  • Haul/Rediscoveries: Hourglass Vanish Liquid Foundation, Natasha Denona Face Glow, Marc Jacobs Steel(etto) palette
  • Weekend plans: I think we’re going to keep it low-key, as neither of us have been sleeping well lately. I so wish I was capable of taking naps (I very rarely fall asleep, and if I do, I wake up with a migraine).
  • What’s your decorating style??: Modern glam? I like a little glitz/bling but generally like clean lines and only hints of bling.

Mellan is always such a cutie. What mess–I don’t see any mess!

Haul: Fenty Beauty Killawatt Foil Highlighter Duo Mimosa Sunrise/Sangria Sunset. I’ve got very cool undertones (blue veining, even) and so anything with orange usually looks strange. Being able to customize by adding the pink really helps. I wore it for the first time a couple days ago and really liked the look–it was unique and not over the top.

No weekend plans. It’s supposed to snow here, which it doesn’t usually do, so we’re staying home and I’m just going to cook, read and binge watch TV or Netflix. We get our exercise by going outdoors and knocking the snow off all of our small trees, shrubs and other plants. Weather people are projecting 8 to 10 inches so that should give my lots of upper-arm exercise.

Decor is sort of eclectic–bit of modern, tiny bit of country, some Mission in one room, etc. It sounds hodgepodge but seems to work. We want to downsize for the next five years so we’ll be getting rid of stuff anyway.

Regarding migraines and trouble sleeping, I’ve suffered from migraines my whole life and after working with a couple neurologists, finally found a drug that works. Unfortunately, it can’t be used more than twice a week (more use could cause rebound headaches) so I’ve experimented with other things to cut down on the frequency. Recently I accidentally discovered something that reduced my frequency: taking two CoQ10 (Ubiniquol) capsules a day. Usually neurologists recommend other supplements first, like riboflavin, but taking this one twice a day (100 mg x 2) worked for me. Another very recent thing that has been found to work (haven’t tried it yet) is using Bio-Kult probiotic 2x a day. The study is on NCBI website.

Regarding sleep, besides keeping the bedroom pretty cool, wearing socks to bed works for some reason. Not sure why but studies these things work. I still get insomnia or wake up during the night now and then but not as often as I used to.

Have a great weekend!

Nancy T Avatar

Kitty, yes to wearing socks to bed and keeping the bedroom comfortably cool instead of warm! I also have sleep issues with bouts of insomnia, these help a great deal, as does my keeping my fan on all night, as the so-called white noise blocks out most outside noise. Something I need to do because I live on a rather busy, noisy street and have one very obnoxious next-door neighbor! Ubiquinol has helped to cut the intensity of my migraines, too. They still happen, but aren’t as intense or frequent. Going to look into the probiotics now too!

Kitty Avatar

Nancy T, I forgot about white noise! So important, especially when living in the city or in dense housing or near noisy neighbors. We live in a quiet neighborhood nowadays, although someone leaves out a barking dog some nights which is so annoying. I love the sound of a fan too. We used a fan every night in CA when we lived in noisy apartments for years.

You’re the first person I’ve met who also found that Ubiquinol also reduced her migraine frequency or intensity. I wonder why it seems to work for some people. I’ve taken just one capsule for years and added the second one when starting a Polyphenolic extract pill to reduce cholesterol, and that’s when I saw the migraine frequency go down.

I’m still looking into the Bio-Cult so would be interested in hearing if it works for you. I’m leaning towards trying it but have read some reviews about it causing some issues w/those who may have histamine intolerance or sensitivity. Histamine is something I’ve not figured out as causing me issues or not, so that makes me a little hesitant. I may buy a couple bottles to try them out though.

Brenda C Avatar

Interesting, I’ll have to increase mu CoQ10 see if it helps me. Then check into the probiotic. Migraines are a normal fact of my life.

Haul: No.7 Triple Action Lift and Illuminate Serum Foundation, Smashbox Primerizer, and Bobbi Brown Crushed Liquid Lipstick in Give a Fig.

Rediscoveries: Just a general thing… setting with a tiny bit of powder under my eyes. I am currently using the Maybeline Fit Me Finishing Powder and it’s really nice. My undereyes always creased and looked dry when I set them before, but they look pretty nice when I set with this powder in my current make up routine, so I’m happy with that.

Weekend plans: Probably cleaning and taking my son to get a haircut. Nothing too exciting.

What’s your decorating style??: Colorful. I like lots of color in my space and tend to be attracted to pieces that are unique, so nothing matches. I love it.

Alice Avatar

Haul: New Doc Martens since my old ones cracked. Rediscoveries: MAC Sin lipstick, it’s one of my favorite reds but I haven’t worn it in foreeeeever.

Weekend Plans: Brewing a mead. Putting the new door and panels on the MR2 Spyder.

Decorating style: Witch who was turned immortal during the Victorian era and got really into sci-fi in the 1960s.

Brenda C Avatar

Hi Mellan!

Haul/Rediscoveries: still on my no-buy

Weekend plans: If my daughter is feeling ok we are going to be taking her out to celebrate her birthday at Ruths Chris. Otherwise it’s so cold and snowy we will hibernate, it’s brutal.

What’s your decorating style??: Classic/eclectic.

Deborah S. Avatar

Haul: Nothing, woot woot!!

Weekend plans: Not much. We are finally getting a little accumulation of snow and the temperatures have plummeted so we will likely be blowing out the driveway and around the house most of the weekend. Yesterday our high was 17 and our low was 8 so the snow is actually sticking which it hadn’t done yet this year. I don’t love blowing snow but we do need the moisture or our summer forest fire season will be horrific.

Decorating style: Vintage with a touch of shabby chic. I have a lot of antique pieces that I have collected over my 65 years. I am also a bit of a collector so I have china and glass pieces everywhere. I have a theory, which hold true in my family, that we tend to like what our grandparents liked and not what our parents were in to. My parents loved very minimalist decorating and Danish Modern was all the rage in the late 50’s and 60’s. I really hate the look but my daughter loves it. I love the furniture my grandparents had so started collecting it myself. I started incorporating some shabby chic pieces after my divorce as my ex loved a lot of dark wood and I just started to feel like it was way too heavy and dark. I started buying some painted pieces and painted a few antique pieces that I own. He was flabbergasted when he stayed here that I had painted wood pieces. Nothing I have is “museum quality” and the wood is still under there so if someone wanted it to go back to walnut or mahogany they could strip it!

Haul: Suva Beauty Mystery Box, Feet Up Inversion Trainer
Rediscovery: Pat McGrath Mothership V palette (it’s my February palette)
Weekend Plans: I need to wash my hair tonight. I work Saturday, and I’m hosting my sister’s baby shower on Sunday.
Decorating Style: I prefer things to be pretty simple with a hint of drama.

Nancy T Avatar

All I’m seeing is Mellan and a huge cup o’ latte! ☕

Haul: Placed a ColourPop order last weekend for the purple palette that everyone is raving about, I think it’s called “It’s My Pleasure”? Plus two of their new colored mascaras in purple and red, also Hallucinogenous Jelly e/s. Picked up a new shower cap at Ulta last night along with a new Smashbox Fishnet Always On eye pencil for tightlining (mine was down to a difficult to use nubbin!) and OGX Argan Oil Weightless Healing Dry Oil for my reattempt at embracing my curly hair. This, thanks to watching Leesha doing her own video on the “Curly Girl method”, born of desperation last weekend with a still sore wrist, but in dire need of a deep shampooing!

Weekend plans: Other than attending Sunday’s meeting, I have to do my hair routine and I had BETTER get back into the nail care routine. My once lovely nails look absolutely wretched and have been getting weaker.

What is your decorating style? If I finally buy a new couch, which I need to do and fast, I will be going for a good fake leather sectional in a burnt red/oxblood color and blackened or very dark wood to add color back into my living area. In AZ, most apartments will not allow tenants to paint their walls, and they always paint them a horrid semi-gloss white, so I need color badly. In the bedroom and bathroom, various rich, yet muted tones of purple prevail. But what would I title my actual *chosen* style as? Probably “simple modern with a Gothic touch”? Not sure, because it’s all a bit eclectic!

Emily Avatar

Ugh, I hear you on the migraines. I can sometimes sneak in a short caffeine nap without paying for it, but that’s about it.

Haul/Rediscoveries: Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink in Believer. This shade is a lower price online for some reason, so I got Target to price-match it. Initial impression is that it looks good built up to opaque, but was patchy when I tried to apply a more sheer layer. I’m going to try again, though, because I do like the look of sheer bold purples.

I also received two BH palettes that I’d ordered a while back. Zodiac Love Signs and Take Me Back to Brazil. I haven’t had a chance to play with them at all yet, though.

Weekend plans: Saturday: lots of cleaning. Sunday: hosting a friend for brunch.
Oh, and replacing the three bulbs that have burnt out in the last two weeks above my bathroom mirror so I can actually see to do my makeup!

What’s your decorating style??: Um, I’m not sure I have much of an intentional style, but I like bright colors that will keep me cheerful through the very cloudy winters here. And lots and lots of bookshelves!

Ziwei Avatar

Haul/Rediscoveries: Rediscovered my Cle de Peau highlighter. I’m gonna try to pan it this year. 10 grams is very substantial for a highlighter but since it’s more subtle, I can build it up and not have to tap off the excess.
Weekend plans: Sunday brunch somewhere in the City, and maybe go to the botanical gardens since neither of us have been there despite moving to DC 6 months ago.
What’s your decorating style? Modern and clean. All neutral colors. Basically Ikea-ville but with more sturdy furniture lol.

Wednesday Avatar

Happy Weekend!

Haul/Rediscoveries: A bit of a big week. I blame boredom and the frigid temperatures. The Guerlain LE highlighter, Hourglass Vanish Liquid Foundation (yuck, promptly returned) PMG lip glosses (purchased 3 glosses with points credit from big S..yay!), Ordered Sydney Grace eyeshadows (FYI Fin is discontinued, but I contacted a service rep and they found a remainder pan for me for my order) and Viseart Liason palette. Rediscovered TF BTW foundation
Weekend plans: A friend lost her mother so we are having a life celebration party. I think it will be very uplifting for Nat for all of us to be there for her.
What’s your decorating style??: Colour. I am definitely not your beige everywhere person.. weird because I dress monochromatically, but in my home, I am definitely colour with a bit ‘o bling. Can you describe an interior as funky and elegant? Anyhow, that’s my bent.

Erin Avatar

Haul: Nothing this week. Rediscoveries: SR Tidal. It’s not really but I haven’t used it in a while. I just love the poop out of it.

Weekend: Husband is leaving for a trip for work, so we have to get him ready.

Decor Style: It’s hard to pin down for me because I really love just about everything. I’d say its eclectic transitional? Honestly a bit of everything. Amber Interiors, McGee and Co and a few others are fairly similar. I just like a little more of world flair then they tend to put in in accessories.

Mariella Avatar

Haul: some great finds at Marshall’s – an Aquis hair turban (one use and I could see a difference), Redken Extreme Anti-Snap leave in conditioner and Aura Cacia Pillow Potion essential oil blend

Weekend plans: gym tomorrow and then my friend is coming to town; we’ll go to the fabric street in my city and then my husband and I are taking her out for dinner to celebrate her birthday. I’m making her cherry clafoutis for her birthday dessert as it is something she’s always wanted to try.

Decorating style: a combo of “comfy/welcoming” and “timeless”; I want people to be able to relax in my home and truly feel “at home”. Living in Canada, with 2 distinct (and 2 almost unnoticeable) seasons, I do like to change things like pillows, throws, etc. to make rooms airier and cooler in summer and warmer/cozier in winter.

Seraphine Avatar

Haul: My makeup no-buy is going unusually well.

Rediscoveries: MAC Omega Eyeshadow. I’ve had this for ages, but I’ve just recently fallen in love with it for a one-shade daytime look, using it in the crease and blended to look like a “natural” shadow.

Weekend Plans: Continuing to care for our recovering dog, visiting a friend in the hospital, volunteering, and using all the remaining time to do some serious couch potato-ing.

Genevieve Avatar

That’s not a mess Christine! Mellon looks so adorable in your makeup room.

Haul: Nada this week.
Rediscoveries: I dragged out my Naked 1 palette this week and realised, once again, how lovely and versatile it is for a simple day look.

Weekend Plans
It has been quite hectic in our household recently, with lots happening.
Friday – we had Lachlan as his mother and aunty were creating his firefighter birthday cake and all the other food. My job was to make the sausage rolls and the fairy bread.
Saturday – Lachlan’s birthday party with his friends at a local park with a bike path on it for younger riders. He got a little PJ Masks bike for his actual birthday last week and the theme of the party is Emergency Services, seeing he is such a firefighter fan.
Sunday – a drive out into the countryside and lunch at a hotel.
The weather has cooled down considerable in the past couple of days, and I am hoping for everyone else in the northern hemisphere that your weather is becoming a bit warmer.

Decorating style – modern, with a neutral palette.

Genevieve Avatar

Thank you Rachel! And of course today, Sunday in Aus. it is nice and sunny – not too hot.
The day went really well after all. We already had the Brio and Duplo train set out because of Lachlan’s visit on Friday, so all the little boys had a great time. There was about 25 people in total, including some grandparents. And the kids were all really good. Needless to say, I am a tad tired today.

AB Avatar

Mellan is looking inquisitive, along lines ‘are you still at this’. lol

Haul/rediscoveries: MAC Velvet Teddy single eyeshadow — impulse buy; it’s ok, a little dusty, but color is good for me so I’ll keep. Olay Regenerist serum — on a serum project at the moment.

Weekend: a friend visiting from out of town tomorrow, so lunch or something; Sunday, pilates.

Decorating style: Not sure there’s a category, I’ve just bought what I’ve liked over the years and it’s turned into ‘me’. Traditional-ish but with clean lines, and antique-y, mid-century or modern. Whites and off whites on all walls, curtains, soft goods; basic furniture pieces (like Mitchell Gold) as base with reds, blues in Persian-like rugs and art; lots of art I’ve collected over time and travels; copper in the kitchen; I like wood furniture and especially cherry. A friend from Germany said my house was European feeling though I don’t know what means really.

Denise S. Avatar

Mellon is super cute! And your vanity doesn’t look messy to me.

Haul: Jouer blush palette and Viseart Coy and Cool mattes palettes! Can’t wait to use my Viseart palettes. I now own all of the 12 pan palettes and love them so much!

Weekend Plans: Yesterday I didn’t sleep well and woke up with a headache. Today I woke up with a throbbing migraine. I feel better after taking Excedrine and using a cold compress on my neck and head.Hope you feel better too Christine! I’m going to chill this weekend around the house. Made plans but I’m going to cancel them and relax.

Whats your decorating style?: A interior decorator said my house was decorated like the Pottery Barn. Comfortable and warm is what I’d call it.

Denise S. Avatar

Christine how are you liking Tom Ford’s Lost Cherry perfume? I was thinking about pre-ordering it from Neiman Marcus using the $50 off and they are giving a gift bag with beauty items too! I loved how it smelled on me when I tested it but it seemed to wear off rather quickly.

Rachel R. Avatar

I love to look at Mellan. Your vanity still looks way better than mine! lol

????: Bite Amuse Bouche Liquified Lipstick in Demi Glace; NARS Mosaic Glow Blush in Fireclay; Chanel Les 9 Ombres Multi-Effects Eyeshadow Palette in Quintessence; Anastasia Beverly Hills Lipgloss in Purple Rain.

??????? ?????: At 2:30 p.m., my son sprung on me that his workplace internship is having an 80s-themed party tonight at 6 p.m. for employees and interns, so I’ll be scrambling and attending that. Otherwise, it’s supposed to snow, so we’ll probably do housework and put away the last of the Christmas ornaments.

????’? ???? ?????????? ??????: Left to my own devices, gothic/fantasy/whimsical, but unfortunately my husband’s tastes don’t completely mesh. So eclectic, I guess: Our living room has deep red walls, and we have stuff from India, the Orient, and other lands paired with dark woods, browns, and black. Our master bedroom is teal with a brown/tan willow motif and leopard print accents (sounds weird, but works). Our main bath is science lab themed. My makeup room is Alice in Wonderland themed with pale blue walls and bright accents. My son has a Dr. Who/Dalek theme with bright yellow walls and cobalt accents. We’re all over the place. We’re working on the kitchen…something whimsical and nerdy with shelves holding my Funko pop figures, unicorns, and other things. I’ll hang my Willy Wonka poster and get some cute accessories.

CeeBee Avatar

Mellan is so cute! (great rug too, BTW ;-))

Haul: Got my first SG order (3 blush, 3 highlighters and a dozen e/s) and then promptly ordered more three days later, a bunch of different flavoured Korean sheet masks and a Mario Badescu lavender facial spray. Still waiting on my Colourpop BFF mascara, It’s My Pleasure palette and several of the Blur Lux lipsticks but fingers crossed for Monday.

Weekend plans: My husband has been away on a fishing trip since Weds, so my friend Jen is coming over for Indian and ice cream sundaes and we’re going to put on face masks and paint our nails and have a pajama party and drink gin cocktails. And I guess maybe I’ll kiss my husband when he gets home on Sunday night…

Decorating style: Uhhhh, practical and not butt ugly? I don’t think that’s an actual style though. I’d say a little bit vintage chic? All my furniture was chosen for functionality and comfort rather then style or appearance (like, it’s still a factor but not the deciding one) but I have some very old battered Salter scales that I use as a fruit bowl (still accurate!) and quite a bit of inherited mis-matched Burleigh china pieces that are useful and not just purely decorative. I have some antique Calico and Blue Ardern saucer bowl type things (not the teacup ones) that are probably worth quite a bit of money but I use them as a soap dishes in the kitchen and laundry. My aunt made some horrified screeching noises when she saw them (and that’s how I found out I have super expensive soap dishes)…

ShariP Avatar

Oh, Mellan, you are such a cutie. ? Christine, I hope you can get some sleep. I really feel for people who can’t. My husband doesn’t sleep well and he gets so aggravated with me because if I sit still for five minutes I’m sound asleep. I also emphasize with your migraines. The women in my family all suffer with them. I have an average of two a week. I just started a new injection, Ajovy, in hopes of reducing them.

Haul: Just a Makeup Revolution eyeshadow palette from TJ Maxx for $4. I’m really surprised at how nice the quality is. Otherwise, I’ve been trying to rotate through my stash and revisit some of my less used favorites.

Weekend plans: Visit my mom in the nursing home and then work my 2nd job.

Decorating style: Mission and muted greens, blues, and beige.

Brenda C Avatar

I get massive migraines all the time. It does not help that I live In Calgary and we get Chinooks quite often. When my migraine meds don’t work I take codiene and I afterwords I cannot sleep. My doctor is a pain specialist and he told me to take Kava Kava to help me sleep. I buy it off him but I’m sure you would be able to purchase it from a Health Food Store. If it seems stubborn he told me I could take two of the gel caps. I have taken two and I haven’t had any side effects except a good night’s sleep. Now if I could just avoid the migraines totally that would be a dream.

ShariP Avatar

Brenda, I’m in the northern United States and our weather changes rapidly and frequently. My neurologist said it’s contributing to my migraines. He suggested moving to a more stable atmosphere. I looked it up online and there is a lot of discussion about it so I looked up the most stable and told my hubby were moving….to Dubai….he didnt buy it, lol….but they do have the most stable atmosphere.

Korinne Avatar

Haul/Rediscoveries: I saw Super Nineties from CT and had to have it. I also bought the Pillow Talk quad which has been …. interesting.

Weekend plans: My uncle is in the hospital, so my plan is to do as much as I can near my house/car in case I have to get up and go.

What’s your decorating style??: Color meets French pattern blocks! Colors you wouldn’t picture together with prints.

Nikki Avatar

Christine, your vanity looks great, escpecially that coffee and that cool-toned Wet ‘n Wild palette with the purple shades!
Good luck with your sleep from a fellow insomniac. The best sleep tip I ever got was from the February 2018 O magazine. There was a whole 4-page article on the importance of sleep, but what stuck with me was that even waking rest helps, so you shouldn’t beat yourself up when you can’t fall asleep.
Haul/Rediscoveries: I bought the BH Cosmetics Zodiac palette from Kohl’s last week (not sure if I mentioned it then). My most recent makeup book order-Melanie Mills’ Glitter & Glam, bought from Amazon-just got here today. There are still 5 makeup books I’m thinking of getting from Barnes & Noble Marketplace, and then I think I’ll be done.
Weekend plans: I worked all day today, Sunday. Tomorrow I need to get another Zodiac palette for my aunt’s birthday-will probably eat out then, and TV once we get home.
What’s your decorating style??: Highly eclectic. Bright colors, animal prints, and a bunch of pop culture memorabilia.

Mellan is such a darling! If you think your vanity is messy, you should (not) see mine. 🙂

Haul, I’m on a low buy, but for some reason I couldn’t resist two Chinese New Year lipsticks, one from Guerlaine the other from Givenchy. They are both warmish reds, comfortable to wear, have a shiny finish and I’ve worn them both ever since I got them, not at the same time. on alternate days. Now I have to resist all temptations for the rest of the month.

Weekend plans, sorting out the aforementioned vanity, cleaning the house, with two dogs and wet ground outside it’s not dusty, it’s sandy, Yuck!

Decorating style, hm, not sure I have a style at all. It’s a mixture of antiques, IKEA, 1930s and 40s some classic, clean lines and loads of books on shelves. I like art noveau and art deco and I also have a lot of plants.
