Do you layer fragrances?
Very occasionally — I’m definitely not adverse to it, but I tend to reach for just one at a time. There aren’t any particular combos I’ve done often enough that I can actually remember a pairing that worked well!

I might layer within a fragrance (using matching shower gel or lotion), but I never layer different fragrances together.
I do – I love BBW fragrance sprays, but they don’t have enough staying power for me, so I add in some complimentary EdP
Nope. If I like a fragrance, I want to wear it “as is”. I also happen to think that “noses” are better at mixing and developing scents than I am. Some of the scents I like are also available as body creams/lotions, shower gels, etc. and I will do that – layer various formulas of the same fragrance to intensity or extend how long it lasts.
Agree. The “noses” create scents to develop a certain way. One of my favorite perfumes changes on me throughout the day, starting out non-sweet citrus-orange, then slowly changing as fresh basil starts to develop, then by the end of the day, a bit of woody amber has blended with the fresh basil. I think it’s genius to be able to create a scent that can do that.
On the other hand, I have read about scents that were created to be mixed and matched. (Of course, I can’t remember any of them right now!)
Also agree.
I avoid scents in everything, except fragrance. My make-up, skincare and hair care is fragrance free, my laundry supplies are fragrance free. If I’m using fragrance, I want to enjoy the pure mix of scent developed by the “nose”, try to capture the story or the emotion the fragrance invokes. Most times I don’t even use fragrance directly on skin, I spritz it on my hair or clothes (not directly, just mist); my body chemistry highly modifies any fragrance (e.g. on me every sweet fragrance doesn’t smell that sweet, some even `become` fresh), to the point people knowing that specific fragrance don’t recognize it.
But I’m odd like that… I would smell fragrances for hours in a stores, from the container directly, on fabrics, but I’m not so fond on applying them on myself. 😆
Actually, that’s pretty wise. Volatile essential oils can be highly sensitizing, in the short OR long run. The scents develop on fabric, but not as they do on skin itself. That manner of scenting is very much in the ittar tradition, from India. I ALWAYS apply to clothing, if I mistakenly/historically bought something with fragrance modifiers, or if uncertain about ingredients.
It’s a no for me. Some time ago I had a Chanel Coco Mademoiselle body cream and I used to layer a bit of it under the fragrance, although it was necessary tbh. So I ended up using either the body lotion or the perfume, the latter being my signature fragrance for day time. I prefer the EDP over the EDT, and the ones that I have, last on me. There are some lighter, floral fragrances (EDT mostly), that can be layered, but doing so with some high-end EDP can be tricky. You really have to know how the middle and the base notes interact with each other and how they come together. I prefer to use one fragrance at a time.
*it was NOT necessary (layering the body cream under the fragrance)
Just like.. ALL THE TIME!
No I really don’t. I have layered fragrances that were meant to be layered but I don’t have the ability to mix scents and have it turn out smelling nicely. I do occasionally stack scents, ie lotion, body wash, perfume etc. but that is as far as I go. I just don’t trust my ability to do so.
Only very simple fragrances. For example; Atelier Cologne Sanguine Orange mixed with Fresh Life for even more of a fresh, citrusy scent (very invigorating!). Or mixing the Sanguine Orange with a vanilla scent for a creamsicle scent, just for fun.
As for my *true* perfumes, no, I do not.
Yes. Love to experiment. I’ll mix them on paper first, and then if I like it, try a small amt on just one spot and let it marinate for a while to see how it develops. I went through a fragrance buying period and now have some that I love and wouldn’t dream of altering, and a lot that are fine, but not transcendent art/emotionally evocative enough to worship as they are. I’ll try mixing w/ a scented lotion, other perfume/edc, with essential oils…. And then there are the ones I keep trying to make wearable, but at this point should just admit the mistake and pass them on or bin. Or trade – if I can find anyone who’s taste is the inverse of mine. If Christine would be OK w/ it, I could list some bottles I’d be happy to exchange for something more my style, and hopefully make someone else ecstatic w/ a new discovery, or a bottle of something they’d lusted after…..?
Not different fragrances just the same fragrance in the body wash, body lotion and fragrance. I don’t have enough knowledge to be able to layer my fragrances but it would be very interesting to do.
Chanel no 5 leau or any version mixed with any vanilla or sugar scent
Sometimes. I prefer simple soliflores (single flower fragrances like gardenia or lotus) and occasionally I will layer them with a citrus (yuzu is a favorite) to brighten them up.
Rarely. If there is a fragranceI don’t care for, but I can’t give it away (say it was a gift from my kids), I’ll layer it with something else to improve it.
I layer only with my Jo Malone colognes. They were designed to be layered so I think they are (usually) fool proof. I enjoy visiting the manager at the JM counter because together we get creative and discover something unique.
I’m with you, Pamela. Jo Malone has taken over my dresser & I have several favorite combos that I absolutely LOVE! I’ve also layered two of Tom Ford’s scents because I was inspired by a discontinued JM scent. It turned out nicely, but I generally reserve layering for JM.
Not really – I tend to have one perfume on me for the day and I don’t generally use the body lotion (too much fragrance on my sensitive skin).
