What type of products excited you at first but don't excite you now?

Highlighters. I think it’s hard to get TRULY excited over a new highlighter now; they keep releasing gorgeous ones, but it’s a category where most brands release within a limited spectrum of possibilities.

Skincare. But 15 years of skincare PR will do that, I suppose ?‍♀️and anything with pigment is far more interesting at baseline.

Liquid lipsticks. I went through a phase of buying them a couple years ago, and wore them every day, but now I stick almost exclusively to bullets.

Also, bright eyeshadow colors. I was very experimental in 2019, and bought quite a few of the ColourPop bright monochromes (yellow, blue, green, pink, purple…), but if I’m being honest with myself, these tiny, hooded eyes of mine look best in neutral shades, especially cool neutrals. There are quieter shades in each of those palettes that I can use, but I have come to the realization that I can’t pull off those gorgeous, colorful eye looks that Christine designs.

Same here. I think I’m down to maybe 6 at most after doing several clean-outs. Most time I forget to wear it. When I do wear it, I like to apply and then blot and rub it around a bit. I just can’t handle the crisp edges anymore.

Nail polish. Yeah, that’s a shocker to me, too. But I own probably 150+ of them, so there just isn’t much that’s new to me lately. That, plus my nails are in lousy condition in the past few years, so I’m less excited about even doing manicures than before.
Also, all dry-down liquid lipsticks are on my “less than enthused” list, too. I cannot deal with chalky sensations on my lips! Or feeling like the very life force of my lips are being sucked dry.

I’m also over highlighters! I have enough shimmery eyeshadows that work as highlighters! What I’m really over is liquid lipstick! Some formulas are still way too drying and I don’t have the interest or energy to find the perfect ones anymore! I prefer regular old bullet lipstick! Hasn’t failed me yet! Also, mascara! I don’t use it enough to pay more than $5 for it!

Gel liners in pots. I still like them, but I was really, really into them for a while. I just haven’t been doing the more complex liner looks, and it seems like I don’t see pot liners being marketed as much as they were a few years ago.

Also, ColourPop Super Shock Shadows. I still like the ones I own, but I haven’t bought new ones in years. I used to love them because they came in brights and complex colors, and many had lots of sparkle or ultra-metallic finishes. I got less interested when CP got rid of a lot of the colors that initially attracted me, and went more neutral. I know they started adding more brights back into their SSS lineup, but now it’s easier to find brights and interesting finishes in pressed powder form, which I prefer.

Eye pencils and eye liners.
I used to get all excited about having multiple colors (black, different shades of brown, green, blue, purple, burgundy), but nowadays I just end up having one shade of a flattering brown and that’s enough.
Eye liners… a part of me still wants to rock a cat eye almost every day… but nowadays it’s barely once a week. I don’t even buy full sizes anymore, just minis.

I used to feel like I needed to jump on every single Too Faced collection. After busting my butt to get the original, “limited edition” peach palette, only for them to turn around a release an entire collection, I’ve been somewhat disillusioned. Not to mention some pretty garbage quality releases… They do seem to be turning things around but it’s hard to get excited.

Bonnie Avatar

I sort of agree. I don’t think these brands are so bad, it’s just that since their moment, there have just been better quality releases, and those of us who buy a lot of makeup now have higher expectations.

I too am overloaded on highlighters. I look at new releases but that is usually as far as it goes, unless the reviews are unbelievably good, then I will investigate further. I’m too much of a makeup junkie to be disillusioned about much else really.

I realize that I do not like “frosty opaque” highlighters. I have purchased so many that I have come to love a bronzy glittery sheer highlighter or a more “wet” look. My perfect highlighters are the bronze color from the Pat McGrath trio.. I WISH she would give me a big single of that one. I scraped the pan and wet it with fix plus to get all the product out! and I love the MAC extra dimension skin finishes.. my fave is Show Gold.. I have several others I like but these stand out for me. I have decluttered all the white base opaque frosty highlighters from my collection.. a streak of product on my tan skin is not a look I’m after 🙂

I’m not making a case for frosty, opaque highlighters as I have a tendency to enjoy more towards your preferences – but. Are you sure you were using a dark enough shade? I’m much lighter than you but I’ve recently realized that I was going too light with my highlighters, giving me a frostier appearance than I wanted.

I am much less interested iin all cheek products; blush and highliter. It feels like every color and texture has been done. I have the ones I love along with a few I don’t. Just don’t need anymore in my collection.

Oh god FOUNDATION! lol Mostly because it’s so difficult for me to find a foundation that does *everything* I want. So it’s not that I don’t get excited about it, it’s more that I’ve had to set my expectations lower lol

Anybody found their “miracle foundation” out there? lol

I just want:

-pore blurring
-color matching
-mostly natural
-long lasting

Foundation! Does it exist?! lol

M Avatar

Pore blurring and natural are almost mutually exclusive, from an ingredient perspective. You kind of need a substantial layer to effectively blur pores and provide enough of the necessary polymers to do so.

I agree on highlighter. While a really beautiful new, artfully done one can still get me excited (Mac Lunar New Year, Becca Lunar New Year, Melt Amor Eterno), overall highlighters are a product I don’t love using. I mean, I do it every day in my makeup routine, but for me, they add the least to my overall look and don’t last that long.

Same with nail polish and eyeliner. I went through my phases with those, having them in every color, but now I reach mostly for black liner and I have enough nail polish.

My next phase was lipstick. I’m still into it, but not like I was.

Eyeshadow palettes are what I’m into right now.

Jane Avatar

I can’t believe I’m going to say this…eye shadow palettes. Yes, they are still the FIRST thing I look at for a brand and look for when someone’s putting out a new release, article; etc., but they rarely make me swoon as a year or more ago.
