MAC Cosmetics Chill Collection Review

OVERALL, Chill is a collection I imagine most people will pass on. With the holidays being a time where most are often buying gifts for others and thus spending less on themselves, I just don’t think Chill has any wow-factor to get you excited. The Penultimate Liner is definitely worth taking a look at, and I think this is the only stand-out product (just because it’s completely new) of the launch. The eyeshadows are subdued and cool-toned without a lot of color; the lipglasses are also fairly cool-toned and swatch well, but they aren’t nearly as pigmented on lips (based on my trial). It’s not a bad collection, but with Dame Edna just around the corner, Brunette, Blonde, & Redhead in January, and then Hello Kitty looming in the horizon–I think people would rather wait for one, two, or all three of those known upcoming launches.

Get a breakdown of each of the products from this launch…

Eyeshadows

  • Apres-Ski is a cool, light brown with a matte finish. It’s not a chalky matte, but it doesn’t have the same pigmentation as some of the more recent matte shadows to be released. All of the colors in this launch are best described as slightly subdued.
  • Arctic Grey is a silvery shade with just a hint of goldish brown, but the tone of it is still very cool. The shimmer in it isn’t overwhelming–almost like a sheen.
  • Mont Black is a semi-chalky dark black with subtle bits of bluish glitter in it. I’m least impressed by this color, because I can make-do with permanent shade Black Tied or even just go with Carbon and add glitter on top if need be.
  • Vellum is a white eyeshadow with a blue-toned sheen that reflects well. It kind of reminds me of snow in a sense–the best color of the five.
  • Wintersky is a pale, pale pink with cool tones to it. It has the same sheen-shimmer appearance as Arctic Grey does.  I’m jealous of those of you who have seen pink skies!

Penultimate Liner

Rapidblack is tricky to review just by swatch alone, since you really need to hold it and try lining with it. For some reason, it photographs a dark brown and not at all black–which worries me a little, because I tried two different cameras to get it to photograph. Oddly enough, the lipglasses photographed accurately but Rapidblack didn’t. It’s pigmented and wet enough to use as liquid liner in a pen-form. I can’t wait to hear what you all think about it, since it is a totally new product from the brand.

Lipglass

  • Snowscene is a frosty white with pink and teal reflects in it that looks icy almost. It’s pretty, but on its own, it’s very cool and probably best worn over a lipstick or combined with another gloss.
  • Icescape is a pinkish-peach base with subtle marigold shimmer. It looks pigmented, but when applied to lips, I didn’t feel like it did much for me, unfortunately.
  • Frozen Dream reminded me a lot of CK’s Knockout, which I bought last week–and when swatched, it looks fab. On my lips, like Icescape, it hardly gave me any color at all. I’d take Knockout any day of the week over this one!
  • Naked Frost surprised me, because it was the most noticeable when applied to lips. It’s very goldish-antique brown kind of. It has multicolored shimmer, which makes it more wearable. I didn’t love how it looked alone, but I think it would work well with some of my other lipsticks to make them browner or to tone them down.

Reflects Glitter

  • Reflects Antique Gold is a lovely shade of rich brown with antique gold reflects. The glitter is extremely fine and goes on smooth. It looks like shimmering water!
  • Reflects Transparent Teal is not as smooth as Antique Gold, but it does have the same fineness in particle size. I just find that both this one and Transparent Pink tend to go on chunkier than some of the other newer Reflects shades.

I totally feel this is targeted towards blonde/fair people. I just don’t see much variety for different skin tones in the collection. The odd lipglass or shadow (paired with other from an existing collection) might look good on cool brunettes though.

The colours are actually quite neutral, so they would look good on both cool & warm skintones (I’m warm). Apres Ski is a great brown/greay that mac does not have a dupe of.

In Scandinavia – or at least I’ve seen it in both Denmark and Norway – we often have pink tinted skies on clear days in winter. It’s so cold, and the sun rises is so late, sometimes it will look like a very muted sundown all day.

I have definitely seen pink winter sky in Canada on the prairies, and its gorgeous!

I am really looking forward to the lipglasses, but thats about it, thank god!

Christine,

Of these shadows are there any that are dups and if so by waht other colors (permantent line or past limited is ok)that you prefer?

Also, if you have this notes somewhere else, please let me know and sorry about the extra work.

Thanks.

Firstly: I’m a cool-toned, black-haired girl.

Secondly: I really loved a lot of this collection because I think it really suits my coloring. I picked up Frozen Dream (looks gorgeous!) and Winter Sky (really looks pretty, and I adore veluxe pearls) and the Penultimate Liner. I also liked Icescape, Vellum and Arctic Gray, but I am holding out for Blonde, Brunette, Redhead (which my counter JUST GOT IN and had the boxes sitting right behind the counter! I really wanted to leap over and dive in).

I love all of the lip glasses actually. But at the same time, I’m kind of scared of too much color. For example, I purchased Rich and Ripe from Cult of Cherry and that is just way too dark for me. I think that these are perfect glosses because they give a nice pop on top of any lipstick that you want. I really like Snowscene, I think it looks like a dazzleglass. Gorgeous!!! But at the same time, I don’t think I’m going to get much of the lip products from Dame Edna. I’ll have to see. Probably just one of the glosses and the purple eye pallet. I have to say that I’m excited about the beauty powders…I hope they don’t disappoint. But I’m a MAC addict, there’s not too much I don’t love about MAC. It’s a problem. I think Blonde Brunette Redhead is going to be huge! I wish Hello Kitty wasn’t black, but oh well. Hello Kitty is supposed to be bright and youthful and it’s kind of different than the original. Oh well.

Dame Edna is pretty bold/colorful in comparison to Chill — the two are so very different in their “themes.” I’m looking forward to BBR as well, since I’ve been lovin’ more neutral shades and looks.

What was your favorite Chill lipglass?

I’m definitely getting Snowscene, Icescape, and Frozen Dream, they are gorgeous. I wanted the eyeshadows, but after seeing swatches, I don’t like them much. I think I will get Copperplate instead or Smoke and Diamonds. Although I might still get Wintersky. Does anybody know if there are any perm or LE dupes for Wintersky? Only pinks I really have are Sunset B and Pink Freeze.

P.S. I was going to get Wintersky with my haul until I realized it was the same as a Cover Girl shadow I have. (I know people might not like the quality of CG, but they have a light frosty pink with is exactly the same as it when swatched. Also I find that it stays on really well and is very shimmery/pigmented; the color has been around for years and is a reg collection color. Sorry I don’t remember the name.)

Pink skies remind me that freezing weather is coming, well more like deep sometimes light reddish pink, nothing like Wintersky. I’m jealous of you guys without -25 degrees(Celsius)weather *Shiver*.

I got Apres Ski, Artic Grey & Winter Sky e/s and Naked Frost, Snowscene & Frozen Dream l/g. I was suprized by how much I liked Winter Sky, because usually pink shadows are not my thing, this one is a more beige pink so I think it suits my NC30 complection well.

I totally forgot about how soon Dame Edna & Blonde Brunette Redhead are coming – whoops! I shouldn’t have spent so much! But the colours are really nice.

I really like the look of this collection because I think it will suit my skin. I’m slightly lighter then NW15 and have a very cool skintone with blue/pink undertones. These kind of “icey” looks work on me! Plus I’m a Canadian girl so I might as well represent the weather! Yay to my boyfriend who just got me new winter windshield wipers and installed them (secretly) while I was at work. I think I’m going to keep him:)

The Penultimate Eyeliner is fantastic!!! It’s pretty much like a marker! The black can look pretty intense, which is awesome! It looks great on the upper lash line and is great for making the cat-eye look! It might be a bit hard getting a perfect straight-looking line, but if you just can’t get the line to look straight and neat, you can smudge it with a cotton swab and it’ll look nice.
I’m a guy, so I haven’t used it on myself yet. But I bought it to re-try a look I borrowed from Kylie Minogue back in Halloween.

I’m hoping I can get the rays on her eye as thin and perfect as she has them this time with the Penultimate Eyeliner!
