars blush palette (Steven Klein). Not sure I actually have to move, at least not yet. Odd crossroads.
Yes, I track them in a spreadsheet. Once I purchase an item and I hate it in my hands, I add it to the list with the date of 3 years from manufacturing (which I take from checkcosmetic.com). Once I open it, I add my ‘use-by-date’, which is either self imposed (I only keep mascara opened for 3 months) or based on the months on the jar pictogram.
Sometimes I also add notes, for example which similar shade or products I want to purchase when I need a replacement.
I do! I track literally every piece of makeup I own on this site. I sat down a few years ago, took all my makeup out, and manually entered each thing. It took several hours, but the effort has reaped exponential dividends on the other end. Totally worth the time. When I’m out at a store or looking online, I compare dupes to see if I need a product or already have something like it. If I buy something new, it immediately gets entered on the website. Seriously, temptalia.com is a game changer for keeping track of what I own!
To a decent enough extent, but it could certainly use a bit of improvement. I always try to keep my Vanity here on this site up to date, although every now and then something will slip through the cracks. I’m considering adding an Excel chart app to my phone, just for an added layer of inventory keeping.
I used to, simply to keep track of everything I had and to avoid unintentionally buying the same product twice.
These days my collection is a lot more pared down so it’s easier to monitor.
I used to have a spreadsheet and then I started using the Vanity feature on here (very helpful, thank you Christine!) and haven’t looked back! I keep it current with new purchases and purges. It keeps me organized but also makes it glaringly obvious how many of the same colors I have 😀
I did start one during the long, boring days of lockdown a couple of years ago, but I haven’t kept it up to date. I try to keep all of my beauty products easily accessible so that I can rotate them.
I have decluttered over the past year (a couple I regret tossing now – but really I didn’t reach for them, prefering different palettes), but still I have a decent sized stash.
Just started a spreadsheet of my fragrances, I have over 100 and I’ve had to include my backups because if I see a good deal, I will buy it and get home- lo and behold, I have a backup already. 🙄 There are a few fragrances that I do have two and three for a backup, I love them so much. Unfortunately, I have a rather large amount of makeup, 90% high end so I’ve been debating about doing one for my makeup- the fragrance one was a warm-up and I’ve figured out I do like it to track my fragrances.
I’ve also started trading samples with another person on IG so it helps them to know what I have, rather than buying samples. We trade thoughts back and forth, and I’ve made a new friend in the process. 🥰 A rather long answer to your question, but I am planning on doing a spreadsheet for my makeup…..🤔
Hi Christine! I want your help about The Swatch Gallery. Some products (older I must say), they not exist in swatch form, but only as a product image only, although they have been reviewed. Is there another way to make comparisons, opening up the swatch images? Thank you and congratulations again, for your quality work
Hi Amalia,
After a certain point in age, they were removed from the Swatch Gallery due to quality levels/lighting quality falling below standards, so we didn’t want the images mixed in with the gallery!
Thank you for your response! I understand the love and passion in your work and the improvement of the quality of this blog to the max! 👏🏻
I use the Vanity feature here, and that’s it. I think I have a fairly good memory when it comes to makeup.
The only thing I have an inventory of are books that are in an inner row on the shelves, and there’s a lot of them. I don’t have enough wall space for bookcases, so I have to have double rows where I can.
Yes! A few years ago I created a spreadsheet inventory (inspired by some of the commenters here!). Each tab is for a different category (lipstick, eyeshadow, etc.). It really opened my eyes to how much makeup I owned and was instrumental to me cancelling my Ipsy subscription. It has also helped me to not buy as much and shop my stash.
What is the Vanity feature and how can I access it? I cant find it.

Thank you!!!
That link just explains updates. How do I start adding items and starting my own Vanity list??
You create a user profile, and then you go to your vanity! There is a user menu at the top of the site once you register.
