Sunset Hair 2.0 | The Refresh
I had my sunset hair touched up yesterday, which wasn’t wholly necessary, but my family is visiting later this month (and I usually see my family two to three times a year), so I wanted my mom to see the sunset effect in its full glory. We did make some adjustments, though based on how it “faded” (more like transformed) over the last six weeks. At this point, these posts are mostly my written record for myself in my hair “journey” more than anything else, so I hope you’ll indulge me with another post about it. (If not, it’s an extra post anyway, so you’ll be getting your normal daily dose of posts!)
The first time I did the effect, I was a little nervous about the rose gold/copper/orange tones, so they were the least present and were done more in the back, instead of being more prominent in the front and around the pieces that would frame my face. I found that I liked a lot of the purple streaks along with the peek-a-boo effect of the lighter, orange/copper pieces, and they were getting harder to “find” after four washes, as the stronger pink/magenta dyes washed through and tinted the lighter orange pieces.
After seven washes, there was still nuance from those pieces, but they were darker, more red-copper. Thankfully, I still loved and enjoyed the overall effect and look of the more pink/purple in my hair, and I also found that the color seemed to get more vibrant as the rose gold/copper tones muted from the pink. Since I was going in for a touch up, I passed along that feedback, and I had also decided that I wanted to do more orange and more purple with less pink overall–I told my stylist 20% orange, 30% purple, and 50% pink. She modified the process a bit by going for a stronger orange mix of dyes, and she rinsed each piece from foil individually so that on the first rinse, more of the orange-heavy pieces wouldn’t get the pinker/purpler dyes running through it.
The retouching process took just under four hours from start to finish with about an hour being the rinsing, drying, and styling. It took about two and a half hours to separate and paint all of the sections of my hair (which then went into foils). When I originally did it, the process took seven hours but included raising my balayage up as well. The next time I go in, I expect to raise my balayage again, but I think when I do that is really dependent on when my hair grows out too long that it feels heavy enough that I need a trim (it’s getting there).
I still really love how my hair looks, from the first coloring to how it’s held up and looked over time to the retouched look. Never say never since who knows what might catch my eye, but the plan is to keep the sunset effect until closer to summer. In Arizona, they don’t typically bury the water pipes very deep, and it’s impossible to get cold water in my home during the summer months, which is less than ideal for keeping in brighter hair dyes, so I might use that time to make more drastic changes (I was originally considering going a little lighter, more rose gold/dusty pink for spring!). I feel like this type of shades suit me; they’re brighter but not all the time, as it really depends on the light and angle, so I can play it up or down in a way. It’s also good since I tend to go heavy on eye makeup that I don’t need my hair to be competing 24/7 for attention with my eyes!

Definitely worth the time and effort you have put in. Your hair looks wonderful. and I love coming along on your journey.
I have just one color (short hair + many colors = clown) but I also need gray roots touched up so it is four hours in the chair for me but now I really enjoy my hair.
Thank you! I find I wear mine down a little more often with the multi-colors in it, which is a nice change of pace.
Glad you have found a way to enjoy your hair, Lesley! 🙂
I don’t mind these posts, actually I like them a lot! Your dye job is so gorgeous, I love seeing how you’re evolving it.
Thank you, Kat!
I’m not sure *why*, but I love the current 2.0 version best! Nothing I can readily explain, either? Possibly because I just love purple and orange tones over pink? Who knows! But it looks gorgeous, and that’s all that matters.
Also, about our insane water pipe situation here; I don’t get what they were thinking by keeping the pipes so close to the surface with some of it even above ground. I’ve been scalded by COLD water! Yep, there have been times when what came out upon my turning the cold water handle on, I received water hotter than my hot water handle! And hot water wreaks havoc on bright hair coloring, unfortunately.
Thank you, Nancy! 🙂
Oh, there’s no cold at all in most of my house during the summer – I just turn the water on, don’t even get beyond the cold section of the handle, for hot water, lol!
I love. Your hair!! I am also living the up solid-state are you wearing?
Hey Vetter! I’m not sure if maybe auto correct got you there – I can’t figure out what you’re asking!
Omg….yes that darn auto correct! What lip products are you wearing?

I like seeing these posts so definitely keep them coming as long as you’re having fun experimenting with your hair.
I think the 1.0 after four weeks is my favorite version. I dyed my hair red (or burgundy red) for so, sooo many years and hated the constant fight against it going orange on my hair. When it was fresh and purpley red or blazing red red was my favorite time and man I’d go sooo long without washing my hair to keep it. Granted the copper your hair turned is a lot more flattering than the burnt orange was against my skin.
Mine wasn’t turning copper but losing all the orange/copper, so we put more in this round! My hope is that it’ll be a more gradual change to more pink/purple. I’m sure if I waited longer I might start seeing some brassy tones coming through since my lightened hair is more like strawberry blonde, LOL. I was very worried about how orange would look against my skin, and my colorist is great as she listens well, haha.
Love your hair! Also, what lip color?
For which picture? There are four different lip colors in this post, I think!
Absolutely beautiful Christine.
Thank you, Brenda!
Beautiful! It looks so lovely. What color of lipstick are wearing?
Thanks, Amy! In which photo?
Hi Christine, which lip products are you wearing in this post? I really love the color!
For pictures 2/8 and 3/8, to clarify!
Sunset 2.0 lip is Bite Beauty Gold gloss over Estee Lauder Tiger Eye Pure Color Sculpting Lipstick, second 2.0 lip is Bite Beauty Smoked Za’atar + Gingersnap with Gold gloss on top.
Thank you so much for the reply! I should use the Gold gloss more – it’s so pigmented that I think I often get scared to use it, but your lip combos look totally wearable!
Love it! My 16 year old granddaughter is 6 ft tall and has this color on short hair. I can’t wait to forward your post to her. Mine is blonde at 72. I’m Swedish descent and I have had my color matched to my natural blonde for 23 years. I’m waiting for it to go white (which my stylist says it already has around my face). Yours is the first post I subscribed to and it’s awesome!
Awesome to hear that you were able to get the blonde you had before matched!
Thank you!
Nice mix of cool and warm tones. I could stare at it all day. Lovely!
Thank you, Pamela!
Still stunning.❤
Thanks, Susan!
Gorgeous hair!
Thanks, Wednesday 😉
i enjoy your hair post and updates. i think v2 looks even better than v1!
Thank you, Joy!
You look great, & love your hair. I have a wig this color, that I wear from time to time. I get a lot of compliments on it, lol.
Wigs are nice for changing things up easily!
I love your hair color and these posts, so please continue to share. thanks!
Thank you! 😀
Your hair looks beautiful and if you feel comfortable, let us know how your family likes it! :o)
Thank you, Sandy! So far, everyone seems to like it, but I don’t know if any of my family members would actually express disgust, LOL.
I don’t comment very often, but your hair color is GORGEOUS! It boggles my mind with how a hair stylist can achieve a result like this by mixing different colors. Now that’s what I would call a “master” hair colorist! How do you keep your hair looking so shiny? BTW, you come with the most beautiful lip color combos, which is why you probably get so many questions. Have a blessed day1
She takes very small sections, then uses the handle of a thin comb to weave and pull pieces out, so there’s a lot of alternation and how it’s brushed on and hand blended at times to mesh two colors together!
I don’t really do much styling to do it – little heat tools – and I think that’s a major reason why as I don’t really do anything but wash it, lol! I try to use Olaplex once every two to three weeks (basically, when I have the patience + remember!).
Your hair is AMAZING! Love it – at any stage. It looks great on you.
Thank you, Marg!
Really love these colours on you and the sunset effect also seems to fade really well – meaning it didn’t look dull or much lighter after 4 weeks.
Also, your hair looks so healthy and shiny!
Thank you! I swear it got brighter over time – maybe just the pink coming through more? I don’t know. There are some parts right now that almost shimmer yellow/green at times from the pearl in the dyes and I expect as the pearl washes away, it might be more vibrant.
