MAC Blue Gaze Nail Lacquer Review, Photos, Swatches
MAC Blue Gaze Nail Lacquer
Is It Blue or Is It Purple?
MAC Blue Gaze Nail Lacquer ($16.00 for 0.34 fl. oz.) is described as a “dark periwinkle.” It’s a bluish purple with a cream finish. At a glance, it’s indigo, and when you look more closely, there’s a definite, strong blueness to the color. SpaRitual blue Moon is a touch purpler and has shimmer. MAC Breezy Blue is similar. Deborah Lippmann I Know What Boys Like is bluer.
It’s one of two shades from MAC Taste Temptation. The other shade is still listed as “coming soon!” online, so I was not able to purchase it yet. Â Blue Gaze was so easy to work with; I didn’t experience any streaking (which is something I experience more often than average with MAC’s formula), and the pigmentation was incredible. Â It was mostly opaque after one coat, but I did use two for the swatches. Â The consistency wasn’t too thick or too thin, so it flowed evenly across the nail and never pooled along the edges of the nail. Â I typically get a week of wear out of MAC’s nail lacquer formula with minor tip wear but no chipping.
P.S. — At a glance, would you call it blue… or purple? If you had to pick one?

At a glance, would you call it blue… or purple? If you had to pick one?
It looks more purple in the bottle shot, then much more blue on your nails. So, it’d depend on where I saw it!
Blues aren’t my favourite in cosmetics, but I quite like this one! Well done, MAC, I’m not being snarky about a new release!
It’s funny because I thought it looks bluer on the bottle than on the nails !
When I first glanced at it I thought it was blue. But then I kept staring at it and it turned purple. It’s like a weird optical illusion.
Looks like blue to me. It is purplish, but it definitely leans more blue, at least to my eyes and computer
Pretty
I would say blue for sure. I can see that it leans purple but not so much that it becomes one of those ambiguous shades.
I think it’s more blue than purple, but there’s definitely purple in there. I like it, whatever the color!
On this screen, there’s no question. Blue and blue only.
I see total and absolute blue, on both my phone and laptop screens. Not a hint or whisper of purple anywhere, esp. in the photos of it on the nails.
blue
It really is both blue and purple! Blurple?
I <3 blurples! OPI Roadhouse Blues is my favorite one that I own, but I've always wanted their Sapphires in the Snow as it'd be my HG blurple polish. I only own 2 pink polishes, but I probably own 50 different shades/finishes of blues lol.
At a glance, I’d call it blue. Even after staring at the photos for a bit, I’d still call it blue. The bottle to me just looks straight blue. On the nails, I suppose I can see where purple comes in to play, but it’s still too predominantly blue to call it blurple, IMO.
It’s the color of a blacklight, whatever that may be… I like it though.
I was so perplexed when I read the description. I have a MacBook, and only see 100% blue….no purple. Weird!
As someone who has a tendency to buy ALL THE PURPLE POLISH EVER, this seems undoubtably blue to me. I just booted it up on my ipod to double check that it wasn’t simply my laptop monitor and…I think that calling this shade a periwinkle is pushing it. It’s a deep, dusty blue in my opinion.
(As a side note, I also like blue polish quite a bit–I just tend to go nuts buying everything purple, and it’s not tweaking my purple-ometer.)
Purple? To me that polish is almost as blue as it gets.
It looks very blue to me!
Blue!
I looks straight up blue in the bottle. I see a hint of purple on the nail, but overall I’d still say it’s about 95% blue on my screen.
Definitely blue.
I see all blue- doesn’t really look purple to me at all.
While it definitely has some purple to it, it looks more blue to me, like a toned-down version of RBL IKB:2012. Super pretty and glad to hear it applied well! I love the RBL, but it’s a bit thick and takes patience to apply smoothly.
Blue, definitely — no way is this a “dark periwinkle”! (Which is a shame, really; a dark periwinkle would have been just gorgeous! :P)
