MAC Stylish Brow: Fluidline Brow Gelcreme

MAC Fluidline Brow Gelcreme ($15.00 for 0.10 fl. oz.) is a new, limited edition brow gel that’s supposed to be long-wearing, waterproof, and sets quickly. It comes in three shades: Dirty Blonde (soft taupe brown), Redhead (muted golden brown), and Deep Dark Brunette (rich brunette).

  • Dirty Blonde is an ochre-toned brown with a gray cast; it’s a bit yellow-brown to be a true taupe, but there’s a definite grayness to it that give sit a taupe-like coloring.
  • Redhead is a warm, yellowed, medium tan-brown.
  • Deep Dark Brunette is a dark brown with subtle, warm red undertones.

Ooh–I really like these.  They have the same consistency and feel of MAC’s Fluidlines, which is a fantastic formula.  It’s creamy, pigmented, smooth, and it sets efficiently–not so quick that you have no time to fix mistakes, blend, or the like, but not so long that it has time to move around.  I used Deep Dark Brunette to fill in my brow using the 208 (which is the brush promoted with this launch), and it was lovely.  The creamy consistency allowed for a really crisp line and edge along the upper and lower edges of the brow.  The color wasn’t too harsh against my skin tone and with my brow color, so on dark brown (with a bit of black) brows, it’s an appropriate color.

All three shades had incredible pigmentation; the color payoff in a single pass was opaque and didn’t skip or drag.  When I tested the shade closest to my brow color, it lasted all day long.  I had no problem getting a full eight hours of wear, and even after twelve hours, 90% of it remained.  Mere water did not smudge or cause it to run, either, so it holds up to the waterproof claim as well.  I will be curious to see how suitable Dirty Blonde and Redhead are for those with lighter brows.  I wish this formula was permanent, and I could see a few more shades being added to round it out more.

These look lovely, but I just don’t understand why anyone would release limited edition brow products.. At least for me, they’re the kind of products where, when I find something that works for me, I stick with it for a long time…

Shanna Avatar

Darn! I love the concept, but I really wish the brunette color was an ash brown rather than one with red undertones 🙁 Crossing my fingers that these do well, become permanent, and MAC expands the color range.

radiofireworks Avatar

Good lord, MAC putting out quality product shocker!

Sadly it looks like Redhead is utterly unsuitable for my colouring – I have naturally dark auburn hair and it looks way, way too yellow-toned, but it may work better on people with paler hair than me!

Lily Miramontes Avatar

Im really thankful that you demonstrated the product . It really makes the eyebrow look defined . Im excited for this collection can’t wait to see the brow pencils. !

Veronica Avatar

Whoa, a naked eyelid! We don’t get to see those very often from you. 😀

I really like this, and I’m thinking the dark brown would be perfect for my brows…but the LE status makes me hesitant to buy these. I mean, WHY would you want this product to be LE? It’s such a basic staple! I’d rather spend my money trying out Anastasia’s brow gel line because then I’d least know it’d still be there if I liked it. 😐

Phoebe Avatar

I was so excited about this product until I saw the colors. Bummer. As usual, there’s not a color that’s more on the charcoal grey side for us ladies who have naturally almost-black brows.

xamyx Avatar

I agree; while my brows are actually dark brown (I have naturally dark auburn hair), I dye my hair black, so although the darkest shade offered would work well with my natural haircolor & brows, it would look strange with my hair. It seriously peeves me when I see people whose brows are a completely different color than their hair, especially if the brows are lighter.

shelly Avatar

I use Brun eyeshadow to fill my brows in, as I also have very dark brown/almost black brows naturally. It seems to me DDB is too warm. I’d want something more ashy, too.

Nicoco Chanel Avatar

Ooh, dirty blonde looks lovely! Like ud’s buck, but gel. I prefer a lighter colour for filling in my brows, so I will definitely check these out.

Ryou Avatar

I really like the idea, but I doubt it would play well with my already full brows. Did your brows feel stiff or crunchy with the gelcremes on?

I also wonder how user-friendly these are; since they’re so pigmented, they might be prone to cause overdrawn brow accidents.

Barbara Avatar

I was side-eyeing the blonde shade because it looked so warm in the pot, but your swatch totally proved me wrong. This seems like a great product for people who want a strong brow.

Christine Avatar

I don’t think I’ve swatched Dip Down before or at least not in a really long time as I didn’t even have it in my stash… I did manage to find a new one that was in my to-be-reviewed bin so I used that just now, and Dip Down is a bit darker–it is a bit richer, too. MAC didn’t list these as eyeliner, so I don’t know if they’re safe for the lash line.

Liv Avatar

Oh thanks for looking into that! Good to know! I need to get my hands on these then. Would you say brunette was more neutral in color than dipdown which seems to be have a reddish tone?

kate Avatar

The blonde one looks like it would be a good match for me, so I might have to try this out. I’ve always been a fan of the fluidline formula. Part of me is wondering if these could dupe as soft brown liners…

Avi Avatar

Love the idea of these but am afraid the lightest shade would be too warm-toned for my brows, though the swatch looks more promising…may have to give ’em a try

Mia Avatar

Yaaaassss! I can’t wait to get my hands on these. I’ve been looking for a new brow product that stays. I wanted to try the MUFE brow product but I just hadn’t seen enough reviews on it yet.

helen Avatar

I’ve been using the MUFE eyebrow corrector for years now and LoVe it! I agree that there aren’t enough reviews on the product and not sure why.
It’s in tube form and VERY little goes a long way! I urge you to try the MUFE eyebrow corrector (aka: fall in love with it) since the MAC product is LE. LE??? MAC, why oh why??

Wenz Avatar

I second this! MUFE aqua brow doesnt get enough love but its AMAZING!!!!An excellent product!!! You can get a sample of MUFE from Sephora & maybe compare them (esp. since this is LE)

Hazel Avatar

Ohhh I might need this stuff. As a redhead struggling with graying eyebrows, I’m constantly fighting to find a color that doesn’t give me Groucho Marx eyebrows or look far too red. I think I’ll be trying Dirty Blonde.

Oh, and eyebrown dying does not work very well on me. My heavy thick eyebrown hairs don’t suck up the dye very well or for very long…

LuxLosAngeles Avatar

Oh MY, these are so appealing!!! I wonder if they’ll come out with more colors? I have the most khaki colored brows which match, in my lengthy searching, most closely- Mac’s “Lingering” pencil.

tyanna Avatar

i would SO buy this, but i already have my MUFE Aqua Brow.. which is very similar to this in many ways. Plus, this is limited edition… so if i fall in love with it, i’ll never be able to repurchase it!! Guess I’ll stick with my MUFE!!

tyanna Avatar

and i feel like they need a shade in between redhead and deep dark brunette!! I have dark brown hair, but I like you use a color that’s a little lighter than my hair! We need a “medium brunette” shade.

Lisa J Avatar

Have you tried the Tarte brow mousse in Taupe? I have dark brown brows as well, but the hairs are quite sparse and matching the hair color tends to make them look like I drew them on with a dark brown sharpie! Not cute. I like to use lighter shades for a softer look, too. The Tarte one is a very neutral brown, not too warm and not too gray, and is the perfect shade for me IMO. I just posted about this particular product for another comment, too…didn’t realize how much I love it!

It’s worth a try if you haven’t already. 🙂

xamyx Avatar

I don’t get why MAC would release such basic products, then either label them LE, or discontinue them (even if they’re popular), and then waste so much effort on subpar LE collections, or adding to the list of 97 bright pink & purple lipstick that all end up looking the same when applied.

Granted, this shade selection won’t work for me (at the present time), but I’d rather they focus on expanding the range, instead of putting out subpar eyeshadow quads, with shades that can be duplicated in the permanant lineup, at better quality.

Lark Avatar

Just call MAC and ask. I do that. You can also email a MUA, they have more time to check on things them. They tracked down Rodartes gold lip recipe from the runway a few years ago. Wanted it for a party. They’re very nice!

Kelly Avatar

These look interesting! I lost my eyebrows in a car accident so therefore “draw” them on everyday. Do you think this product will last and work on bare skin?

beth Avatar

Dirty blonde is my colour woop woop 😀 I cant do my eyebrows very well though they just dont grow!! theyre all wrong and when i fill them in they look too harsh :/

Amy Avatar

I wish they’d come out with a grey color. I have black hair and I find grey looks most natural on me, anything with a hint of warmth jumps out against my fair skin like crazy.

TrippyPixie Avatar

This looks really interesting, but I dislike how it’s limited edition. (Also, since MAC reversed their stance on animal testing, I haven’t been buying from them.)

Since Tarte’s Amazonian Clay Waterproof Brow Mousse seems to be a similar product, I think I’ll be picking that up instead. However, that product seems to have an even more limited shade range, which is disappointing.

Lisa J Avatar

I was just going to recommend the Tarte one, too! I actually really love it, though the color range is limited, like you said. Ironically, it’s a color range that includes a neutral toned brown…a TRULY neutral toned brown called Taupe which is a shade that’s hard to find in my experience. Most “taupe” brow colors tend to be either too warm or too gray on me. I keep trying different products and I’m tempted by these, but I always end up going back to the Tarte one. I think I’ll save some money and pass this time. 🙂

Miss J Avatar

Thank you for the info on Tarte’s Taupe shade! I was looking at it online just last night. It sounds like it’d be perfect for me from your description, so I will have to check it out over this one.

holly Avatar

im a brow fanatic and used the mufe eyebrow corrector for about six months straight. i really liked it-two tiny dots were enough to fill in my brows, it took about 30 seconds to dry so it left plenty of time to evenly apply and fix any mistakes. they look pretty natural when used with a light hand but of course can also give you more dramatic brows if desired. they survived both dry desert heat and summer heat as well as sweating in the gym haha-between 8-10 hours! the only downside is the limited color range! i stopped using it once i ran out of the tube (which lasted six months with daily use and theres still about 1/4 left!) but thats only because i was given an anastatio brow duo and i like powder a bit better. hth!

abigailOD Avatar

Oooh…I’m so curious!

Christine, have you tried their Brow Gel (in a tube like a lipgloss)? Is this better in terms of application and texture?

Caryn Avatar

I hope they will still be available next month. I try to put a monthly cap on my makeup budget and this month I spent more than I want to because of my hunt for Pink Pigeon (which ended up with me getting more backups than I need). It won’t put me under or anything, but I just want to stay disciplined with money and prevent a looming makeup addiction. lol.

susan castillo Avatar

I tried all 3 shades of the MUFE ones available at sephora and the lighter ones turned a funny shade of orange on me, the dark was too warm. I stopped at my Mac store and the MUA used the deep dark brunette along with the the brunette powder duo and my brows (I have next to none) looked amazing !!! I ordered two of the gel cremes since they’re LE

Lena Avatar

These are the first MAC items I’ve desired since the Korean Candy Slimshine was released! Pretty revolutionary formula, and Deep Dark Brunette looks right up my street (warm toned!)

Sara B Avatar

Will these look natural on brows that are not already as full as yours, Christine? Of course having the right color makes a huge difference, but as far as texture, I’m wondering if these will look odd on sparser brows.

Stevia Avatar

About a month ago, my Mac girl told me about these. She said they will be limited edition but later will be included in the permanent range. Not sure when exactly, though!

Ellie Avatar

Seriously Mac, why do these have to be limited edition?! Might not buy it just for that reason alone. If their perfect and then I can’t re purchase I know I’ll be doomed to forever search for a dupe and I’d hate that.. x

cel Avatar

These look amazing!
The concept reminds me of the MuFE brow err I can’t really remember what they’re called.

Wish they were permanent too, everyone needs this.

Marilyn @ Lipgloss and Spandex Avatar

WHY do these have to be limited edition!? I love having my brows look neat with crisp sharp lines, and usually use MAC Brun eyeshadow and a stiff flat eyeliner brush to get the effect. I LOVE Fluidlines and am excited that MAC’s Brow Gelcremes worked so well for you. I would like MAC to make these permanent–they seem so much more useful than those ridiculous “pressed pigments” that are being repromoted.

Dinitchka Avatar

I really like brow gels and creams to come in pots. My past favs were Arbonne (in a pan) and Laura Mercier (pot). Now I just use an eyeliner pencil and eyeshadow to set. I am always on the hunt for brow products since I have to create and fill in my brows.

These are a total DISAPPOINTMENT! I really really wanted to try these but I am not going to spend $ on an LE item that should be in the regular line.

MAC you FAILED on the availability side of the product!

Lark Avatar

Aggravated! My eyebrows have great shape and density; But they’re 40% snow white and worsening. I haven’t found anybody I trust to dye them. This could have been great if they’d included an ashy brunette! Browset are all too warm, the new pencils are too. Besides, many of us look like Mommy with wire coat hangers in penciled brows.

I’ve been reduced to using an old tube of mascara in soft black, I need the brush barely loaded. It’s not just MAC. But MAC is awful about acknowledging we white haired blues exist. Or any not yellow toned people, or older people.

Renee Avatar

These look great however I don’t think the deep dark will work we’ll with my brunette hair. I find that using eyebrow enhancesers with red or warm undertones make my eyebrows look fake or painted-on. I think enhancers with more neutral, slightly grey undertones work best- my favorite is the Tarte Amazionian Clay Brow Mousse . It is AMAZING!

Linn Avatar

I’d love to see some more cool toned shades – these are way too red for me! Thanks for the great pictures and detailed reviews as always, Christine! I was wondering; do you think that layering a powder on top of either this or the Veluxe pencil would work?

J.Q. Avatar

These brow gelcremes look really promising, do you think that deep dark brunette would still work for naturally black brows or would it be too light? Also, do you know of a similar product that comes in more neutral/ashy colors for naturally really dark brows?

Neta Avatar

I’m using Quite Natural paint pot to define the lower part of my brows as part of my brow routine along with Beguile brow set and a concealer, and I love it! it lasts all day as well, it’s really pretty on, and it’s a tad lighter than my natural brow color, but not in an obvious way, so it kinda makes them look skinnier and neater (my brows are pretty thick) so I don’t really feel the need to replace it with those gelcremes. I think they’re just following an existing trend that already exists of using creamy products to shape the brows, when there’s no real need for a specific product for the brows as there are other products that work in a multipurpose way.

Jade Avatar

None of these shades look like something I’d use on my brows, which is a shame! If these came in a shade more like copperplate eyeshadow I’d consider it. Can I ask, Christine, do you find yourself using this now instead of MAC espresso?

Christine Avatar

I’ve used it on and off – I wouldn’t say I’ve converted yet. Since it’s a gel, you do have to remember to wash the brush every day, and I’m sooo used to not needing to wash my brow brush every day (since I only use it for the same powder shade, I would only wash it every 2-3 uses).

Anne Avatar

I wonder how these compare to Laura Mercier brow definer, that comes in a pot and also has a gel formula. Anyway, since these are LE, I might not try them -I’ve had my LM for over a year and I haven’t reached half the pot yet.

YH Avatar

Went to the MAC store and they don’t have it yet. Do you know if they changed the date? Will is also be available at MACYS and NORDSTROM?

Stacey Avatar

When I saw this review I was so disappointed in the color of the redhead brow gelcreme. It looked all wrong for me. But I had already ordered it. I was planning on sending it right back as soon as I got it.
It came today, It looks very different from the swatches and product pics.
I read your blog daily and I know that any discrepancy is not due to your superb pics or my computer monitor.
Strange huh?
Im happy the product turned out being perfect for me!
I refer to you or Dustin Hunter before any cosmetics purchase. Thanks for all the great info and wisdom.

Mareeyah Avatar

What is the difference between this and the regular fluidline? This product is currently sold out at the MAC stores/counters near me so if this is basically the same product as Dipdown, should I even bother looking for the brow version?

Shelly Avatar

I have tattoed brows that have turned grey and too cool for my hair and skin. This is the best brow product I have found to lighten and warm this unflattering color. The Red completely covers my tattoo and stays all day. This has saved me!

abigailod Avatar

Christine, for someone who doesn’t *really fill her eyebrows per se (though I only use the Brow Set – which gets tricky!), is this easy to learn and maneuver? Or do you think I should practice with powder first? I am not very brave with anything eye make-up… =/

If you say I should go for it, I shall start a hunt! It’s sold out online. =(
